Shared decision-making is increasingly advocated as an ideal model of treatment decision-making in the medical encounter. To date, the concept has been rather poorly and loosely defined. This paper attempts to provide greater conceptual clarity about shared treatment decision-making, identify some key characteristics of this model, and discuss measurement issues. The particular decision-making context that we focus on is potentially life threatening illnesses, where there are important decisions to be made at key points in the disease process, and several treatment options exist with different possible outcomes and substantial uncertainty. We suggest as key characteristics of shared decision-making (1) that at least two participants-physician and patient be involved; (2) that both parties share information; (3) that both parties take steps to build a consensus about the preferred treatment; and (4) that an agreement is reached on the treatment to implement. Some challenges to measuring shared decision-making are discussed as well as potential benefits of a shared decision-making model for both physicians and patients.

Shared Decision-making in the Medical Encounter: What Does It Mean? (Or, It Takes at Least Two to Tango)

Purpose



– This paper aims to explore the influence of higher education institution (HEI) facilities on overall student satisfaction, and to identify the distinct facilities that most strongly influence student overall satisfaction with HEI facilities. 




Design/methodology/approach



– A tailor-made questionnaire is developed to measure student perception about student life, including their perceptions about the facilities at the HEI they attend. Two econometric models are estimated using OLS regression analysis. 




Findings



– The factor that most strongly influences student satisfaction with university facilities is the quality of its social areas, auditoriums and libraries. Conversely, it is determined that computer access on campus does not influence student satisfaction. 




Research limitations/implications



– The sample includes data only from a single university. Moreover, only Norwegian students at the university participated in the survey. 




Practical implications



– Based on our findings, the most effective strategy to improve student overall satisfaction with the facilities at an HEI is to improve the quality of social areas, auditoriums and libraries. Such a strategy will result in students who are more satisfied with the HEI they are attending and, thereby, increase the HEI’s chances of long-term success. 




Originality/value



– To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to identify the facilities that most strongly influence the overall satisfaction of students with the facilities at HEIs.

The importance of university facilities for student satisfaction at a Norwegian University

The last decade has seen a relative boom in the construction of central public libraries across North America. The social roles these public institutions play for society is a pressing issue in light of decreasing public funding, advancing information technologies, and an economy increasingly information-driven and decentralized. This article examines the public's use of two of Canada's largest central libraries, the Toronto Reference Library and the Vancouver Public Library Central Branch. The data gathered support the notion that these libraries fulfill many of the normative ideals of a successful public place and serve as important resources in the increasingly information-driven, knowledge-based economy. We conclude that private market interests encroaching upon this institution, and not advances in information technologies, represent a threat to its multifaceted role as a successful public place.

The Public Place of Central Libraries: Findings from Toronto and Vancouver

The Library Impact Data Project was a six-month project funded by Jisc and managed by the University of Huddersfield to investigate this hypothesis: “There is a statistically significant correlation across a number of universities between library activity data and student attainment.” E-resources usage, library borrowing statistics, and library gate entries were measured against final degree award for 33,074 undergraduate students across eight U.K. universities. The research successfully demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between library resource use and level of degree result; however, any conclusions drawn are not indicators that library usage and student attainment have a causal relationship.

Library Impact Data Project: Looking for the Link between Library Usage and Student Attainment

The focus of this article is to reflect on current and near future issues and trends concerning academic libraries. This includes an overview of the literature on embedded librarianship and a focus on the need for more participatory and collaborative approaches to library services.The core argument is that academic libraries need to continue to adapt their roles and develop stronger relationships across the university in order to maintain and promote their relevancy to all stakeholders. Embedded roles in research and teaching, and an embedded existence through collaboration and outreach will strengthen the academic library's presence within its parent institution.

Academic library non/low use and undergraduate student achievement: A preliminary report of research in progress

Performance measurement is a topic of current interest at both national and local level. This article is a selective historical review of performance measurement from the 1960s to the present day. Despite the plethora of literature on the topic there appears to be a notable lack of progress. Some of the major and most recent work is assessed and the fundamental difficulties in attempting to measure the performance of library services are noted. It is suggested that future work must concentrate on output measures which are both appropriate to the service being provided and easy to understand by all.

Browsing in public libraries

Objective The purpose of this paper is to identify the extent, if any, that digital technology can impact on the mental well being of children and young people, to determine some implications for practice, and to highlight any risks and/or barriers that may impede the use of such technology. Methods This study uses a 'state of the art' literature review methodology to achieve this objective. Structured searches for 1980- 2012 were conducted in three major subscription bibliographical databases, (Web of Knowledge, CINAHL and Proquest Nursing and Allied Health Source) during March 2012 by an Information Specialist working in partnership with the research team to identify English-language articles in press or published in peer-review academic journals. Results A state of the art literature review identified 21 papers from Europe, North America and Australia. All of the included studies are tabulated to some extent and themes and key issues identified and narrated through the lens of the state of the art review. Six themes emerged from the data synthesis. 1) Risks and benefits of digital technology, 2) Health support, information and self-assessment 3) Iatrogenesis of digital technology 4) Health seeking and support, 5) Modes of digital therapeutic support and 6) Robotics, resilience and enabling technologies. Conclusions There appears to be some benefits for some children and young people who use digital technology and social media to enhance their mental wellbeing, however, similar approaches could have a counter-productive effect. Collaboration to develop, design and undertake rigorous research around technological interventions would further enhance the evidence base for these approaches.
