Evaluating recovery, cost, and throughput of different concentration methods for SARS-CoV-2 wastewater-based epidemiology.
Zachary W. LaTurner,David M. Zong,Prashant Kalvapalle,Kiara Reyes Gamas,Austen Terwilliger,Tessa Crosby,Priyanka Ali,Vasanthi Avadhanula,Haroldo Hernandez Santos,Kyle Weesner,Loren Hopkins,Pedro A. Piedra,Anthony W. Maresso,Lauren B. Stadler +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the recovery, cost, and throughput of five different concentration methods for quantifying SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA in wastewater samples and evaluated the use of a bovine coronavirus vaccine as a process control and pepper mild mottle virus as a normalization factor.

Wastewater Analysis of SARS-CoV-2 as a Predictive Metric of Positivity Rate for a Major Metropolis
Lauren B. Stadler,Katherine B. Ensor,Justin R. Clark,Prashant Kalvapalle,Zachary W. LaTurner,Mojica L,Austen Terwilliger,Zhuo Y,Priyanka Ali,Avadhanula,Roberto Bertolusso,Tessa Crosby,Hernandez H,Hollstein M,Kyle Weesner,David M. Zong,David Persse,Pedro A. Piedra,Anthony William Maresso,Loren Hopkins +19 more
TL;DR: Wastewater monitoring for SARS-CoV-2 has been suggested as an epidemiological indicator of community infection dynamics and disease prevalence and demonstrated robust tracking of positivity rate for populations served by individual treatment plants, findings which were used in real-time to make public health interventions.
Improvement of a potential anthrax therapeutic by computational protein design
Sean J. Wu,Christopher B. Eiben,John H. Carra,Ivan Huang,David M. Zong,Peixian Liu,Cindy T. Wu,Jeff Nivala,Josef A. Dunbar,Tomas Huber,Jeffrey L. Senft,Rowena D Schokman,Matthew D. Smith,Jeremy H. Mills,Arthur M. Friedlander,David Baker,Justin B. Siegel +16 more
TL;DR: This study shows that circular permutation of CapD improved production properties and dramatically increased kinetic thermostability, and identifies an amino acid substitution that dramatically decreased transpeptidation activity but not hydrolysis.

Self-destructive altruism in a synthetic developmental program enables complex feedstock utilization
TL;DR: This work introduces the altruistic developmental program as a tool for synthetic biology, demonstrates the utility of population dynamics models to engineer multicellular behaviors and provides a testbed for probing the evolutionary biology of self-destructive altruism.

Evaluating recovery, cost, and throughput of different concentration methods for SARS-CoV-2 wastewater-based epidemiology
Zachary W. LaTurner,David M. Zong,Prashant Kalvapalle,Kiara Reyes Gamas,Austen Terwilliger,Tessa Crosby,Priyanka Ali,Vasanthi Avadhanula,Haroldo Hernandez Santos,Kyle Weesner,Loren Hopkins,Pedro A. Piedra,Anthony W. Maresso,Lauren B. Stadler +13 more
TL;DR: Of the five methods tested head-to-head, it was found that HA filtration with bead beating performed the best in terms of sensitivity and cost and can serve as a guide for laboratories establishing a protocol to perform wastewater monitoring of SARS-CoV-2.
