Hypermedia applications can be defined as collections of interactive and multimedia documents that are organized as a hypertext net. The development of hypermedia applications poses specific problems, such as the need for modeling sophisticated navigational structures, interactive behaviors, and harmonic presentations involving the synchronization of contents. Moreover, the increasing popularity of Internet based systems has put stress on the lack of mechanisms to formally specify security policies when designing hypermedia applications. Traditional design models and methodologies are not suitable for hypermedia applications and the up-to-now developed hypermedia oriented models do not cover the whole set of design needs. In this context, we present Labyrinth, a hypermedia oriented model providing formal elements to describe the static structure and dynamic behavior of this kind of nonlinear, multisensory, and interactive applications.

Multimedia software engineering

We propose an integrated memory and disk cache for managing the resources of a multimedia client's computer or set-top box. The cache cushions the multimedia decoder from input rate fluctuations and mismatches, and because data can be cached to disk, the acceptable fluctuations can be very large. This lets the client operate efficiently at low cost when the network rate is much larger or smaller than the media display rate, and gives the media server much greater flexibility for balancing workload and supporting VCR-like functions. We analyze the memory requirements for this cache, and analytically derive safe values for its control parameters. Using a realistic case study, we examine the interaction between memory size, peak input rate, and disk performance, and show that a relatively modest amount of main memory can support a wide range of scenarios.

MEDIC: a memory and disk cache for multimedia clients

The software engineering life cycle encompasses a broad range of activities, from the initial elicitation of the system requirements to the continuing evolution of the operational system. These activities can be best supported if there is a unifying paradigm which can integrate functional and non-functional problem-solving, process management, and knowledge acquisition and reuse. The decision based software development (DBSD) paradigm structures the software development and evolution process as a continuous problem-solving and decision making activity. In the DBSD paradigm, the software engineering team identifies and articulates software development problems, proposes alternative solutions, and develops supporting justifications from which a decision is made. Perspectives in multimedia software engineering

This paper describes our experience in using a multimedia project management and software engineering environment, Decision-based Hyper-multimedia CASE (DHC), to support the Low-Visibility Landing and Surface Operations (LVLASO) project at the NASA Langley Research Center. The purpose of the LVLASO project is to allow pilots to land and taxi airplanes when visibility is impeded due to adverse weather conditions. NASA is supporting this effort by developing new software and hardware for use on the flight deck. We are utilizing DHC to capture the decisions and documents generated during this project''s life cycle. DHC supports a new Decision-based Systems Development paradigm, which allows the organization of the project by the decisions which shape the end-products and associated documents. The experiences summarized in this paper demonstrate the value of a hyperlinked multimedia project space in developing large, group collaborative projects.
