Numerical models in simulating wire-plate electrostatic precipitators: A review

A well-defined two-stage ESP experiment was carried out in the submicron particle size range The experimental setup consisted of five components: a clean wind tunnel, a submicron particle generation system, an aerosol sampling and transport system, a submicron particle number concentration measurement system, and a pilot-scale two-stage parallel-plate ESP Experimental collection efficiency data were obtained with a GMD of 003–02 μm and a GSD of about 167 for air velocities between 19 and 41 m/s under the nominal operation condition of two-stage ESP The experimental data were then compared with the results of a numerical collection efficiency model which takes into consideration charging rate equations, particle equations of motion, and collection performance models The comparison showed good agreement It was confirmed from the comparison that the partial charging regime, where a portion of incoming particles is not charged, exists when the particle size range is below about 003 μm This

Charging and Collection of Submicron Particles in Two-Stage Parallel-Plate Electrostatic Precipitators

In this paper, the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow in a single wire-plate electrostatic precipitator has been analyzed numerically by employing a hybrid Finite-Element Method-Method of Characteristics numerical algorithm and the commercial computational fluid dynamic software FLUENT6.2. Parameters defining both the electric and the flow fields were predicted. The interaction between the electric and the flow fields has been discussed by adopting the proposed two-way coupling algorithm. With the help of the dimensionless analysis, an entire flow regime map has been developed for different Reynolds (Re) and EHD numbers. It was found that, at very low Re (15) and high EHD (2000) (based on the corona wire) numbers, the EHD flow dominates in the channel; as Re increases, the significance of the EHD wakes gradually decreases; at a higher Re (50) or a lower EHD (500) numbers, the EHD flow becomes the near-corona-wire phenomena, and the main flow dominates the channel. The possible influence of the EHD flow on the particle-collection efficiency was also discussed.

Effect of emitting electrode number on the performance of EHD gas pump in a rectangular channel

An accurate and efficient numerical scheme is presented for calculating electrical conditions inside wire‐duct electrostatic precipitators. A Galerkin finite‐element method with quadratic interpolation is employed in solving Poisson’s equation to yield the electric potential solution. A backward difference method is utilized to compute the space‐charge density from the continuity equation. The two methods are iteratively applied until convergence criteria for electric potential and current density are met. Computed potential and electric field values show good agreement with analytic solutions and experimental measurements. Comparisons between the present scheme and a finite‐difference scheme show that the finite‐element method offers distinct advantages in predicting the electrical characteristics of precipitators.
