[Purpose] The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a biteplate on the cranio-cervical posture of children with bruxism. [Subjects and Methods] Twelve male and female children aged six to 10 years with a diagnosis of bruxism participated in this study. The children used a biteplate during sleep for 30 days and were submitted to three postural evaluations: initial, immediately following placement of the biteplate, and at the end of treatment. Posture analysis was performed with the aid of the Alcimagem(®) 2.1 program. Data analysis (IBM SPSS Statistics 2.0) involved descriptive statistics and the Student's t-test. [Results] A statistically significant difference was found between the initial cranio-cervical angle and the angle immediately following placement of the biteplate. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the initial angle and the angle after one month of biteplate usage. [Conclusion] No significant change in the cranio-cervical posture of the children was found one month of biteplate usage. However, a reduction occurred in the cranio-cervical angle when the biteplate was in position.

Objetivo: avaliar a condicao dentaria e a dimensao vertical em pacientes portadores de DTM, bem como a idade e origem da DTM Metodologia: realizou-se um estudo descritivo, observacional de corte transversal, com uma amostra de trinta pacientes com DTM, diagnosticado pelo Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) Esta amostra foi determinada atraves de estimativas de atendimento, desta forma, uma amostra de conveniencia A associacao entre o genero, idade, dimensao vertical e condicao dentaria com DTM foram verificadas atraves do teste estatistico qui-quadrado, com intervalos de confianca de 95% Resultados: constatou-se que 26 pacientes eram do sexo feminino e 4 do sexo masculino Quinze sujeitos apresentaram idade inferior a 36,5 anos Quanto a origem da DTM, 19 sujeitos tinham desordem articular, e 11 muscular Determinou-se que nao houve associacao estatisticamente significante entre as variaveis independentes com a DTM Conclusao: os fatores etiologicos analisados isoladamente parecem nao influenciam de forma unica no desenvolvimento da DTM, mas poderao atuar em conjunto com outros fatores, ja que a sua causa e multifatorial

Condição dentária de pacientes com disfunção temporomandibular

Objetivo: Este trabalho tratou sobre a avaliacao da presenca de Disfuncao Temporomandibular (DTM) em pacientes portadores de protese total superior com reducao de Dimensao Vertical de Oclusao (DVO). A DTM abrange muitos problemas clinicos na regiao orofacial, tais como, dor, ruidos articulares, fadiga, bruxismo e zumbidos. Diversos sao os fatores predisponentes e perpetuantes da DTM, sendo que as consideracoes anatomicas, que envolvem as discrepâncias inter-arcos e relacoes oclusais sao as que podem se relacionar mais diretamente a protese total e em consequencia a esta pesquisa. Metodologia: Para a avaliacao da presenca de DTM, foi utilizado o questionario de Fonseca (1992) e para determinacao da perda de DVO os testes metricos e foneticos. Resultados e Conclusoes: a amostra constituiu-se de 20 pacientes, apos a coleta dos dados e analise dos resultados, a prevalencia obtida em relacao ao indice de DTM foi: pacientes com indice ausente 20%, indice leve 40%, indice moderado 25%, indice severo 15%, sendo que a somatoria destes dois ultimos sao aqueles considerados portadores de DTM, ou seja, a prevalencia de DTM nesta populacao foi de 40%.

Evaluation of vertical facial height reduction and severity of temporomandibular joint disorders using Shimbashi number and cephalometric analysis.

Purpose: to establish the relationship between the presence of temporomandibular disorders and variability of vertical dimension of occlusion aged between 7 and 12 years. Methods: it was analyzed 96 children and adolescents of Rogacionista Institute in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The diagnostic investigation of temporomandibular disorders was through Helkimo index and subsequent clinical examination. To measure the data on the vertical dimension were employed distances labial - corner of his eye and nose base - ment. To compare the mean values of anthropometric measurements between genders and the groups with and without TMD, we used analysis of variance (ANOVA) complemented by least significance diference test. Results: the vertical dimension of occlusion showed distinct measures in children and adolescents in all age groups studied, significant changes were observed for this measure at ages 10 and 12 years of both genders. Conclusion : we can conclude that in this sample there was a direct relationship between TMD and DVO, positive correlation between the measures lip commissure – corner of eye and nasium - mentum in females and significant changes in the vertical dimension of occlusion at the ages of 10 and 12 years for both sexes.
