It is highly demanded to steer the charge flow in photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen reactions (PHRs). In this study, we developed a smart strategy to position MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) at the S vacancies on a Zn facet in monolayered ZnIn2S4 (Vs-M-ZnIn2S4) to craft a two-dimensional (2D) atomic-level heterostructure (MoS2QDs@Vs-M-ZnIn2S4). The electronic structure calculations indicated that the positive charge density of the Zn atom around the sulfur vacancy (Vs) was more intensive than other Zn atoms. The Vs confined in monolayered ZnIn2S4 established an important link between the electronic manipulation and activities of ZnIn2S4. The Vs acted as electron traps, prevented vertical transmission of electrons, and enriched electrons onto the Zn facet. MoS2 Quantum Dot Growth Induced by S Vacancies in a ZnIn2S4 Monolayer: Atomic-Level Heterostructure for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Heterojunctions of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and Bi2MoO6 were solvothermally synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM. The photocatalytic degradation activity of the g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 composites for Rhodamine B was examined under visible light irradiation. The heterojunction composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than pure g-C3N4 or Bi2MoO6. The photocatalytic activity of the composites increased then decreased with increasing Bi2MoO6 content. The g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction with a Bi2MoO6 content of 16.1 wt.% exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, and its photocatalytic efficiency was more than three times those of pure g-C3N4 or Bi2MoO6. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 heterostructure photocatalyst was attributed predominantly to the efficient separation of photoinduced electrons and holes. The g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction photocatalyst exhibited excellent stability and reusability. A detailed mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity is discussed. Superoxide radicals were the major active species. This study provides a visible light responsive photocatalyst with potential in environmental remediation applications.

Synthesis and characterization of g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 heterojunctions with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

We have realized in-situ growth of ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on the sheet-like g-C3N4 surfaces to construct a "sheet-on-sheet" hierarchical heterostructure. The as-synthesized ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 heterojunction nanosheets exhibit remarkably enhancement on the photocatalytic activity for H2 production. This enhanced photoactivity is mainly attributed to the efficient interfacial transfer of photoinduced electrons and holes from g-C3N4 to ZnIn2S4 nanosheets, resulting in the decreased charge recombination on g-C3N4 nanosheets and the increased amount of photoinduced charge carriers in ZnIn2S4 nanosheets. Meanwhile, the increased surface-active-sites and extended light absorption of g-C3N4 nanosheets after the decoration of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets may also play a certain role for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Further investigations by the surface photovoltage spectroscopy and transient photoluminescence spectroscopy demonstrate that ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 heterojunction nanosheets considerable boost the charge transfer efficiency, therefore improve the probability of photoinduced charge carriers to reach the photocatalysts surfaces for highly efficient H2 production.

Hierarchical Sheet-on-Sheet ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 Heterostructure with Highly Efficient Photocatalytic H2 production Based on Photoinduced Interfacial Charge Transfer.

Highly reductive RGO (reduced graphene oxide)/ZnIn2S4 nanocomposites with a sheet-on-sheet morphology have been prepared via a facile one-pot solvothermal method in a mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and ethylene glycol (EG) as solvent. A reduction of GO (graphene oxide) to RGO and the formation of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on highly reductive RGO has been simultaneously achieved. The effect of the solvents on the morphology of final products has been investigated and the formation mechanism was proposed. Facile One-Pot Solvothermal Method to Synthesize Sheet-on-Sheet Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO)/ZnIn2S4 Nanocomposites with Superior Photocatalytic Performance

Different pathways for the degradation of rhodamine (RhB) as well as different activity order for the degradation of RhB and methyl orange (MO) were observed over hexagonal ZnIn2S4 microspheres and cubic ZnIn2S4 nanoparticles. A detailed study of the physicochemical and surface properties of these two ZnIn2S4 polymorphs has been carried out to elucidate these phenomena. The results reveal that hexagonal ZnIn2S4 microspheres are composed of nanolamella petals growing in the ab plane, i.e., the negative (0001) S plane. This negative (0001) S plane not only is favorable for the adsorption of the cationic dye RhB via —N(Et)2 groups but also can accumulate the photogenerated holes. These make the hole-directed photocatalytic de-ethylation of RhB more expedient over hexagonal ZnIn2S4 microspheres.
