The pharmacology of resveratrol in animals and humans.

Diabetes mellitus has been recognized since antiquity. It currently affects as many as 285 million people worldwide and results in heavy personal and national economic burdens. Considerable progress has been made in orthodox antidiabetic drugs. However, new remedies are still in great demand because of the limited efficacy and undesirable side effects of current orthodox drugs. Nature is an extraordinary source of antidiabetic medicines. To date, more than 1200 flowering plants have been claimed to have antidiabetic properties. Among them, one-third have been scientifically studied and documented in around 460 publications. In this review, we select and discuss blood glucose-lowering medicinal herbs that have the ability to modulate one or more of the pathways that regulate insulin resistance, β-cell function, GLP-1 homeostasis, and glucose (re)absorption. Emphasis is placed on phytochemistry, anti-diabetic bioactivities, and likely mechanism(s). Recent progress in the understanding of the biological actions, mechanisms, and therapeutic potential of compounds and extracts of plant origin in type 2 diabetes is summarized. This review provides a source of up-to-date information for further basic and clinical research into herbal therapy for type 2 diabetes. Emerging views on therapeutic strategies for type 2 diabetes are also discussed.

Herbal Therapies for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Chemistry, Biology, and Potential Application of Selected Plants and Compounds

Several epidemiologic observations show that moderate wine drinking reduces cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Wine contains several polyphenols, and among them, resveratrol in particular has been shown to exert a number of important biologic activities on the cardiovascular system that may contribute to the protective effects of wine. The mechanisms through which resveratrol and other wine polyphenols protect from ischemic cardiovascular events are many, but protection from oxidative stress and radical oxygen species production, a facilitating activity on nitric oxide production and activity and the ability to modulate the expression of adhesive molecules by blood cells and the vascular wall seem to be the most important. In this overview, the in vitro and in vivo evidence on the activity of resveratrol on vascular function and circulating blood cells, with a special emphasis on blood platelets, is thoroughly presented.

The aim of current study was to investigate the effect of different levels of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZONPs) on growth Performance, digestive organs and serum lipids concentration in broiler chickens during starter phase (121d). Three hundred one-d-old broilers (Ross- 308) were randomly divided into 5 treatments including 75 birds. All treatments were replicated 4 times, using 15 birds in each pen. The experimental diet was T1) basal diet (control, without ZONPs), T2, T3, T4 and T5 supplementation basal diet with 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg/kg of ZONPs respectively. This study was lasted 21 d and birds accessed as ad libitum to feed and water throughout research. Live body weight (LBW) and feed intake (FI) measured as weekly and feed conversion ratio (FCR) calculated at the final of research. On d 21, 4 birds in each group were selected as randomly, blood samples collected from bronchial vein and after centrifuging (3000 rpm for 15 min at 4°C), serum removed and stored in 20 °C until analysis. The results revealed that ZONPs had significantly affected on body weight gain (P 0.05), triglyceride (TG) (P>0.05) and cholesterol (P>0.05), as well as increased high density lipoproteins (HDL) (P<0.05), respectively compared to control treatment. Serum copper and zinc concentrations in patients with chronic hepatitis C

This study was planned to investigate the pretreatment effect of resveratrol on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The control group consisted of 10 male albino Sprague-Dawley rats, 10-12 weeks of age, weighing approximately 295 g. The first experimental group consisted of 15 albino Sprague-Dawley rats, 10-12 weeks of age, weighing approximately 305 g. This group was administered streptozotocin (55 mg/kg, intraperitoneally). The second experimental group (n = 15) was administered resveratrol (0.5 ml/day) 10 days before streptozotocin induction. A training period was performed for all groups before the experimental procedure, and systolic arterial blood pressures and heart rates were recorded daily. At the end of the 10th day, blood samples of control and experimental groups were drawn. Total nitrite, nitrite, nitrate, malondialdehyde (MDA), copper, and zinc concentrations in plasma were measured both in control and experimental groups. Additionally, superoxide dismutase, catalase activities, and copper and zinc concentrations in red cell were determined in each group. At the end of the study, increases in catalase activity, nitric oxide level, and zinc concentrations and decreases in lipid peroxidation product MDA and copper concentrations were found in the resveratrol-pretreated diabetic group when compared to the diabetic group.

This preliminary study was planned to investigate the effects of resveratrol on oxidative-nitrosative stress markers and on trace element concentrations in blood and on circulatory system parameters in rats. Twenty-five Sprague-Dawley male rats, 10-12 weeks old, with mean body weight of 295 g were used in the study. Administration of resveratrol (0.5 ml/day) was performed in experimental group in 10 days. In control (n = 10) and in experimental groups (n = 15), after 1 week training period, systolic arterial blood pressures and heart rates were recorded daily. At the end of the tenth day, blood samples of control and experimental groups were drawn. Total nitrite, nitrite, nitrate, malondialdehyde, copper, zinc concentrations in plasma, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities and copper, zinc concentrations in red cell were determined both in control and experimental groups. Alterations in oxidative and nitrosative stress markers, trace element concentrations, and circulatory system parameters in experimental group compared to controls were observed. The results of this study were discussed according to the effect of resveratrol.
