This paper examines response rates (RR) in published research in business and management journals. Its aim is to evaluate the efficacy of RR-enhancing strategies, explore differences in RR between sub-disciplines and geographical regions, provide a critical appraisal of RR in business and management research, and offer guidelines for assessing and improving RR in business and management research. Data are analysed from 1093 survey-based papers published between 2009 and 2013 in a representative sample of business and management journals. The results of the study are discussed, and their implications for RR in business and management research are provided.

Response Rates in Business and Management Research: An Overview of Current Practice and Suggestions for Future Direction

Nonresponse is a prominent problem in sample surveys. At face value, it reduces the trust in survey estimates. Nonresponse undermines the probability-based inferential mechanism and introduces the potential for nonresponse bias. In addition, there are other important consequences. The effort to limit increasing nonresponse has led to higher survey costs—allocation of greater resources to measure and reduce nonresponse. Nonresponse has also led to greater survey complexity in terms of design, implementation, and processing of survey data, such as the use of multiphase and responsive designs. The use of mixed-mode and multiframe designs to address nonresponse increases complexity but also introduces other sources of error. Surveys have to rely to a greater extent on statistical adjustments and auxiliary data. This article describes the major consequences of survey nonresponse, with particular attention to recent years.

Survey methodology has been and continues to be a pervasively used data-collection method in social science research. To better understand the state of the science, we first analyze response-rate information reported in 1014 surveys described in 703 articles from 17 journals from 2010 to 2020. Results showed a steady increase in average response rate from 48% in 2005 to 53% in 2010 to 56% in 2015 and 68% in 2020; a marked increase in the number of surveys per published article from 1.27 in 2015 to 1.79 in 2020; and that variables that predict response-rate fluctuations over time are related to research design (e.g. data-collection medium), participant motivation (e.g. incentives), and researcher motivation (i.e. number of surveys per article). Second, we propose complementary information on contemporary response-rate norms and benchmarks with a response-rate validity assessment framework to gather evidence on accuracy of inferences based on a particular response-rate level. Implementing this validation process involves gathering information on the researcher–participant relationship, participant qualifications and motivation, survey length and complexity, and cultural and national context. Future survey research should implement the validity assessment framework in addition to reporting the response-rate value to better indicate a sample’s quality, appropriateness, and representativeness.

A current challenge in conducting telephone surveys is obtaining satisfactory representation among young adults. Surveys using random-digit dial (RDD) or directory-listed sample frames exclude the approximately 28 percent of adults age 18 to 24 who live in households without landline phone service. In addition to this well-documented coverage issue, a further problem is the potential difficulty in contacting and interviewing the 70 percent of young adults who do live in households with landline phone service. RDD telephone surveys may further under-represent the full population of young adults by excluding those young adults who primarily rely on cell phones and are difficult to reach by landline phones. Young adults who primarily use cell phones may have important similarities with those who only have wireless phone service. Excluding them would therefore negatively effect survey representativeness. To better understand the potential impact of phone usage patterns on nonresponse among young adults, this paper examines patterns of landline and cell phone use among adults age 18 to 24 and assesses the impact of these usage patterns on nonresponse bias. The data we use are drawn from an RDD-based survey on health behaviors that targeted young adults in the state of New York. All participants were asked about their current phone service and usage patterns with respect to both landline and cell phones. We examined whether and how the presence, number, and sharing of cell phones in households was related to young adults’ responsiveness to landline phone calls. In addition, we expected (and found) that young adults interviewed via landline phones would report significantly greater use of cell phones versus landline phones. Bringing several demographic characteristics and health indicators into the analysis, we then assessed how young adults’ reliance on wireless phone service could potentially contribute to nonresponse error in RDD surveys on health behaviors.
