Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have been a hot research topic due to their facile synthesis, excellent optical and optoelectronic properties, and record-breaking efficiency of corresponding optoelectronic devices. Nowadays, the development of miniaturized high-performance photodetectors (PDs) has been fueling the demand for novel photoactive materials, among which low-dimensional MHPs have attracted burgeoning research interest. In this report, the synthesis, properties, photodetection performance, and stability of low-dimensional MHPs, including 0D, 1D, 2D layered and nonlayered nanostructures, as well as their heterostructures are reviewed. Recent advances in the synthesis approaches of low-dimensional MHPs are summarized and the key concepts for understanding the optical and optoelectronic properties related to the PD applications of low-dimensional MHPs are introduced. More importantly, recent progress in novel PDs based on low-dimensional MHPs is presented, and strategies for improving the performance and stability of perovskite PDs are highlighted. By discussing recent advances, strategies, and existing challenges, this progress report provides perspectives on low-dimensional MHP-based PDs in the future.

Low-Dimensional Metal Halide Perovskite Photodetectors.

The performance of organometallic perovskite solar cells has rapidly surpassed those of both traditional dye-sensitized and organic photovoltaics, e.g. solar cells based on CH3NH3PbI3 have recently reached 18% conversion efficiency. We analyze its electronic structure and optical properties within the quasiparticle self-consistent GW approximation (QSGW ). Quasiparticle self-consistency is essential for an accurate description of the band structure: bandgaps are much larger than what is predicted by the local density approximation (LDA) or GW based on the LDA. Several characteristics combine to make the electronic structure of this material unusual. First, there is a strong driving force for ferroelectricity, as a consequence the polar organic moiety CH3NH3. The moiety is only weakly coupled to the PbI3 cage; thus it can rotate give rise to ferroelectric domains. This in turn will result in internal junctions that may aid separation of photoexcited electron and hole pairs, and may contribute to the current-voltage hysteresis found in perovskite solar cells. Second, spin orbit modifies both valence band and conduction band dispersions in a very unusual manner: both get split at the R point into two extrema nearby. This can be interpreted in terms of a large Dresselhaus term, which vanishes at R but for small excursions about R varies linearly in k. Conduction bands (Pb 6p character) and valence bands (I 5p) are affected differently; moreover the splittings vary with the orientation of the moiety. We will show how the splittings, and their dependence on the orientation of the moiety through the ferroelectric effect, have important consequences for both electronic transport and the optical properties of this material.

Electronic structure of hybrid halide perovskite photovoltaic absorbers

As star material, perovskites have been widely used in the fields of optics, photovoltaics, electronics, magnetics, catalysis, sensing, etc. However, some inherent shortcomings, such as low efficiency (power conversion efficiency, external quantum efficiency, etc.) and poor stability (against water, oxygen, ultraviolet light, etc.), limit their practical applications. Downsizing the materials into nanostructures and incorporating rare earth (RE) ions are effective means to improve their properties and broaden their applications. This review will systematically summarize the key points in the design, synthesis, property improvements and application expansion of RE-containing (including both RE-based and RE-doped) halide and oxide perovskite nanomaterials (PNMs). The critical factors of incorporating RE elements into different perovskite structures and the rational design of functional materials will be discussed in detail. The advantages and disadvantages of different synthesis methods for PNMs will be reviewed. This paper will also summarize some practical experiences in selecting suitable RE elements and designing multi-functional materials according to the mechanisms and principles of REs promoting the properties of perovskites. At the end of this review, we will provide an outlook on the opportunities and challenges of RE-containing PNMs in various fields.

Rare-earth-containing perovskite nanomaterials: design, synthesis, properties and applications

Perovskites form an important and enormous class of inorganic compounds. Recently, perovskite materials have attracted extensive research interest owing to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Deep insights into the relationships between the crystal structure, electronic structure and properties play an important role in the development of new functional materials and high-performance devices. In this review, after a brief introduction, we first discuss the crystal structure and crystal chemistry of perovskites according to their three classes: standard perovskites, low-dimensional perovskites and perovskite-like halides. Next, the electronic structure and luminescence from different physical origins are presented. Then, we present a survey on the design, synthesis and luminescence properties of different perovskites, including halide perovskites, oxide perovskites, and lanthanide- or transition metal-doped perovskites, also including dimension-different perovskites (3D, 2D, 1D and quantum dots). We also summarize the strategies for improving the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and chemical stability, including by surface passivation, encapsulation and doping. Finally, we review their applications and give a brief outlook.

Luminescent perovskites: recent advances in theory and experiments

In the last few years, all-inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbX3) quantum dots have shown unprecedented radical progress for practical applications in the optoelectronic field, but they quickly decompose when exposed to air. The in situ growth of the CsPbX3 particles inside amorphous glass can significantly improve their stability. Unfortunately, it is formidably difficult to precipitate whole-family CsPbX3 from a glass matrix and their photoluminescence quantum yields require further improvement. Herein, fluoride additives were introduced into oxyhalide borosilicate glasses to break the tight glass network, which promoted the nucleation/growth of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Cl/Br, Br, Br/I and I) inside the glass. Importantly, the quantum efficiencies of glass-stabilized CsPbBr3, CsPb(Br/I)3 and CsPbI3 reached 80%, 60% and 50%, respectively, which are the highest efficiencies reported so far. Benefiting from the effective protection of robust glass, CsPbX3 quantum dots exhibited superior water resistance with more than 90% luminescence remaining after immersing them in water for 30 days, and halogen anion exchange among different CsPbX3 materials was completely inhibited. Two prototype light-emitting diodes were constructed by coupling green/red and green/orange/red quantum dots with InGaN blue chips, yielding bright white light with optimal luminous efficiency of 93 lm W−1, tunable color temperature of 2000–5800 K and high color rendering index of 90.

Promoting photoluminescence quantum yields of glass-stabilized CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite quantum dots through fluorine doping

In the past few years, metal halide perovskite quantum dots and nanocrystals have been extensively explored due to their unique optoelectronic properties and extensive application prospects. In this review article, we provide an overview of the synthesis, microstructure variation, luminescence properties and potential applications of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites and all-inorganic perovskites. Firstly, several widely used wet chemical methods for synthesizing perovskite quantum dots are summarized, and then the related structures and morphologies of different perovskites as well as the relationship between the microstructure and optical properties are given. Additionally, correlative metal halides with B-site ion replacement or doping and some strategies to improve the stability of perovskite materials are highlighted. Subsequently, a brief introduction about their potential applications in light-emitting diodes, photodetectors and lasing is presented. Finally, some conclusions and outlooks will be introduced. It is expected that this review article will provide valuable insights into the current status of perovskite luminescent materials and stimulate new ideas and further research on their practical applications.
