Rachel Jeantel was the leading prosecution witness when George Zimmerman was tried for killing Trayvon Martin, but she spoke in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and her crucial testimony was dismissed as incomprehensible and not credible. The disregard for her speech in court and the media is familiar to vernacular speakers and puts Linguistics itself on trial: following Saussure, how do we dispel such ‘prejudices’ and ‘fictions’? We show that Jeantel speaks a highly systematic AAVE, with possible Caribbean influence. We also discuss voice quality and other factors that bedeviled her testimony, including dialect unfamiliarity and institutionalized racism. Finally, we suggest strategies for linguists to help vernacular speakers be better heard in courtrooms and beyond.

The effects of orthognathic surgery on speech: a review

Objectives: To examine patients’ and parents’ perceptions and expectations from orthodontic treatment. Study Design: 491 patients (274 female, 217 male) aged 14–22 years, and 399 parents (245 female, 154 male) completed a questionnaire about preferences, needs and expectations about orthodontic treatment, and scored the present problem. Continuous variables were compared by Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests, whereas Chi-square test was used for categorical variables. Results: Patients’(77.1%) and parents’(84.6%), decision about orthodontic treatments were influenced by suggestion of dentists. Patients who decided to attend to clinic by themselves were higher than parents (p=0.006). Dental aesthetics was the determinant factor for treatment demand for patients(61.0%) and parents(57.3%). Improvement in oral functions was more important for Class III patients than Class I patients (p=0.040). Speech production before and after orthognathic surgery: A review

In this investigation a group of individuals with Angle Class III malocclusions were studied radiographically to determine their tongue posture at rest and during phonation of /s/. Their speech and hearing was also evaluated. All of the subjects had normal hearing, while eleven of the twelve in the group showed some degree of sibilant distortion. At rest, these Class III subjects demonstrated a tongue posture that was lower than normal and more retruded. During the phonation of /s/ these individuals also demonstrated retrusion of the tongue in an apparent attempt to achieve a normal relationship of the tongue tip to the maxillary anterior teeth, an increased amount of mandibular depression, and a greater than normal distance between the tongue tip and the mandibular anterior teeth. Despite the compensatory movements exhibited by these individuals with Class III malocclusions, normal /s/ production was found in only one of the twelve subjects studied. This is in contrast to the successful compensations that result in normal /s/ production seen in a great number of individuals with a Class III, Division 1 malocclusion, as demonstrated by Subtelny, Mestre and Subtelny.
