Publicly available datasets are an indispensable tool for researchers, as they allow testing new algorithms on a wide range of different scenarios and making scientific experiments verifiable and reproducible. Research in IoT security is no exception. In particular, the design of traffic classification and intrusion detection solutions for network security relies on network traces obtained from real networks or realistic testbeds. In this paper, we provide a detailed survey on the existing datasets containing IoT network traffic. We classify them according to several features that help researchers quickly find the datasets that fit their specific needs. In total, we survey 74 datasets that we found by analyzing more than 100 scientific articles. We also discuss the weaknesses of existing datasets, identify challenges, and point to future directions for creating new IoT datasets. 

A Survey of Public IoT Datasets for Network Security Research

Several market sectors are attracted by the potential of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), such as delivery, agriculture, and cinema, among others. UAVs are becoming part of Internet of Things (IoT) networks in the development of autonomous and scalable solutions. However, these vehicles are gradually becoming attractive targets for cyberattacks. This study proposes the development of an efficient platform based on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol for UAV control and Denial-of-Service (DoS) detection embedded in the UAV system. For the efficiency test, latency, network and memory consumption on the platform were measured, in addition to the correlation between payload and delay time. The results of efficiency tests were collected for the three levels of quality of service (QoS). A strong correlation greater than 90% was found between delay and data size for all QoS levels, showing almost a linear proportion. In DoS detection, the best results were a true positive rate (TPR) of 0.97 with 16 features from the AWID2 dataset using LightGBM with Bayesian optimization and data balancing. Unlike other studies, the built platform shows efficiency for UAV control and guarantees security in the communication with the broker and in the Wi-Fi UAV network.

Development of an Efficiency Platform Based on MQTT for UAV Controlling and DoS Attack Detection

Within Industry 4.0, drones appear as intelligent devices that have brought a new range of innovative applications to the industrial sector. The required knowledge and skills to manage and appropriate these technological devices are not being developed in most universities. This paper presents an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based smart educational mechatronics system that makes use of a motion capture (MoCap) laboratory and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) to teach UAV knowledge and skills, within the Educational Mechatronics Conceptual Framework (EMCF). The macro-process learning construction of the EMCF includes concrete, graphic, and abstract levels. The system comprises a DJI Phantom 4, a MoCap laboratory giving the drone location, a Simulink drone model, and an embedded system for performing the HIL simulation. The smart educational mechatronics system strengthens the assimilation of the UAV waypoint navigation concept and the capacity for drone flight since it permits the validation of the physical drone model and testing of the trajectory tracking control. Moreover, it opens up a new range of possibilities in terms of knowledge construction through best practices, activities, and tasks, enriching the university courses.

UAV-Based Smart Educational Mechatronics System Using a MoCap Laboratory and Hardware-in-the-Loop

This article aims to present the results of a bibliometric analysis of relevant literature and discuss the main research streams related to the topic of risks in drone applications. The methodology of the conducted research consisted of five procedural steps, including the planning of the research, conducting a systematic review of the literature, proposing a classification framework corresponding to contemporary research trends related to the risk of drone applications, and compiling the characteristics of the publications assigned to each of the highlighted thematic groups. This systematic literature review used the PRISMA method. A total of 257 documents comprising articles and conference proceedings were analysed. On this basis, eight thematic categories related to the use of drones and the risks associated with their operation were distinguished. Due to the high content within two of these categories, a further division into subcategories was proposed to illustrate the research topics better. The conducted investigation made it possible to identify the current research trends related to the risk of drone use and pointed out the existing research gaps, both in the area of risk assessment methodology and in its application areas. The results obtained from the analysis can provide interesting material for both industry and academia.

Risks of Drone Use in Light of Literature Studies

The number of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) used in various industries has increased exponentially, and abnormal detection of UAVs is one of the primary technical means to ensure that UAVs can work normally. Currently, most anomaly detection models are trained using on-board logs from drones. However, in some cases, using these logs can be problematic due to data encryption, inconsistent descriptions of characteristics, and imbalanced positive and negative samples. Consequently, the on-board logs of UAVs may not be directly usable for training anomaly detection models. Given the above problems, this paper proposes a Time Line Modeling (TLM) method based on the UAV software-in-the-loop (SITL) simulation environment to obtain and process the on-board failure logs of drones. The Time Line Modeling method includes two stages: the Fault Time Point Anchoring Method and Fault Time Window Stretching Method. First, based on the SITL simulation environment, multiple flight missions were constructed. Failures of several common components of UAVs are designed. Secondly, the fault’s initial location and end location are determined by the method of Fault Time Point Anchoring, and the original collection of tagged UAV’s on-board data is realized. Then, in terms of data processing, the features that are not universal are removed, and the flight data of the UAV is optimized by using the data balance method of Time Window Stretching to achieve the balance of normal data and abnormal data. Finally, use of algorithms such as Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO), Random Forest (RF), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) were used to experiment with the processed data. The experimental results showed that the data set obtained based on this method can be effectively applied to the training of machine learning-based anomaly detection models.

Acquisition and Processing of UAV Fault Data Based on Time Line Modeling Method

There has been a significant increase in the adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics project-based learning. However, the risks that education providers place their student and staff under is often unknown or undocumented. Low-end consumer drones used within the education sector are vulnerable to state-of-the-art cyberattacks. Therefore, datasets are required to conduct further research to establish cyber defenses for UAVs used within the education sector. This paper showcases the development of the ECU-IoFT dataset, documenting three known cyber-attacks targeting Wi-Fi communications and the lack of security in an affordable off-the-shelf drone. At present, there are no publicly available labeled datasets that reflect cyberattacks on the Internet of Flying Things (IoFT). The majority of the publicly available network traffic datasets are emulated and do not reflect the scenarios/attacks from a real test setup. This dataset will be beneficial for both cybersecurity researchers to develop defense strategies and UAV manufacturers to design more secure products. In the future, endeavors will be taken to incorporate newer attacks and create datasets appropriate for big data analysis.
