Recent advances in deep learning have led to the development of accurate and efficient models for various computer vision applications such as classification, segmentation, and detection. However, learning highly accurate models relies on the availability of large-scale annotated datasets. Due to this, model performance drops drastically when evaluated on label-scarce datasets having visually distinct images, termed as domain adaptation problem. There are a plethora of works to adapt classification and segmentation models to label-scarce target dataset through unsupervised domain adaptation. Considering that detection is a fundamental task in computer vision, many recent works have focused on developing novel domain adaptive detection techniques. Here, we describe in detail the domain adaptation problem for detection and present an extensive survey of the various methods. Furthermore, we highlight strategies proposed and the associated shortcomings. Subsequently, we identify multiple aspects of the problem that are most promising for future research. We believe that this survey shall be valuable to the pattern recognition experts working in the fields of computer vision, biometrics, medical imaging, and autonomous navigation by introducing them to the problem, and familiarizing them with the current status of the progress while providing promising directions for future research.

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation of Object Detectors: A Survey

The detection and localization of craters on the Moon and other planets play an essential role in planet landing, spacecraft navigation, and geologic study. Historically, craters detection involves manually measuring the size and placement of craters in surface images. In this paper, we propose an automated pipeline named CraterNet to detect craters on the Moon and Mercury from DEM images. Firstly, the convolutional neural network (CNN) based object detection model is trained and tested to detect the craters in a supervised manner. To address the domain discrepancy between the source and target data, an unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) approach combined with domain randomization is suggested. A causal inference-based feature matching (CIFM) approach integrated with histogram matching is then developed to improve the effectiveness the unsupervised crater detection. The DeepMoon crater dataset and the unsupervised Mercury crater DEMs are introduced in this paper to illustrate the applicability and efficacy of the designed method. Results indicate that (1) The developed approach demonstrates a high performance of supervised crater detection on the DeepMoon dataset, with the F1 and AP scores of 0.786 and 0.804, respectively. (2) The detection model is transferred and performs well on the Mercury dataset in which craters are of different sizes and shapes, as the Precision, Recall, and F1 score for ellipse-shape craters are 0.734, 0.773, and 0.753, respectively. (3) The proposed CraterNet outperforms other deep learning-based segmentation and detection models in terms of crater detection and localization scores.

Unsupervised Domain Adaption of Object Detectors: A Survey

Scene text detection in the wild is a hot research area in the field of computer vision, which has achieved great progress with the aid of deep learning. However, training deep text detection models needs large amounts of annotations such as bounding boxes and quadrangles, which is laborious and expensive. Although synthetic data is easier to acquire, the model trained on this data has large performance gap with that trained on real data because of domain shift. To address this problem, we propose a novel two-stage framework for cost-efficient scene text detection. Specifically, in order to unleash the power of synthetic data, we design an unsupervised domain adaptation scheme consisting of Entropy-aware Global Transfer (EGT) and Text Region Transfer (TRT) to pre-train the model. Furthermore, we utilize minimal actively annotated and enhanced pseudo labeled real samples to fine-tune the model, aiming at saving the annotation cost. In this framework, both the diversity of the synthetic data and the reality of the unlabeled real data are fully exploited. Extensive experiments on various benchmarks show that the proposed framework significantly outperforms the baseline, and achieves desirable performance with even a few labeled real datasets.

A Cost-Efficient Framework for Scene Text Detection in the Wild

We present a method for exploiting weakly annotated images to improve text extraction pipelines. The approach uses an arbitrary end-to-end text recognition system to obtain text region proposals and their, possibly erroneous, transcriptions. The proposed method includes matching of imprecise transcription to weak annotations and edit distance guided neighbourhood search. It produces nearly error-free, localised instances of scene text, which we treat as "pseudo ground truth" (PGT). 
We apply the method to two weakly-annotated datasets. Training with the extracted PGT consistently improves the accuracy of a state of the art recognition model, by 3.7~\% on average, across different benchmark datasets (image domains) and 24.5~\% on one of the weakly annotated datasets.

Text Recognition -- Real World Data and Where to Find Them

Building a robust text detector suitable for different kinds of scene images is a challenging task because the performance of the text detector will be degraded due to the domain shift between different scenes. In this paper, we propose a cross-domain scene text detection method, consisting of pixel-level domain adaptation component (PDA) and image-level domain adaptation component (IDA), to enhance the robustness of scene text detection cross domains. We implement the PDA and IDA by a Gradient Reverse Layer (GRL) and a domain classifier that can distinguish the input scene comes from the source domain or target domain. Besides, to encourage the model to extract domain-invariant features, we introduce the adversarial training to the GRL block. Thus the detector trained with source data can produce more generalized results on the target domain. Experimental results on two pairs of datasets, including MTWI2018 and MSRA-TD500, ICDAR2015 and ICDAR2013, indicate that our proposed method is effective in cross-domain scene text detection and outperforms the methods without domain adaptation.
