Commercial lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries suffer from low energy density and do not meet the growing demands of the energy storage market. Therefore, building next-generation rechargeable Li and Li-ion batteries with higher energy densities, better safety characteristics, lower cost and longer cycle life is of outmost importance. To achieve smaller and lighter next-generation rechargeable Li and Li-ion batteries that can outperform commercial Li-ion batteries, several new energy storage chemistries are being extensively studied. In this review, we summarize the current trends and provide guidelines towards achieving this goal, by addressing batteries using high-voltage cathodes, metal fluoride electrodes, chalcogen electrodes, Li metal anodes, high-capacity anodes as well as useful electrolyte solutions. We discuss the choice of active materials, practically achievable energy densities and challenges faced by the respective battery systems. Furthermore, strategies to overcome remaining challenges for achieving energy characteristics are addressed in the hope of providing a useful and balanced assessment of current status and perspectives of rechargeable Li and Li-ion batteries.

Guidelines and trends for next-generation rechargeable lithium and lithium-ion batteries.

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have emerged as high-priority materials for safe, energy-dense and reversible storage of electrochemical energy in batteries. In this Review, we assess recent progress in the design, synthesis and analysis of SSEs, and identify key failure modes, performance limitations and design concepts for creating SSEs to meet requirements for practical applications. We provide an overview of the development and characteristics of SSEs, followed by analysis of ion transport in the bulk and at interfaces based on different single-valent (Li+, Na+, K+) and multivalent (Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+, Al3+) cation carriers of contemporary interest. We analyse the progress in overcoming issues associated with the poor ionic conductivity and high interfacial resistance of inorganic SSEs and the poor oxidative stability and cation transference numbers of polymer SSEs. Perspectives are provided on the design requirements for future generations of SSEs, with a focus on the chemical, geometric, mechanical, electrochemical and interfacial transport features required to accelerate progress towards practical solid-state batteries in which metals are paired with energetic cathode chemistries, including Ni-rich and Li-rich intercalating materials, sustainable organic materials, S8, O2 and CO2. Solid-state batteries based on electrolytes with low or zero vapour pressure provide a promising path towards safe, energy-dense storage of electrical energy. In this Review, we consider the requirements and design rules for solid-state electrolytes based on inorganics, organic polymers and organic–inorganic hybrids.

Designing solid-state electrolytes for safe, energy-dense batteries

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as an emerging class of crystalline porous materials have received much attention due to their tunable porosity, modifiable skeletons, and atomically precise structures. Besides, COFs can provide multiple high-rate charge carrier transport (electron, hole, and ion) pathways, including conjugated skeletons, overlapped π electron clouds among the stacked layers, and open channels with a variable chemical environment. Therefore, they have shown great potential in electrochemical energy storage (EES) and conversion (EEC). However, in bulk COFs, the defects always impede charge carrier conduction, and the difficulties in reaching deep-buried active sites by either electrons or ions lead to limited performance. To overcome these obstacles, numerous research studies have been carried out to obtain COF nanosheets (NSs). This review first describes the preparation strategies of COF NSs via bottom-up and top-down approaches. Then, the applications of bulk COFs and COF NSs in EES and EEC are summarized, such as in batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. Finally, key challenges and future directions in these areas are discussed.

Enabling High-Voltage Lithium-Metal Batteries under Practical Conditions

Covalent organic frameworks offer a molecular platform for integrating organic units into periodically ordered yet extended two- and three-dimensional polymers to create topologically well-defined polygonal lattices and built-in discrete micropores and/or mesopores. This polymer architecture is unique as it enables predesigning both primary- and high-order structures, greatly enhancing our capabilities of designing organic materials to produce predictable structures and to achieve unique properties and functions. Progress over the past 15 years in the design, synthesis and functional exploration of COFs has successively established the basis of the COF field and COFs have shown the great potential of chemistry in developing a class of amazing organic materials. In this review, we focus on analysing the historic developments of COFs to uncover a full materials and application picture by providing comprehensive yet clear guidance for molecular design, synthetic control and functional exploration. We scrutinise the structural components of COFs including building blocks, reactive sites and functional groups with the aim of finding the origins of structural designability and diversity, as well as multiple functionalities. We disclose strategies for designing and synthesising frameworks to construct various tailor-made interfaces, and for exploring skeletons and pores to design properties and functions. With well-defined skeletons, pores and interfaces that offer a chemical basis to trigger and control interactions with photons, excitons, phonons, polarons, electrons, holes, spins, ions and molecules, we illustrate the current status of our understandings of structure-property correlations, and unveil the principles for establishing a regime to design unique functions that originate from and are inherent to structures. We predict the key central issues in design and synthesis, the challenges in functional design and the future directions from the perspectives of chemistry, physics and materials science.

Covalent organic frameworks: an ideal platform for designing ordered materials and advanced applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with their porous structures that are accommodative of Li salts are considered to be potential candidates for solid-state fast Li+ conductors. However, Li salts simply infiltrated in the pores of solid-state COFs tend to be present in closely associate ion pairs, resulting in slow ionic diffusion dynamics. Here we incorporate cationic skeleton into the COF structure to split the Li salt ion pair through stronger dielectric screening. It is observed that the concentration of free Li+ ions in the resulting material is drastically increased, leading to a significantly improved Li+ conductivity in the absence of any solvent (up to 2.09 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 70 °C).

Cationic Covalent Organic Framework Nanosheets for Fast Li-Ion Conduction.

In recent years solid Li+ conductors with competitive ionic conductivity to those of liquid electrolytes have been reported. However, the incorporation of highly conductive solid electrolytes into the lithium-ion batteries is still very challenging mainly due to the high resistance existing at the solid–solid interfaces throughout the battery structure. Here, we demonstrated a universal interfacial modification strategy through coating a curable polymer-based glue electrolyte between the electrolyte and electrodes, aiming to address the poor solid–solid contact and thus decrease high interfacial resistance. The liquid glue exhibits both great wettability as well as chemical/electrochemical stability to most of the electrodes, and it can be easily solidified into a polymer electrolyte layer through a “post-curing” treatment.
