Grassland bird response to harvesting switchgrass as a biomass energy crop
Amber M. Roth,David W. Sample,Christine A. Ribic,Laura K. Paine,Daniel J. Undersander,Gerald A. Bartelt +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the impact of an August harvest of switchgrass for bioenergy on community composition and abundance of Wisconsin grassland bird species of management concern and found that switchgrass harvesting in August resulted in changes in vegetation structure and bird species composition the following nesting season.

Some ecological and socio-economic considerations for biomass energy crop production
Laura Paine,Todd L. Peterson,Daniel J. Undersander,Kenneth C. Rineer,Gerald A. Bartelt,Stanley A. Temple,David W. Sample,Richard M. Klemme +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors suggest a regional approach to ensure that energy crop production will proceed in an ecologically and economically sustainable way, and suggest that three types of agricultural land be targeted for perennial biomass energy crops: (1) highly erodible land; (2) wetlands presently converted to agricultural uses; and (3) marginal agricultural land in selected regions.

Associations of Grassland Birds with Landscape Factors in Southern Wisconsin
TL;DR: The authors investigated the association of grassland birds with field-and landscape-level habitat variables in south-central Wisconsin during 1985-1987 and found that only landscape variables were associated with the density of bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus), eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna) and all birds that were grassland species of management concern.

Impacts of tree rows on grassland birds and potential nest predators: a removal experiment.
TL;DR: Impacts of removing rows of trees and shrubs that intersected grasslands on potential nest predators and the three most abundant grassland bird species are measured at sites in Wisconsin, U.S.A.
Grassland Bird Use of Remnant Prairie and Conservation Reserve Program Fields in an Agricultural Landscape in Wisconsin
TL;DR: In this article, the authors determined the densities of grassland birds in remnant prairie patches and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields and compared those to managed agricultural habitat types (pastures, alfalfa hay and strip crop fields).
