MERS outbreak in Korea was related to healthcare-associated infections. The number of healthcare workers infected with MERS were 39, of which 15 were nurses. We investigated knowledge, attitudes and preventive behaviors against MERS in nursing students who will serve as future nurses. This is a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire survey. Data were collected from 350 nursing students from April to May 2016. As a result, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between attitudes and prevention behaviors against MERS. (r=.387, p <.001). The effect of knowledge and attitudes on preventive behaviors against MERS was analyzed by 15.2% of the explanatory power of regression model and statistically significant by regression equation (F = 31.081, p <.001). This study suggests that nursing students need convergence educational programs to improve their attitudes and preventive behaviors against infectious diseases such as MERS. •

The Convergence Study of Nursing Students' Knowledge, Attitudes and Preventive Behaviors against MERS in South Korea

Geriatric nursing activities are closely related to patient safety; therefore, nurses' efforts to improve patient safety in geriatric hospitals are important. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between person-centered care practice, patient safety competence, and patient safety during nursing activities in geriatric hospitals. We used the following tools to investigate the factors affecting patient safety during nursing activities: (a) the Korean version of the Person-Centered Care Assessment Tool (P-CAT), (b) the Patient Safety Competence Assessment Tool for Nurses, and (c) the Patient Safety Nursing Activities Assessment Tool for geriatric nurses. The questionnaire survey was completed by 186 geriatric nurses in 12 geriatric hospitals from 1 August to 31 August 2018. We analyzed the survey data using a t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. We identified patient safety skills (β = 0.417, p < 0.001) and age (β = 0.209, p = 0.035) as key factors that influence patient safety during nursing activities. Therefore, to improve the quality of patient safety during nursing activities conducted by geriatric nurses, it is necessary to develop strategies to improve patient safety skills and expand the pool of competent nurses with clinical experience.

Person-Centered Care Practice, Patient Safety Competence, and Patient Safety Nursing Activities of Nurses Working in Geriatric Hospitals

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that affect nursing students’ performance on standard precaution of infection control. Methods: For the analysis of the study results, mistakes and percentages, descriptive statistics, Pearson’s coefficient, and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results: Among the participants, 76.5% received hospital infection education, and 72.5% experienced an exposure to blood or body fluid, and the most of the exposures were occurred during the first semester of the third year. The knowledge score was 20.08± 2.09, the awareness score was 4.63± .41, and the performance score was 4.34± .55. In the relationship between the standard precautions knowledge, awareness, and performance, the awareness and the performance were in positive correlations, while the factors that affected the performance level of the standard precautions were awareness and the school year (third year), which had 37.0% of the total exposures. Conclusion: In order to increase the performance level of the standard precautions among the nursing department students, after identifying the differences between school years and demands of the students, it is necessary to provide continuous and regular education of standard precautions.

Survey on Infection Control Status and Perceived Importance of ICP (infection control practitioner) in Long Term Care Hospital

This study was conducted to identify the degrees of awareness and performance of hospital infection control of early stage nurses working in medium and small sized hospitals. This survey was conducted for 15 days from Sep. 15 to Sep. 30, 2017. Data were then analyzed by SPSS Win 22.0 to determine the mean and SD, as well as to conduct t-tests, ANOVA, and Scheffe's test. The result were as follows: 1. There were significant differences in awareness of hospital infection according to urinary tract infection, respiratory infection, and disinfection of contaminated goods managements with age. 2. There were significant differences in performance of hospital infection according to hand washing (working department), fluid therapy (education need p<0.001), urinary tract (position), and respiratory infection management (position p<0.001). 3. The mean score of awareness and performance regarding hospital infection were significantly different (all items p<0.001). According to these results, systematic education for improving awareness and performance regarding hospital infection control by nursing staff in medium and small sized in hospitals should be conducted. In addition, organizational efforts to increase the number of early stage nurses and improve the usability of personal infection control devices should be encouraged.

This study was to identify the level of perception and practice of hospital infection control among nurses at geriatric hospitals for the convergent approach. Data were collected from October 29 to November 3, 2012, using hospital Infection control questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using a t-test, ANOVA and Correlation. The mean values of hospital infection control practice were lower than that of perception, the differences were statistically significant. There were statistically significant differences in the perception on age, education, existence of guidelines for infection control, and in the practice according to the existence of guidelines. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between perceptions of hospital infection control and practice. Therefore, it is necessary to provide continual opportunities for systematic, professional, and practical education, as well as to develop relevant programs aimed at improving the capacity of hospital infection control.
