This paper delves into the multifaceted concept of sustainability, covering its evolution, laws, principles, as well as the different domains and challenges related to achieving it in the modern world. Although capitalism, socialism, and communism have been utilized throughout history, their strengths and drawbacks have failed to address sustainable development comprehensively. Therefore, a holistic approach is necessary, which forms the basis for a new development model called sustainalism. This study proposes a new socio-economic theory of sustainalism that prioritizes quality of life, social equity, culture, world peace, social justice, and well-being. This paper outlines the six principles of sustainalism and identifies sustainalists as individuals who embrace these new concepts. This study also explores how to attain sustainalism in the modern world through a sustainable revolution, representing a step toward a sustainable era. In conclusion, this paper summarizes the key points and emphasizes the need for a new approach to sustainalism in the broader sense. The insights provided are valuable for further research on sustainalism and sustainability.

Sustainalism: An Integrated Socio-Economic-Environmental Model to Address Sustainable Development and Sustainability

European Union (EU) institutions and agencies are increasingly raising awareness on the circular economy agenda. They are encouraging marketplace stakeholders to engage in sustainable production and consumption behaviors by reducing, reusing, restoring, refurbishing and recycling resources in all stages of their value chain. Therefore, this research evaluates the latest European environmental policies including its ‘new circular economy plans for a cleaner and more competitive Europe’. Afterwards, it presents a systematic literature review that is focused on the circular economy in the EU context. The findings suggest that there are a number of opportunities as well as challenges for the successful planning, organization, implementation and measurement of circular economy practices for sustainable supply chains in Europe. This contribution identifies key implications and provides reasonable recommendations to policy makers and industry practitioners.

European environment policy for the circular economy : implications for business and industry stakeholders

With the rising freight demand, specialized heavy-haul railway corridors allow heavier trains to transport heavy freight, improving productivity and lowering unit costs. Generally, a heavy-haul corridor necessitates a significant investment, thus the risk assessment of a rail-track system must be extensively evaluated during the design phase. From the standpoint of serviceability, this study presents a probabilistic slope stability analysis of heavy-haul freight corridor using an efficient hybrid computational technique. The present approach, i.e., ANN-MPA, is an amalgamation of an artificial neural network (ANN) and marine predators algorithm (MPA). The newly constructed ANN-MPA was used to perform probabilistic analysis of a 12.293 m high embankment of heavy-haul freight corridor of Indian Railways with a design axle load of 32.5 MT. The concept of probability theory and statistics were used to map the soil uncertainties through the first-order second-moment method. The results of the proposed ANN-MPA model were evaluated and compared with other hybrid ANNs constructed with seven distinct swarm intelligence algorithms. In the validation phase, the proposed ANN-MPA outperformed (R2 = 0.9931 and RMSE = 0.0233) other hybrid ANNs and was used to perform probabilistic analysis of a 12.293 m high embankment. The reliability index and the probability of failure were computed under seismic and non-seismic conditions, taking into consideration the influence of uncertainties in soil parameters. Using the proposed approach, the failure probability of the 12.293 m high soil slope under different seismic conditions can be evaluated rationally and efficiently.

China's rapid economic growth has been fueled by industrialization and urbanization. Given its export focus, this industrialization was spatially concentrated in the coastal eastern cities. Over the last decade, a spatial transformation has taken place leading to a deindustrialization of the rich coastal cities and sharp industrial growth in the inland cities. This survey examines recent work that studies the economic geography of industrial production, per-capita income, pollution and quality of life in China's cities. We focus on the interaction between firms, local governments and the central government that together determine the new economic geography of industry and pollution within China.

The Evolving Geography of China's Industrial Production: Implications for Pollution Dynamics and Urban Quality of Life

Various economic growth patterns differ in sustainability. Taking China and India as examples, this study parses the connotation of leading‐industrialisation and crossing‐industrialisation economic growth patterns. In addition, a theoretical framework of sustainable development, including economic, social, environmental and demographic sustainability, is constructed. Furthermore, the comparative analysis and case study method are used to compare the sustainability of the two patterns. Results demonstrate that the leading‐industrialisation pattern relies on abundant and skilled human resources to promote the manufacturing industry, thereby achieving rapid and high‐quality economic growth at the expense of the environment. Although it is superior in social sustainability, such as poverty proportion, employment rate, price stability and health condition, the pattern can lead to a gap in wealth and an imbalance in urbanisation. By contrast, we reveal that the crossing‐industrialisation pattern depends on the elite talents and technological progress to promote the service industry with high economic potential, which is resource‐efficient and environment‐friendly. Meanwhile, it is characterised by a small gap between the rich and the poor, relatively balanced urbanisation and future demographic dividends. However, it cannot guarantee adequate employment, public health and stable prices with serious poverty. This study enriches the multidimensional framework of sustainable development and proposes several practical implications for the sustainable development of the two economic growth patterns.
