Components of a systems approach for the management of Queensland fruit fly Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) in a post dimethoate fenthion era.

This paper reviews the available quarantine treatment technologies and current quarantine practices, such as fumigation, heat or refrigeration treatments, and non-host shipping protocols, that are used to prevent the spread of tephritid fruit flies. Areas where basic research is needed to develop alternative quarantine treatments are identified and discussed.

Irradiation for phytosanitary treatment of the Queensland fruit fly Bactrocera tryoni Froggatt benefits international trade

A circulated heated-air treatment at 92% RH to achieve and maintain a minimum fruit core temperature of 44°C for 2 h is shown to disinfest tomatoes against Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) for market access quarantine purposes. The efficacy of the treatment exceeded 99.99%, tested at the 95% confidence level. An estimated 78 439 eggs were used for large-scale trials, as the stage of the pest most tolerant of heat at the treatment temperature.

A heated air quarantine disinfestation treatment against Queensland fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) for tomatoes

Dipping of tomatoes for 3 min. in a solution of dimethoate of 425 mg/litre strength was shown to be effective against infestations of Queensland fruit fly. An efficacy standard of no survivors in 30 000 individuals treated was achieved; dimethoate residues were below the relevant maximum residue limit of 1 mg/kg, and no taint was produced in green or ripe fruit.
