Super thermal insulation materials with low thermal conductivities, such as aerogels and vacuum insulation panels, are increasingly pushing conventional thermal insulations out of the market. Super insulation materials such as aerogels can be used easily on both vehicles and buildings. Nowadays, their usage by pipes transporting hot medium is also widespread. In these environments where elevated temperatures (100–250 °C) are applied, it is a basic requirement that they should keep their excellent thermal insulating capability. In this study, a comprehensive examination performed on two new silica-aerogel type insulations is presented. We investigated the change in the thermal performance of different types of aerogel insulations (Slentex and Pyrogel) after thermal annealing, ageing them at 150 and 250 °C temperatures for 1 day. After these thermal treatments, their thermal parameters such as thermal conductivities and specific heat capacities were measured. We revealed that both the thermal conductivity and the specific heat capacity for the Pyrogel changed considerably after annealing, while for Slentex the thermal conductivity remained constant and the specific heat capacity changed. To understand these changes we executed calorimetry tests and microscopic inspections with different methods. These experiments were completed with X-ray diffractometry to analyze the possible structural changes in the samples. From an application point of view, we consider the importance of these results, since they predict the lifetime of the used insulating material during their industrial use. 

Thermal stability investigations of different aerogel insulation materials at elevated temperature

In recent years, energy conservation became a strategic goal to preserve the environment, foster sustainability, and preserve valuable natural resources. The building sector is considered one of the largest energy consumers globally. Therefore, insulation plays a vital role in mitigating the energy consumption of the building sector. This study provides an overview of various organic and inorganic insulation materials, recent trends in insulation systems, and their applications, advantages, and disadvantages, particularly those suitable for extreme climates. Moreover, natural and composite materials that can be used as a low-cost, thermally efficient, and sustainable option for thermal insulation are discussed along with their thermal properties-associated problems, and potential solutions that could be adopted to utilize natural and sustainable options. Finally, the paper highlights factors affecting thermal performance and essential considerations for choosing a particular insulation system for a particular region. It is concluded that the most commonly used insulation materials are found to have several associated problems and there is a strong need to utilize sustainable materials along with advanced materials such as aerogels to develop novel composite insulation materials to overcome these deficiencies. 

A Comprehensive Review and Recent Trends in Thermal Insulation Materials for Energy Conservation in Buildings

Fiber-reinforced silica aerogel blankets (FRABs) are an important high-temperature thermal insulation material for industry applications that have emerged in recent years. In order to better understand the performance evolution of FRABs at high temperatures, the effect of heat treatment at different temperatures on the performance of FRABs as well as their base material, hydrophobic silica aerogel powder and glass wool, was investigated. The property evolution of the hydrophobic silica aerogel powder showed two stages with an increase in thermal treatment temperatures. The skeleton structure of the aerogel remained unchanged, but the residual organic chemicals, such as hydrophobic groups, were decomposed when the heat treatment temperature was lower than 400 °C. Above 400 °C, the skeleton began to shrink with the increase in temperature, which led to an increase in thermal conductivity. The structure and room-temperature thermal conductivity of the glass wool blanket were less affected by a heat treatment temperature under 600 °C. Therefore, the performance degradation of FRABs at high temperatures is mainly due to the change in the aerogel powder. The insulation performance of the glass wool and FRAB at high temperatures was studied using a heating table which was designed to simulate working conditions. The energy savings of using FRABs instead of glass fiber were calculated and are discussed here.

The Evolution of Insulation Performance of Fiber-Reinforced Silica Aerogel after High-Temperature Treatment

Microphase separation regulation of polyurethane modified phenolic resin aerogel to enhance mechanical properties and thermal insulation

Silicon-based ceramic aerogels obtained by the polymer pyrolysis route possess excellent thermophysical properties, but their poor mechanical properties limit their broader applicability in thermal insulation materials. Herein, SiCN(O) ceramic aerogels were prepared under the toughening effect of a crosslinker (hexamethylene diisocyanate, HDI), which maintains the structural integrity of the aerogel during the wet gel-to-aerogel conversion. The aerogel maintained a high surface area (88.6 m2 g−1) and large pore volume (0.21 cm3 g−1) after pyrolysis. Based on this, mullite-fiber-reinforced SiCN(O) aerogels composites with outstanding thermal insulation properties and better mechanical performance were synthesized via ambient pressure impregnation. Furthermore, the effect of the impregnation concentration on the mechanical and insulation properties of the composites was investigated. The results revealed that the composite prepared with a solution ratio of 95 wt.% exhibited a low density (0.11 g cm−3) and a low thermal conductivity (0.035 W m−1 K−1), indicating an ~30% enhancement in its thermal insulation performance compared to the mullite fiber; the mesoporous aerogel structures wrapped on the mullite fibers inhibited the gas thermal conduction inside the composites.

Fabrication of SiCN(O) Aerogel Composites with Low Thermal Conductivity by Wrapping Mesoporous Aerogel Structures over Mullite Fibers

This paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies to determine the optimal thickness of thermal insulation from basalt fiber and aerogel products for pipelines at temperatures of 300 and 600 °C. We carried out a comparison of the key thermophysical characteristics of the claimed heat-insulating materials. We performed a thermal imaging survey of the furnace chimney, insulated with basalt fiber and aerogel, while controlling the temperature of the flue gases by establishing the required ratio of the flow rate of natural gas and oxidizer. The temperature gradient along the thickness of the thermal insulation was obtained using a numerical tool developed in ANSYS. The results show that aerogel surpasses basalt fiber in all key thermophysical characteristics. At the same time, the only barrier to widespread industrial production and use of aerogel in the high-temperature thermal insulation segment is its market cost, which is still several times higher than that of basalt fiber in terms of an equivalent performance.

Aerogel Product Applications for High-Temperature Thermal Insulation

Growing empirical evidence shows that ensemble information (e.g., the average feature or feature variance of a set of objects) affects visual working memory for individual items. Recently, Harrison, McMaster, and Bays (2021) used a change detection task to test whether observers explicitly rely on ensemble representations to improve their memory for individual objects. They found that sensitivity to simultaneous changes in all memorized items (which also globally changed set summary statistics) rarely exceeded a level predicted by the so-called optimal summation model within the signal-detection framework. This model implies simple integration of evidence for change from all individual items and no additional evidence coming from ensemble. Here, we argue that performance at the level of optimal summation does not rule out the use of ensemble information. First, in two experiments, we show that, even if evidence from only one item is available at test, the statistics of the whole memory set affect performance. Second, we argue that optimal summation itself can be conceptually interpreted as one of the strategies of holistic, ensemble-based decision. We also redefine the reference level for the item-based strategy as the so-called "minimum rule," which predicts performance far below the optimum. We found that that both our and Harrison et al. (2021)'s observers consistently outperformed this level. We conclude that observers can rely on ensemble information when performing visual change detection. Overall, our work clarifies and refines the use of signal-detection analysis in measuring and modeling working memory.
