Superhigh brightness, reliability, and modularization are three key features of state-of-the-art high-brightness solid state lighting, such as high-power white light-emitting diodes (white LEDs) and white laser diodes (white LDs). However, these features are inevitably limited by the organic resin packing material, as a crucial component of the white lighting device, because of its unstable property at high temperature and low thermal conductivity. Here, we report a robust light convertor that can simultaneously play key roles as a phosphor and an alternative encapsulating material via phosphor-in-glass (PiG) engineering. All-Inorganic Light Convertor Based on Phosphor-in-Glass Engineering for Next-Generation Modular High-Brightness White LEDs/LDs

Energy efficiency and lighting quality considerations are driving research into laser-pumped white light sources. Laser diodes as pump sources for downconversion phosphors promise freedom from "droop" that adversely affects the efficiency of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). High-intensity laser diode-pumped light sources for applications such as search lights and automobile headlights have been demonstrated recently. Our paper describes the design and construction of a domestic/office-type solid-state luminaire driven by light from an integrated violet laser-diode module. A trichromatic phosphor made from a blend of separate europium-containing rare-earth phosphors was used as the downconversion medium. Mechanical and optical design of the reflector and the phosphor plate are described. Characteristics of both the pump light and the downconverted light are also described. Our studies also looked at the variation of chromaticity coordinates with variation in pump power and the effect of laser speckle on the lamp's light output. Finally, there is a brief discussion of energy conversion efficiency and longevity considerations, comparing pumping with LEDs versus pumping with laser diodes.

Laser-phosphor lighting has great potential because a laser diode (LD) could keep high efficiency under high current. Remote phosphor configuration has been studied, but a phosphor-covered LD has not been reported due to several difficulties. In the present work, we develop a novel laser-driven white emitter. Without remote phosphor configuration, the white emitter has a very simple structure, making it is easy for mass production and standardization. Under a continuous wave driving current of 3 A, it emits 850 lm with correlated color temperature of 6990 K. The wall-plug efficacy is 70 lm/W for the maximum. The laser-driven white emitter is very suitable for Etendue-limited applications due to its very small emitting size of 0.45  mm×0.2  mm.

LaOF:Tb 3+ nanophosphors were synthesized by modified sonochemical route using extracted Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea powder as surfactant. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the tetragonal phase of samples. Morphology of the products was tuned by changing the influential experimental parameters. Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) was used to investigate the defect chemistry of the prepared samples. PAS specified the presence of defects at crystallite boundaries, vacancy clusters and large voids in the prepared compounds. Photoluminescence emission spectra consists of characteristic green emissions owing to 5 D 4  →  7 F J (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions of Tb 3+ ions. The estimated critical distance between dopant ions was found to be ∼16.60 A is majorly responsible for the dipole-dipole interaction and concentration quenching. The photometric study such as Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage, Correlated Color Temperature and Color purity indicates that the obtained phosphors could be a promising green component for optoelectronic applications in particular to white LEDs.
