Surface Texture Manufacturing Techniques and Tribological Effect of Surface Texturing on Cutting Tool Performance: A Review

Surface texturing and its influence on tribological systems performances represent one of the main research topics nowadays. Textures functionality is initially ensured by correct optimization of its geometrical parameters, but the influence of textures quality is not to be neglected. Therefore, a proper selection of fabrication methods appropriate for each individual application is imperative. The process of selection is somehow exhaustive due to abundance of parameters and selection criterions. Hence, this paper proposes a general classification of texture manufacturing techniques, used nowadays within industrial manufacturing and research platforms, with pertinent description of each process including key advantages and drawbacks concerning their application within mechanical systems.

Manufacturing textured surfaces: State of art and recent developments:

Surface texture is one of the hot spots in the field of surface tribology. It promotes friction by storing lubricating oil and abrasive particles, and in some cases it can also improve hydrodynamic effects. Since it has been widely used in mechanical parts, tribological characteristics and surface quality cannot be ignored. Nowadays, there are many ways to fabricate surface texture. Several classification methods based on different processing principles are introduced in this paper. It includes direct laser ablation, mechanical processing, EDM and ECM in material reduction processing, laser cladding, deposition method, and electroforming in additive processing and laser shock processing in deformation processing. The surface texture with good quality can be obtained by selecting proper machining method and proper machining parameters. The machining principle of each method, the research status of surface morphology of surface texture, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are summarized. Finally, potential hybrid processing methods including their advantages and disadvantages as well as examples are presented.

Tribological characteristics and advanced processing methods of textured surfaces: a review

A combined surface treatment of surface texturing-double glow plasma surface titanizing on AISI 316 stainless steel to combat surface damage: Comparative appraisals of corrosion resistance and wear resistance

Ti3AlC2 reinforced Co–based alloy coatings were fabricated on H13 steel using a laser cladding (LC). The morphologies, chemical elements and phases of obtained coatings was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS), and X–ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The effects of Ti3AlC2 mass fraction on the microstructure and friction–wear performances at 600 °C were investigated, and the wear mechanism was also discussed. The results show that the average coefficients of friction (COFs) of Co–based alloy coatings decrease with the increase of Ti3AlC2 mass fraction, exhibiting the excellent friction reduction. The continuous friction layer is formed by the Ti3AlC2 and oxidation products of Co–based coatings at high temperature, which is the main factor of friction reduction. The wear rate of Co–based–5%Ti3AlC2 is the lowest among the three kinds of coatings, the wear mechanism is combined of oxidative wear, adhesive wear and abrasive wear. The O contents of Co-based alloy coatings increase with the increase of Ti3AlC2 mass fraction, which are less than 3% at 600 °C, presenting the outstanding oxidation resistance.

The present invention relates to a composite processing method of laser texturing and micro-alloying of roller surface in the technical field of material processing. The method, more specifically, comprises spraying a film containing alloy micro-powder on the roller surface. The alloy micro-powder containing film can increase the laser energy adsorption ability of the roller basal surface and can melt, through laser heating, into the base material to form a new alloy material. Under the effect of laser beams, the film fuses with the base body and forms textured pits. Compared with the prior laser texturing method, the present invention has the advantages that the roller surface is micro-alloyed simultaneously when laser-textured, deepening the textured pits, increasing the boss height and the border definition, improving the hardness and the wear-resistant performances of the roller surface and prolonging the service life of the roller in the premise of guaranteeing the textured surface roughness..

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Studies of Surface Topography of Laser Textured Roller

In recent years, interests have been growing for fast tool servo (FTS) systems to increase the capability of existing single-point diamond turning machines. Although piezoelectric actuator is the most universal base of FTS system due to its high stiffness, accuracy and bandwidth, nonlinearity in piezoceramics limits both the static and dynamic performance of piezoelectric-actuated control systems evidently. To compensate the nonlinear hysteresis behavior of piezoelectric actuators, a hybrid model coupled with Preisach model and feedforward neural network (FNN) has been described. Since the training of FNN does not require a special calibration sequence, it is possible for on-line identification and real-time implementation with general operating data of a specific piezoelectric actuator. To describe the rate dependent behavior of piezoelectric actuators, a hybrid dynamic model was developed to predict the response of piezoelectric actuators in a wider range of input frequency. Experimental results show that a maximal error of less than 3% was accomplished by this dynamic model.
