Large Language Models (LLMs) have a privacy concern because they memorize training data (including personally identifiable information (PII) like emails and phone numbers) and leak it during inference. A company can train an LLM on its domain-customized data which can potentially also include their users' PII. In order to comply with privacy laws such as the"right to be forgotten", the data points of users that are most vulnerable to extraction could be deleted. We find that once the most vulnerable points are deleted, a new set of points become vulnerable to extraction. So far, little attention has been given to understanding memorization for fine-tuned models. In this work, we also show that not only do fine-tuned models leak their training data but they also leak the pre-training data (and PII) memorized during the pre-training phase. The property of new data points becoming vulnerable to extraction after unlearning and leakage of pre-training data through fine-tuned models can pose significant privacy and legal concerns for companies that use LLMs to offer services. We hope this work will start an interdisciplinary discussion within AI and law communities regarding the need for policies to tackle these issues.

What can we learn from Data Leakage and Unlearning for Law?

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have become widely used in model training, as they can improve performance and/or protect sensitive information by generating data. However, this also raises potential risks, as malicious GANs may compromise or sabotage models by poisoning their training data. Therefore, it is important to verify the origin of a model's training data for accountability purposes. In this work, we take the first step in the forensic analysis of models trained on GAN-generated data. Specifically, we first detect whether a model is trained on GAN-generated or real data. We then attribute these models, trained on GAN-generated data, to their respective source GANs. We conduct extensive experiments on three datasets, using four popular GAN architectures and four common model architectures. Empirical results show the remarkable performance of our detection and attribution methods. Furthermore, we conduct a more in-depth study and reveal that models trained on various data sources exhibit different decision boundaries and behaviours. 

Detection and Attribution of Models Trained on Generated Data

We present the findings of the Machine Learning Model Attribution Challenge. Fine-tuned machine learning models may derive from other trained models without obvious attribution characteristics. In this challenge, participants identify the publicly-available base models that underlie a set of anonymous, fine-tuned large language models (LLMs) using only textual output of the models. Contestants aim to correctly attribute the most fine-tuned models, with ties broken in the favor of contestants whose solutions use fewer calls to the fine-tuned models' API. The most successful approaches were manual, as participants observed similarities between model outputs and developed attribution heuristics based on public documentation of the base models, though several teams also submitted automated, statistical solutions.
