How to develop usability heuristics

Building on the momentum of Industry 4.0 developments in production and manufacturing, the tourism-specific concept of Tourism 4.0 currently fuels visions of similar technology-based transformations towards highly interconnected and phygital systems in the tourism industry. There is an implicit assumption that the technological innovations of Tourism 4.0 work better for the benefits of tourists. However, even marvels of tourism information technology often come with a serious lack of human-centered design. The unprecedented speed of development and implementation of Tourism 4.0 technology further adds to this neglect. In addition, traditional approaches to designing the user experience of interactive systems are now seriously challenged by the disruption of traditional views on the goals of system use, more complex user roles, and the dynamic and hybrid context of the use. The powerful capabilities of Tourism 4.0 technologies allow for the enhancement of interaction with a system and enrichment of the tourist experience itself, providing new ways of assisting in behavior change and even in the long-lasting transformation of the users. However, this also means greater potential for harm. This viewpoint conceptualizes three different effects of interactive system use on technology-mediated tourist experiences—besides goal achievement that impacts satisfaction, effects can be goal-limiting (ranging from distracting to damaging) or goal-surpassing (ranging from enhancing to transforming). This conceptualization is then used to frame the importance of human-centered design for emerging Tourism 4.0 technologies.

Experimental validation of a set of cultural-oriented usability heuristics

Human-Computer Interaction HCI should be a basic part of the formative process of all Computer Science CS professionals. Usability and User Experience UX were redefined by many authors and well recognized standards. UX is usually considered as an extension of usability. To move from usability to UX seems to be a tendency lately. The lack of generally agreed formal definitions of HCI/usability/UX may have consequences on their development and recognition among CS communities, especially in regions where HCI is poorly developed, as Latin America. Practical activities are fundamental in complementing the theoretical foundations of HCI/usability/UX. The practice is usually more appealing and persuasive than the theory. The gap between HCI/usability/UX research and practice may be reduced by applied research, problem-oriented, or at least based on real case studies.

Usability research in educational technology: a state-of-the-art systematic review

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tend to enjoy themselves and be engaged when interacting with computers, as these interactions occur in a safe and trustworthy environment. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review on the state of the research on the use of technology to teach people with ASD. We reviewed 94 studies that show how the use of technology in educational contexts helps people with ASD develop several skills, how these approaches consider aspects of user experience, usability and accessibility, and how game elements are used to enrich learning environments. This systematic literature review shows that the development and evaluation of systems and applications for users with ASD is very promising. The use of technological advancements such as virtual agents, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality undoubtedly provides a comfortable environment that promotes constant learning for people with ASD.

The Impact of Technology on People with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Literature Review.

There are multiple methods that permit measuring a software product's degree of usability. Heuristic evaluation is an inspection method widely used, since it allows finding many usability problems. Transactional websites have their own defining features, therefore general heuristics may not be appropriate when evaluating their usability. A set of usability heuristics has been developed for transactional applications. The paper presents its refinement, based on experimental validation.

Redefining Usability Heuristics for Transactional Web Applications

User eXperience (UX) and Usability are key concepts in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Customer eXperience (CX) is traditionally related to Service Science, but lately becomes a relevant topic in HCI. It offers a more comprehensive approach to the user as customer of several products, systems or services that a company offers. We focused for years our research on tourist as user of dedicated software systems and digital products. We are now focusing on tourist as customer, involving not only interactive software systems, but also the whole range of products and services that she or he interacts with. The paper examines CX as an extension of UX, and as a bridge between HCI and Service Science, focusing on tourist as customer.

Customer eXperience: A Bridge Between Service Science and Human-Computer Interaction

There are many methods to assess the usability of interactive software systems. The Heuristic evaluation is one of the methods that allow finding many usability issues, based on a set of usability principles (heuristics). However, sets of generic usability heuristics may miss domain ‑ related usability aspects. Particularly, transactional web sites have specific features which could potentially not be considered when using generic heuristics. We developed a set of usability heuristics for transactional websites, using the methodology proposed by Rusu et al. (2011). The set of heuristics was designed, validated and refined during three iterations; experimental validation indicates that it is an effective and efficient evaluation instrument. The methodology facilitated the heuristics' design and specification. However, certain deficiencies were detected when applying it, so further improvements are necessary.

Developing Usability Heuristics: A Formal or Informal Process?

"Abilities" and "Xperiences" are well-known and intensely scrutinized in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). A lot of work was done and published on Usability and User experience (UX). Both concepts are still evolving, and other related concepts arise. Customer experience (CX) is relatively new in HCI; traditionally, CX is more related to the Service Science field. There is no generally agreed definition on CX. The paper expresses our (subjective) point of view on CX, its relationship with UX/Usability, and its relevance for HCI.
