The aim of the study was to examine the effect of the perceptions of students about classroom learning environment on their academic achievement at secondary level in the Mathematics classrooms. The participants were selected from the secondary and higher secondary schools located in Tehsil Rawalpindi and Islamabad (Federal Area), Pakistan. Twenty four schools were selected randomly. A total of five hundred sixteen students of 10th grade studying Mathematics in twenty seven classrooms, were included in the sample. Classroom Environment Instrument (Personal Form) was used to measure the students' perceptions after translating it into Urdu for Urdu medium schools. The pilot testing was carried out before the actual application of this instrument. The reliability of the instrument was determined by the use of Cronbach Alpha which was found as 0.85. The marks obtained by students in the subject of Mathematics in annual examination in 10th grade conducted by both BISE Rawalpindi and FBISE Islamabad were taken as achievements in Mathematics. The data was analyzed using multiple regression, Pearson r and ANOVA to find out the effect of perception of students about classroom learning environment on their academic achievement. The results of study revealed that the subscales, `Involvement', `Personal relevance', `Emphasis on understanding', were major predictors contributing towards classroom learning environment and students' academic achievement whereas subscales `Investigation' and `Autonomy' have negative effect on students' academic achievement. The researcher recommends that active involvement of the low achievers may affect their learning more positively.

Effect of Classroom Learning Environment on Students' Academic Achievement in Mathematics at Secondary Level.

We investigated differences between field-study classrooms and traditional science classrooms in terms of the learning environment and students’ attitudes to science, as well as the differential effectiveness of field-study classrooms for students differing in sex and English proficiency. A modified version of selected scales from the What Is Happening In this Class? questionnaire was used to assess the learning environment, whereas students’ attitudes were assessed with a shortened version of a scale from the Test of Science Related Attitudes. A sample of 765 grade 5 students from 17 schools responded to the learning environment and attitude scales in terms of both their traditional science classrooms and classrooms at a field-study centre in Florida. Large effect sizes supported the effectiveness of the field-studies classroom in terms of both the learning environment and student attitudes. Relative to the home school science class, the field-study class was considerably more effective for students with limited English proficiency than for native English speakers.

Field-study science classrooms as positive and enjoyable learning environments

Background Different teaching practices, such as autonomy support and structure, provide students with a positive learning context supporting their engagement, which can operate through their underlying motivation, including sense of competence and task value. Aims This study aims at investigating the best configuration (unique or synergistic) between autonomy support and structure to support student behavioural engagement, including compliance, participation, and misbehaviour, and reading achievement. A second objective is to assess students' sense of competence and task value as mediators linking teaching practices to student engagement and achievement. Sample The samples included 1,666 7th-grade students and their 85 teachers. Students answered questionnaires and tests at the beginning and the end of the school year. Methods Students' perceptions of the use of autonomy support and structure by their Language Arts teacher were aggregated at the classroom level. Students rated their sense of competence and task value in Language Arts class. Twice during the school year, they also reported three facets of their behavioural engagement (compliance, participation, and misbehaviour) and answered a reading comprehension test. Multilevel path analyses using Mplus7 allowed accounting for the nested structure of data. Results Student sense of competence mediated the association of student classroom-aggregated perceptions of teacher structure and autonomy support with self-reported participation in the classroom. Task value mediated the association between both teaching practices and student misbehaviour and compliance, as reported by students. Sense of competence was directly associated with later reading achievement, but the indirect effect of teaching practices was not significant. We found no significant interaction (synergistic effect) between teacher autonomy support and structure. Conclusion Student classroom-aggregated perception of teacher autonomy support and structure is important to nurture behavioural engagement. However, we found no extra benefit of combining these two dimensions of teaching practices. The processes linking these teaching practices to the three facets of student behavioural engagement were different. As such, to support the various aspects of student engagement, the actions of teachers, as reported by their students, should tap into the mechanisms that are most strongly related to each type of behaviour.
