Two-echelon multiple-vehicle location-routing problem with time windows for optimization of sustainable supply chain network of perishable food

We present an exact partial enumerative algorithm for the maximum clique problem. The pruning device used is derived from graph colorings. Pruning of the search tree is accomplished not only by the number of colors used to color a tree subproblem but also by using information gained in the process of coloring. This leads to increased pruning which translates into improved computational performance. Experimental results on test problems are presented.

An exact algorithm for the maximum clique problem with accelerated pruning

A mixed-integer, non-linear model is developed for designing robust global supply chain networks under uncertainty. Six resilience strategies are proposed to mitigate the risk of correlated disruptions. In addition, an efficient parallel Taguchi-based memetic algorithm is developed that incorporates a customized hybrid parallel adaptive large neighborhood search. Fitness landscape analysis is used to determine an effective selection of neighborhood structures, while the upper bound found by Lagrangian relaxation heuristic is used to evaluate quality of solutions and effectiveness of the proposed metaheuristic. The model is solved for a real-life case of a global medical device manufacturer to extract managerial insights.

Robust global supply chain network design under disruption and uncertainty considering resilience strategies: A parallel memetic algorithm for a real-life case study

During the last decade, countries around the world - especially the U.S., Brazil, and many in Europe - have worked to accelerate the commercialization of a biofuel industry. As pilot plant studies for the second-generation biofuel (e.g., cellulosic biofuel) currently seek to determine the most viable feedstocks and processing technologies, it is an opportune time to formulate operations research (OR) models of the biofuel supply chain (SC) so they might be used to implement the technologies that prove to be most promising. This paper provides a literature review of research on the biofuel SC. It classifies prior research according to decision time frame (i.e., strategic, tactical, operational, and integrated) as well as level in the supply chain (i.e., upstream, midstream, and downstream). In addition, it reviews related research on agri-products, which have some commonalities relative to harvesting and perishability; petroleum-based fuels, which have some commonalities related to distribution (some biofuels can be mixed with gasoline but others cannot); and generic supply chains, which provide some applicable modeling structures. Finally, this paper emphasizes unique needs to support decisions that integrate the farm with commercial levels (e.g., storage, pre-processing, refining, and distribution) and identifies fertile avenues for future research on the biofuel supply chain. OR models are needed to help assure the economic viability of the biofuel industry. They can be used by growers, processors, and distributors to design and manage an integrated system and by government to inform policies needed to stimulate the growth of the industry and, perhaps, subsidize it.

Biofuel and petroleum-based fuel supply chain research: A literature review

Although NAFTA has encouraged U.S.-based companies to locate assembly operations in Mexico, no widely-accepted tools provide decision support for the strategic design of an assembly system in this international environment. This paper provides such a decision support aid. The problem is to design an assembly system by prescribing facilities, including the location, technologies to be employed and capacity of each. Strategic aspects of the supporting supply chain are designed by selecting suppliers; locating distribution centers; planning transportation modes; and allocating target levels for production, assembly and distribution. The objective is to maximize after-tax profits. A mixed integer programming model is presented that represents the complexities of the international design problem as well as relevant enterprise-wide decisions in the US-Mexico business environment under NAFTA. It deals with a broad set of design issues (e.g., bill-of-material restrictions, international financial considerations, and material flow through the entire supply chain) using effective modeling devices. Several cases are investigated to demonstrate how managers might apply the model as a decision support aid. The examples show that the model can be successfully used to evaluate a variety of factors and analyze a number of tradeoffs related to the design of international assembly systems and supply chains.

Design of international assembly systems and their supply chains under NAFTA

The maximum weight-independent set problem (MWISP) is one of the most well-known and well-studied problems in combinatorial optimization. This article presents a novel approach to solve MWISP exactly by decomposing the original graph into vertex-induced subgraphs. The approach solves MWISP for the original graph by solving MWISP on the subgraphs to generate columns for a branch-and-price framework. The authors investigate different implementation techniques that can be associated with the approach, and offer computational results to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each implementation technique. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
