In this two-part paper we present a collection of numerical methods combined into a single framework, which has the potential for a successful application to wind turbine rotor modeling and simulation. In Part 1 of this paper we focus on: 1. The basics of geometry modeling and analysis-suitable geometry construction for wind turbine rotors; 2. The fluid mechanics formulation and its suitability and accuracy for rotating turbulent flows; 3. The coupling of air flow and a rotating rigid body. In Part 2 we focus on the structural discretization for wind turbine blades and the details of the fluid–structure interaction computational procedures. The methods developed are applied to the simulation of the NREL 5MW offshore baseline wind turbine rotor. The simulations are performed at realistic wind velocity and rotor speed conditions and at full spatial scale. Validation against published data is presented and possibilities of the newly developed computational framework are illustrated on several examples. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Taylor-Couette flow, the flow between two coaxial co- or counter-rotating cylinders, is one of the paradigmatic systems in the physics of fluids. The (dimensionless) control parameters are the Reynolds numbers of the inner and outer cylinders, the ratio of the cylinder radii, and the aspect ratio. One key response of the system is the torque required to retain constant angular velocities, which can be connected to the angular velocity transport through the gap. Whereas the low–Reynolds number regime was well explored in the 1980s and 1990s of the past century, in the fully turbulent regime major research activity developed only in the past decade. In this article, we review this recent progress in our understanding of fully developed Taylor-Couette turbulence from the experimental, numerical, and theoretical points of view. Large eddy simulation of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow using isogeometric analysis and the residual-based variational multiscale method

While the low Reynolds number regime has been very well explored in the '80s and '90s of the last century, in the fully turbulent regime major research activity only developed in the last decade. In this paper we review this recent progress in our understanding of fully developed Taylor-Couette turbulence, from the experimental, numerical, and theoretical point of view. We will focus on the parameter dependence of the global torque and on the local flow organisation, including velocity profiles and boundary layers. Next, we will discuss transitions between different (turbulent) flow states. We will also elaborate on the relevance of this system for astrophysical disks (Keplerian flows). The review ends with a list of challenges for future research on turbulent Taylor-Couette flow.

High Reynolds number Taylor-Couette turbulence

We investigate the dynamical and statistical features of turbulent Taylor–Couette flow (for a radius ratio 0.5) through three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) at Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 to 8000. We show that in three-dimensional space the Gortler vortices are randomly distributed in banded regions on the wall, concentrating at the outflow boundaries of Taylor vortex cells, which spread over the entirecylinder surface with increasing Reynolds number. Gortler vortices cause streaky structures that form herringbone-like patterns near the wall. For the Reynolds numbers studied here, the average axial spacing of the streaks is approximately 100 viscous wall units, and the average tilting angle ranges from 16° to 20°. Simulationresults have been compared to the experimental data in the literature, and the flow dynamics and statistics are discussed in detail.

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent Taylor–Couette flow

The direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Taylor–Couette flow in the fully turbulent regime is described. The numerical method extends the work by Quadrio and Luchini [M. Quadrio, P. Luchini, Eur. J. Mech. B/Fluids 21 (2002) 413–427], and is based on a parallel computer code which uses mixed spatial discretization (spectral schemes in the homogeneous directions, and fourth-order, compact explicit finite-difference schemes in the radial direction). A DNS is carried out to simulate for the first time the turbulent Taylor–Couette flow in the turbulent regime. Statistical quantities are computed to complement the existing experimental information, with a view to compare it to planar, pressure-driven turbulent flow at the same value of the Reynolds number. The main source for differences in flow statistics between plane and curved-wall flows is attributed to the presence of large-scale rotating structures generated by curvature effects.
