Reduced Adipose Tissue Oxygenation in Human Obesity: Evidence for Rarefaction, Macrophage Chemotaxis, and Inflammation Without an Angiogenic Response
Magdalena Pasarica,Olga Sereda,Leanne M. Redman,Diana C. Albarado,David Hymel,Laura E. Roan,Jennifer Rood,David H. Burk,Steven R. Smith +8 more
TL;DR: Adipose tissue rarefaction might lie upstream of both low AT pO2 and inflammation in obesity, and novel approaches to treat the dysfunctional AT found in obesity are suggested.

Relation of adipose tissue to metabolic flexibility
Lauren M. Sparks,Barbara Ukropcova,Jana M. Smith,Magdalena Pasarica,David Hymel,Hui Xie,George A. Bray,John M. Miles,Steven R. Smith +8 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that body fat, larger adipocytes, failure of insulin to suppress NEFAs, decreased adiponectin levels and inflammation markers in adipose tissue are associated with decreased insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and oxidation, which is an important component of reduced metabolic flexibility.

Adipose Tissue Collagen VI in Obesity
Magdalena Pasarica,Barbara Gowronska-Kozak,David H. Burk,Isabel Remedios,David Hymel,Jeff Gimble,Eric Ravussin,George A. Bray,Steven R. Smith +8 more
TL;DR: These results are consistent with basic science data and suggest that COL6A3 might contribute to adipose tissue inflammation, suggesting that weight gain is accompanied by changes in the expression of COL6 a3.
Lower Total Adipocyte Number but No Evidence for Small Adipocyte Depletion in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
Magdalena Pasarica,Hui Xie,David Hymel,George A. Bray,Frank L. Greenway,Eric Ravussin,Steven R. Smith +6 more
TL;DR: Compared with obese subjects, type 2 diabetic patients had larger mean adipocyte size and 67% bigger very large adipocytes; the total adipocyte number was lower, but the fraction of small adipocytes was increased by 27%.
