In the past decade, the electrochemical energy storage devices have drawn great attention in many fields such as smart portable electronics and hybrid electric vehicles. Among various energy storage systems, the supercapacitors have been regarded as one of the most promising candidates owing to their high power density, long lifespan and low production cost. As known, the natural characteristics of electrode materials play an important role in determining the charge storage performance of supercapacitors. A great effort has been devoted to improving the energy density and cycling durability of supercapacitors by constructing hierarchical porous electrode materials with high specific capacity. The manganese cobalt oxides including MnCo2O4, CoMn2O4 and MnCo2O4.5 have been demonstrated to be promising battery-type electrode materials in supercapacitor application due to their high theoretical specific capacity, rich redox activity, abundant availability, and easy synthesis. However, the MnCo-oxides sometimes suffer from severe capacity deterioration due to the small specific surface area and poor electrical conductivity. In this review, the progress regarding the synthesis methods & structure control of manganese cobalt oxides-based materials has been summarized and discussed in details. The major goal of this work is to highlight the latest progress in using the existing strategies to enhance the final electrochemical performances of materials, including structural design, morphological control, and composite engineering. In addition, some potential challenges and effective strategies for the future research direction and development of manganese cobalt oxides-based electrode materials are proposed. It is believed that an in-depth understanding on the design of other transition metal oxides with ideal electrochemical properties is guided in the future. 

Recent advances on the manganese cobalt oxides as electrode materials for supercapacitor applications: A comprehensive review

Advanced hybrid supercapacitors assembled with high-performance porous MnCo2O4.5 nanosheets as battery-type cathode materials

Mg-ion supercapacitors (SCs) can be a potential candidate for advanced electrochemical energy storage devices because they are low-cost and safe and have long-term cycling stability. However, exhibiting high energy density while preserving high power density is still a challenge for Mg-ion supercapacitors, which limits their practical applications. Herein, we proposed cathode CoMn2O4 nanospheres embedded in N-doped graphene (CMO/G-N) and prepared via an improvised hydrothermal route. The material exhibited a capacitance of 691 F g–1 (1059 F cm–3) at 0.5 A g–1 in an aqueous Mg(ClO4)2 electrolyte. Additionally, as fabricated, the flexible Mg-ion asymmetric supercapacitor CMO/G-N//PCS (FMASC) exhibits energy and power densities of 61 and 34 W h kg–1 at 123 and 7407 W kg–1, respectively, with 87% retention of capacitance after 10,000 cycles. This study provides a neoteric perspective on building flexible energy storage devices using novel Mg-ion electrolytes. 

High-Performance Mg-Ion Supercapacitor Designed with a N-Doped Graphene Wrapped CoMn2O4 and Porous Carbon Spheres

Controllable cobalt-doped Mn3O4 cathodes: Ultrahigh-performance flexible zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors for extreme low-temperature conditions

The controlled deposition and post-deposition treatments are fundamental steps in the synthesis of thin films in the range of nanometer to several micrometers in thickness for various applications. Because the uniform coating of nano-particles of doped metal oxide modifies the properties of metal oxide, thin films of cobalt-doped manganese oxide are prepared using the Jet nebulizer spray pyrolysis procedure at a temperature of 300°C in this study. The thin films are annealed in an air environment for two hours at various temperatures, including 350°C, 450°C, and 550°C. Cobalt thin films were produced and annealed for two hours at 550 °C in the air before being tested. The effect of annealing temperature and atomic percentage content of dopant cobalt in manganese oxide thin film on their properties were characterized by XRD, photoluminescence spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopic technique, scanning electron microscopy, and EDX. The characterization of the thin film reveals that these thin films are made up of uniformly coated doped metal oxide particles with (002) plan as a preferential orientation of crystal growth and band gap energy in the span of 2.5 -1.65 eV. The sensing property of the thin films towards ethanol was also characterized.

Effect of cobalt doping and annealing on properties of manganese oxide thin films prepared using jet nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique

The mesoporous nanostructures of cobalt-doped (Co-doped) manganese oxides (MnOx) with controllable compositions are successfully synthesized by a facile inverse micelle sol-gel method. It can be found that with the addition of cobalt ions, the Mn-Co two-element spinel structure oxide is formed. Moreover, as the amount of cobalt ions increases, the shape of the agglomeration changes from rod to approximately spherical particles, and its average pore size decreases gradually, which is conducive to improve the specific surface area of the as-prepared product. The electrochemical measurements show that the specific capacitance of as-prepared mesoporous samples increases with the rise of Co-doped content. In particular, when the molar ratio of Mn/Co is 10:5, the synthesized mesoporous CoMn2O4 nanoparticles exhibit a high specific capacitance of 614.8 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. The final capacitance can still maintain 82.4% of the initial capacitance at 5 A g−1 after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, asymmetric supercapacitor assembled by CoMn2O4 and activated carbon also exhibits high energy density (29.5 Wh kg−1 at 799.7 W kg−1), high power density (8.0 kW kg−1 at 3.2 Wh kg−1) and excellent cycle stability (84.3% capacitance retention rate after 5000 cycles). The mesoporous CoMn2O4 with superior electrochemical performance has great potential in the application of high-performance supercapacitors.
