According to one embodiment, a light emitting device includes a light emitting element, a light reflector and a sealing resin layer. The light emitting element has a first major surface and a side surface and has an optical axis of emitted light perpendicular to the first major surface. The light reflector has a light reflecting surface capable of reflecting emission light from the side surface of the light emitting element. The sealing resin layer covers the light emitting element and the light reflecting surface, and includes a first curved surface having a vertex on the optical axis and being convex toward light emitting side and an envelope surface generated by moving a second curved surface. The second curved surface has a vertex on a line passing through the light reflecting surface and being parallel to the optical axis and is convex toward the light emitting side.

Light-emitting device

A compact and efficient optical system featuring planar multi-layered LED light source arrays concentrating their polarized or unpolarized output within a limited angular range. The optical system manipulates light emitted by a planar light emitters such as electrically-interconnected LED chips. Each light emitting region in the array is surrounded by reflecting side-walls whose output is processed by elevated prismatic films, polarization converting films, or both. The optical interaction between light emitters, reflecting sidewalls and the elevated prismatic films create overlapping virtual images between emitting regions that contribute to the greater optical uniformity. Practical illumination applications of such uniform light source arrays include compact LCD of DMD video image projectors, as well as general lighting, automotive lighting, and LCD backlighting.

Uniform illumination system

A vehicle system is disclosed that includes a vehicle lamp assembly including a plurality of LEDs that emit white light so as to function as an illuminator light. The lamp assembly also may include a plurality of LEDs that emit colored light, such as red or red-orange, so as to function as a signal light. Alternatively or additionally, the lamp assembly may include a camera of a vehicle imaging system. The lamp assembly may serve as a center high mounted stop light or as a tail light. The system also includes a controller that rapidly pulses the LEDs on and off at a rate that is imperceivable by the human eye. The pulsing intervals of the LEDs may be related to the readout intervals of the camera sensor array. In this manner, the LEDs may be pulsed on during camera readout so as to increase their intensity while the camera is capturing an image, or may be pulsed off during camera readout to prevent feedback glare from interfering with image capture by a highly sensitive image sensor array of the camera.

Systems and components for enhancing rear vision from a vehicle

A hand held dental instrument for curing light-curable compounds comprises a housing and an array of solid state, light emitting junctions or dies for generating light having wavelengths within a narrow band of wavelengths (e.g. 400-500 nm). Preferably, a peak wavelength of 470 nm is generated. The device further comprises an optical fiber light pipe for capturing the light and transmitting a beam of the light to a work surface containing a light-curable compound. An optical lens or lenses may be used for focusing the light into the light pipe.

Apparatus and method for curing materials with radiation

A replacement light tube for replacing a fluorescent light tube includes a bulb portion extending between a first end and a second end, the bulb portion comprising a support structure, a plurality of white light emitting diodes (LEDs) and an elongate light-transmissive cover. The support structure has a first surface extending between the first end and the second end. The plurality of LEDs are supported by the first surface and arranged between the first end and the second end. The elongate light-transmissive cover extends between the first end and the second end and over the first surface of the support structure. A first end cap and a second end cap are disposed on the first end and the second end, respectively, each configured to fit with a socket for a fluorescent light tube. A power supply circuit is configured to provide power to the plurality of LEDs. The plurality of LEDs are arranged to emit light through the elongate light-transmissive cover and at least a portion of the power supply circuit is packaged inside at least one of the end caps.

The principles of non-imaging optics, rather than imaging optics, are used to provide a high power LED illumination lamp that has a specified limited viewing angle. A compound parabolic flux extractor extracts and concentrates light emitted by an LED chip and a light pipe continues the concentration into the specified viewing angle. A lens or a diffusant may be used to modify the light output of the lamp. A light constructed as an array of the lamps is suitable for use as an automobile external light such as a center high mounted stop light.

Nonimaging light source

A lens for a light emitting diode (LED) lamp is formed as two ellipses rather than as one. The ellipses are axially symmetric and are translated away from the optical axis with each ellipse having a focus located on the LED chip away from the central bond pad so that the bond pad shadow does not decrease on-axis light intensity. In alternative embodiments, the depression located at the intersection of the two ellipses is flattened and the axes of the two ellipses are translated away from the optical axis and are also tilted.
