Important requirements for automotive radar are high resolution, low hardware cost, and small size. Multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) radar technology has been receiving considerable attention from automotive radar manufacturers because it can achieve a high angular resolution with relatively small numbers of antennas. For that ability, it has been exploited in the current-generation automotive radar for advanced driverassistance systems (ADAS) as well as in next-generation highresolution imaging radar for autonomous driving. This article reviews MIMO radar basics, highlighting the features that make this technology a good fit for automotive radar and reviewing important theoretical results for increasing the angular resolution. The article also describes challenges arising during the application of existing MIMO radar theory to automotive radar that provide interesting problems for signal processing researchers.

MIMO Radar for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems and Autonomous Driving: Advantages and Challenges

As the only method for all-weather, all-time and long-distance target detection and recognition, radar has been intensively studied since it was invented, and is considered as an essential sensor for future intelligent society. In the past few decades, great efforts were devoted to improving radar's functionality, precision, and response time, of which the key is to generate, control and process a wideband signal with high speed. Thanks to the broad bandwidth, flat response, low loss transmission, multidimensional multiplexing, ultrafast analog signal processing and electromagnetic interference immunity provided by modern photonics, implementation of the radar in the optical domain can achieve better performance in terms of resolution, coverage, and speed which would be difficult (if not impossible) to implement using traditional, even state-of-the-art electronics. In this tutorial, we overview the distinct features of microwave photonics and some key microwave photonic technologies that are currently known to be attractive for radars. System architectures and their performance that may interest the radar society are emphasized. Emerging technologies in this area and possible future research directions are discussed.

Microwave Photonic Radars

W-band inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging systems are very useful for automatic target recognition and classification due to their high spatial resolution, high penetration and small antenna size. Broadband linear frequency modulated wave (LFMW) is usually applied to this system for its de-chirping characteristic. However, nearly all of the LFMW generated in electronic W-band ISAR system are based on multipliers and mixers, suffering seriously from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and timing jitter. And photonic-assisted LFMW generator reported before is always limited by bandwidth or time aperture. In this paper, for the first time, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-resolution W-band ISAR imaging system utilizing a novel logic-operation-based photonic digital-to-analog converter (LOPDAC). The equivalent sampling rate of the LOPDAC is twice as large as the rate of the digital driving signal. Thus, a broadband LFMW with a large time aperture can be generated by the LOPDAC. This LFMW is up-converted to W band with an optical frequency comb. After photonic-assisted de-chirping processing and data processing to the echo, a high-resolution two-dimension image can be obtained. Experimentally, W-band radar with a time-bandwidth product (TBWP) as large as 79200 (bandwidth 8 GHz; temporal duration 9.9 us) is established and investigated. Results show that the two-dimension (range and cross-range) imaging resolution is ~1.9 cm × ~1.6 cm with a sampling rate of 100 MSa/s in the receiver.

High-resolution W-band ISAR imaging system utilizing a logic-operation-based photonic digital-to-analog converter.

We present an air-coupled ultrasonic imaging system based on a 40-kHz $8\times 8$ phased-array for 3-D real-time localization of multiple objects in the far-field By attaching a waveguide to the array, the effective interelement spacing is reduced to half wavelength This enables grating lobe-free transmit and receive beamforming with a uniform rectangular array of efficient low-cost transducers The system further includes custom transceiver electronics, an field programmable gate array (FPGA) system-on-chip and a PC for GPU accelerated frequency domain signal processing, consisting of matched filtering, conventional beamforming, and envelope extraction using Nvidia Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) and OpenGL for visualization The uniform rectangular layout allows utilizing multiple transmit and receive methods, known from medical imaging applications Thus, the system is dynamically adaptable to maximize the frame rate or detection range One implemented method demonstrates the real-time capability by transmitting a hemispherical pulse (HP) with a single transducer to irradiate the surroundings simultaneously, whereas all transducers are used for echo reception The imaging properties, such as axial and lateral resolution, field of view and range of view, are characterized in an anechoic chamber The object localization is validated for a horizontal and vertical field of view of ±80° and a range of view of 05–3 m with 29 frames/s Using the same system, a comparison between the HP method and the dynamic transmit beamforming method, which transmits multiple sequential beamformed pulses for long-range localization, is provided

Real-Time 3-D Imaging Using an Air-Coupled Ultrasonic Phased-Array

A high-resolution frequency-modulated continuous wave imaging radar for short-range applications is presented. A range resolution of about 1 cm is achieved with a bandwidth of up to 16 GHz around 160 GHz. In order to overcome losses and large tolerances on a printed circuit board (PCB), eight coherently coupled monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) are used, each with one transmit and receive antenna on-chip and each representing a single-channel radar system. The signals on the PCB are below 12 GHz, which facilitates fabrication and enables a design with low-cost substrates. The MMIC comprises a phase noise (PN)-optimized architecture with a fully integrated on-chip frequency synthesizer. Due to partly uncorrelated PN between the frequency synthesizer components, the noise level is increased in bistatic radar measurements between two different MMICs, which is explained by a thorough PN analysis. Time-division multiplexing is used to realize a multiple-input multiple-output system with a virtual array of 64 elements and an angular resolution better than 1.5° for the designed array. The positioning tolerances of the MMICs are included into the design resulting in a robust array design. The high-resolution radar performance is proven by imaging radar measurements of two exemplary scenarios.

High-Resolution 160-GHz Imaging MIMO Radar Using MMICs With On-Chip Frequency Synthesizers

In this paper, a radar demonstrator system with real-time capability operating at ${W}$ -band is presented. It operates at 90–100 GHz and provides 3-D information about the illuminated scene. The system uses frequency modulated continuous wave signals to extract range information whereupon long-range applications are aimed at. It consists of a sparse array of 22 transmitting and 22 receiving antennas and makes use of the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) principle. A back-propagation algorithm provides cross-range information. With the help of simulations and a simulated annealing algorithm, the geometry of the sparse array is optimized to meet application requirements using the available hardware. In this paper, the demonstrator system is described and the imaging theory is shortly reviewed. Measurements are presented to verify simulation results as well as 3-D imaging and long-range capability.
