A bus system is provided for implantable medical devices. The bus system provides for flexible and reliable communication between subsystems in an implantable medical device. The bus system facilitates a wide variety of communications between various subsystems. These various subsystems can include one or more sensing devices, processors, data storage devices, patient alert devices, power management devices, signal processing and other devices implemented to perform a variety of different functions.

Further, device driver code operable in the operating system on the motherboard will upload the previously downloaded programmed instructions from the intelligent host adapter so that the programmed instructions may be reloaded to the host adapter in response to reset conditions, power management events, and other conditions.

The host adapter includes a host first bus controller, coupled to the first bus, and a host second bus controller, coupled to the second bus. Each of the media adapters contain a media first bus controller, coupled to the first bus, and a select number of media adapters contain a media second bus controller, coupled to the second bus. In this configuration, information initiated as a multiple data phase transaction is transferred between the host adapter and media adapters over the first bus and information initiated as a single data phase transaction is transferred between the host adapter and the select number of media adapters over the second bus.
