We report a patient with a de novo interstitial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 2 (p23p25). The patient had microcephaly with prominent forehead and occiput, narrow rectangular face, clinodactyly, failure to thrive, delayed psychomotor development, and seizures. Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein was undetectable at 18 weeks of gestation. Heterozygosity at the red cell acid phosphatase locus (SRO-2p25) and normal levels of red cell malate dehydrogenase (SRO-2p23) are findings consistent with the presence of genetic material from bands 2p25 and 2p23.

We report a case of a boy with a de novo interstitial deletion of chromosome (2) (p11.2p13). Clinical features included dysmorphism of the face, genital region, and limbs, psychomotor retardation, and vitiligo. A reduced ratio of immunoglobulin (Ig) light chain expression (kappa/lambda ratio: 0.7) was found, compatible with deletion of one Ig kappa allele on chromosome 2p12. The patient had no clinical or laboratory signs of immunodeficiency.

A rare vascular portohepatic anomaly was identified in a Down syndrome patient with a 47,XY,−2,+der(2), + der(21)t(2;21)(p13;q22.1) mat chromosomal complement. This vascular defect involves a direct communication between the right portal vein and the inferior vena cava (IVC). We discuss the possibility that this vascular defect is a rare manifestation in Down syndrome. Alternatively, the existence of these 2 rare events in the same patient raises the possibility that they are causally related. © Wiley-Liss, Inc.

We report on a case of synophthalmic cyclopia and alobar holoprosencephaly associated with an interstitial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 2: del(2)(p21p23). This is the second case with this phenotype in association with deletion in this region, and comparison with the infrequent other cases of 2p deletions suggests a causal relationship between band 2p21 and cyclopia.

The case of a young man with del(2) (p11.2p13) is reported. Accounts of previous cases of deletion of the short arm of chromosome 2 are reviewed. Common features include mental retardation, proportional short stature and weight, dysmorphic facial features (a prominent nose, abnormal ears), and abnormal hands. Growth and developmental delay are present during the postnatal period.
