A system for managing and documenting a local area communications network is provided which deploys power sourcing equipment and powered devices by the use of active electronic modules, having an Ethernet controller and Power over Ethernet forwarding capabilities, as integral, managed components within the cable plant, to enhance management, documentation, security and emergency 911 aspects of the network as well as extending the physical reach of the network.

A powered communications patch panel is adapted to power network devices connected to the communications patch panel. Power is supplied to the network devices by the powered communications patch panel over the communication cabling. The powered communications patch panel may be provided with a management port to allow remote management of the patch panel via a network connection. Multiple management ports may be provided, allowing patch panels to be connected to one another in a daisy-chain configuration.

The switch element includes a receive segment that can add a virtual storage area network (“VSAN”) tagging header to frames that are received by the receive segment; and strip the VSAN tagging header before frames are sent to ports that do not support virtual fabric capability. An incoming frame's VSAN identity value is compared to a control word entry to generate a value used for routing the incoming frame. The table is used to determine if a frame is part of a virtual fabric. The routing table for each port is used to route frames and the routing table includes entries for supported virtual fabrics.

The housing includes a middle portion ( 112 ), a top portion ( 111 ) coupled to the middle portion, and a bottom portion ( 113 ) coupled to the middle portion opposite the top portion. The middle portion has a first region ( 163 ), a second region ( 161 ) substantially opposite the first region, and a third region ( 162 ), where the third region is between the first region and the second region. The power port is located at the first region, the first universal serial bus port is located at the second region, and the second universal serial bus port is located at the third region.

If the primary blade flag is not selected, then selecting a blade with an EBP priority number if the EBP priority number is less than a retained priority number.

A stackable network unit comprises a ‘down’ port and an ‘up’ port, an arbitration path for data packets from the down port to the up port, a repeat path for data packets from the up port to the down port, a link detector for detecting tile absence of another operative unit connected to the down port to cause data packets on the return pat to bypass the down port and proceed on the arbitration path and for detecting the absence of another operative unit connected to the up port to cause data packets on the arbitration path to bypass the up port and proceed on the repeat path.

Method and apparatus for configuration of stackable units in packet-based communications systems

A stackable network hub unit comprises 'up' 12 and 'down' 11 ports with data paths 14,15 between them. Means are provided at each port to detect the presence of a link to another stackable unit and the type of link. If no unit is detected the port is bypassed and data packets are directed from one data path to the other, as per UNITS 1 and 3 , and the ring network is thereby formed. A 'resilient' cable may be connected between the 'up' port of the top unit and the 'down' port of the bottom unit on the stack (Fig. 4) to allow a bidirectional ring to be formed, that can operate with one link of unit out of service. The network units contain configuring means which transmit configuration packets containing source unit identification and its 'down' port connection status data, ie. normal connection, resilient cable or no connection. A unit receiving the packet compares this 'down' port status data with its own 'down' port status according to the table. If it wins it transmits a new configuration packet with its own identifier and port status, if not it forwards the packet it received. When a unit receives a packet with its own identification it becomes the bottom of the stack and other units are numbered therefrom. This scheme allows hot configuration of the stack and can accommodate hub unit failure and incorrect use of connection cables.
