Dialogism versus Monologism: A Bakhtinian Approach to Teaching

The major part of this article is taken up with an analysis of the television documentary The Roots of War, which played a pivotal role in the Channel 4 `Bloody Bosnia' season, screened in the summer of 1993. The analysis involves a critique of the programme's mode of argumentation in which a single, ostensibly authoritative account is given of deep-rooted ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia while failing to provide adequate substantiation and evidence. This fairly typical `serious' documentary is contrasted unfavourably with an ideal type of critical social theory. The latter is self-reflexive about its modes of reasoning, aware of multiple perspectives and ontological complexity, and scrupulous about its use of evidence and explanatory procedure (past-modern). Social Theory, the Civic Imagination and Documentary Film: A Past-modern Critique of the `Bloody Bosnia' Season's the Roots of War

This book explores Henry James's imaginative engagements with the burgeoning consumer culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, focusing on his hitherto neglected fascination with shops and the shopping experience. Examining a wide range of the author's fiction and non-fiction in the context of developments such as the rise of the department store, the growing public presence of women shoppers and shop workers, and the increasing sophistication of commodity display and advertising, the book argues that consumer desire constitutes an integral part of James's understanding of modern subjectivity. It also demonstrates that the structures and strategies of commodity culture are deeply embedded in his style, his aesthetic and his conception of authorship. The study offers new readings of familiar and less familiar texts, and includes a wealth of original historical documentation that has been gleaned from contemporary newspapers, periodicals, advertising manuals, sales catalogues and guidebooks.

Henry James and the Culture of Consumption

Beginning with a discussion of the famous episode in Lyndall Gordon's A Private Life of Henry James of the disposal of Constance Fenimore Woolson's clothes, this article explores the hybrid genre of the "biographical novel" through a comparison of Colm Toibin's The Master and David Lodge's Author, Author. There are some striking similarities between these two works, and this reveals the extent to which Henry James's version of his own life has given shape to all subsequent accounts of it. At the same time, each novelist gives us a Henry James in his own image, and Harold Bloom's theory of literary history helps us to understand how Lodge and Toibin have attempted to overcome the influence of a writer that each of them holds in very high regard.
