Data Jackets are human-made metadata for each dataset, reflecting peoples’ subjective or potential interests. By visualizing the relevance among DJs, participants in the market of data think and talk about why and how they should combine the corresponding datasets. Even if the owners of data may hesitate to open their data to the public, they can present the DJs in the Innovators Marketplace on Data Jackets that is a platform for innovations. Here, participants communicate to find ideas to combine/use/reuse data or future collaborators. Furthermore, explicitly or implicitly required data can be searched by the use of tools developed on DJs, which enabled, for example, analogical inventions of data analysis methods. Thus, we realized a data-mediated birthplace of seeds in business and science. In this paper, we show a new direction to collect and use DJs to fit social requirements externalized and collected in living labs. The effect of living labs here is to enhance participants’ sensitivity to the contexts in the open society according to the author’s practices, and the use of DJs to these contexts means to develop the process of evidence-based innovation, i.e., the loop of living humans’ interaction to create dimensions of performance in businesses.

Data Jackets as Communicable Metadata for Potential Innovators – Toward Opening to Social Contexts

Summary. This research presents a dialog-based framework of design team thinking and discovery that synthesizes an inquiry-based design thinking model and a con-ceptual-exploration process model. The framework is applied in order to code the dialog acts of teams engaged in conceptual design activity, and measure designteam processes related to generating design alternatives and making decisions. Preliminary results highlight relationships between the two models, and support the tentative conclusion that team performance on a conceptual design task is positively correlated with the frequency of a dialogue act termed, “limit-handling.” Remaining challenges include fully integrating and validating prior models and validating dialogue facilitation techniques to support conceptual design, decision analysis, and risk analysis.

ConExSIR: A Dialogue-based Framework of Design Team Thinking and Discovery

Synchrony, the natural time-dependence of behavior in human interaction, is a pervasive feature of communication. However, most studies of synchrony have focused on dyadic interaction. In the current work, we explore synchrony in three-person teams using immersive virtual reality. Participants spent about two hours collaborating on four separate design tasks. The tracking data from the VR system allowed precise measurement of head and hand movements, facilitating calculation of synchrony. Results replicated previous work that found nonverbal synchrony in dyads in immersive VR. Moreover, we manipulated the context of the task environment, an informal garage or a traditional conference room. The environment for the task influenced synchrony, with higher levels occurring in the conference room than the garage. We also explored different methods of extending synchrony from dyads to triads, and explore the relationship of synchrony to turn taking and gaze. This paper provides theoretical insights about nonverbal synchrony and how design work functions in triads and provides suggestions for designers of VR to support good collaboration.

This working paper describes preliminary research on creative and evaluative processes in conversations in which alternative courses of action are being developed for a decision at hand. Research has identified five key conversational moves that form the basis of a process for creating, expanding, and evaluating concept networks, which ar eat ype of semantic network.Tentative suggestions are offered regarding how this type of process could be employed in Decision Analysis as well as Chance Discovery. Consideration is given to how precedents from the practice of Decision Analysis might be applied in the practice of Chance Discovery.
