Introduction to Computational Optimization Models for Production Planning in a Supply Chain

In variant design, the proliferation of bills of materials makes it difficult for designers to find previous designs that would aid in completing a new design task. This research presents a novel, data mining approach to forming generic bills of materials (GBOMs), entities that represent the different variants in a product family and facilitate the search for similar designs and configuration of new variants. The technical difficulties include: i) developing families or categories for products, assemblies, and component parts; ii) generalizing purchased parts and quantifying their similarity; iii) performing tree union; and iv) establishing design constraints. These challenges are met through data mining methods such as text and tree mining, a new tree union procedure, and embodying the GBOM and design constraints in constrained XML. The paper concludes with a case study, using data from a manufacturer of nurse call devices, and identifies a new research direction for data mining motivated by the domains of engineering design and information.

An approach for producibility and DFM-methodology in aerospace engine component development

In this paper, an attempt has been made to discuss the implications of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with the help of empirical research. The role of SMEs in a national economy has been emphasised all over the world, considering their contribution to the total manufacturing output and employment opportunities. SMEs are flexible and innovative, taking into account the size and business structure. Hence, there is potential to improve the overall performance of SMEs and their competitiveness. The physically distributed manufacturing environment of large-scale manufacturing industries emphasises the importance of SMEs. CIM has been successful in large-scale industries for improving productivity and quality, and hence competitiveness of manufacturing. However. CIM has received little attention from SMEs although it has an important role to play in improving the competitiveness of SMEs in a global market. Realising the potential of CIM in SMEs. an attempt has been made in this paper to study the potential of CIM with the help of a suitable model and an empirical analysis.

Implications of Computer-Integrated Manufacturing in Small and Medium Enterprises: An Empirical Investigation

This article presents the results of a research project on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) (Vliet 2001), carried out at Delft University of Technology from 1997 until 2001. The aim of the project was to enable effective application of the DFM concept during the entire design process, in order to help reduce design and manufacturing lead times and costs. A DFM methodology has been developed that can be used to support the designer to apply DFM. The methodology is based on the approaches of design coordination and continuous design evaluation. Both approaches have been implemented to provide an active form of design support during the entire design process. The methodology supports the principles of systematic design. To enable the designer to apply these principles effectively, two new design tools have been developed for, respectively, the product design specification stage and the conceptual design stage.
