Among artists, musicians suffer from special health problems related to their occupation and lifestyle. These mainly include musculoskeletal disorders, skin disorders, respiratory disorders, and noise induced hearing impairment. In this review we point out the most prevalent health problems that musicians face in their professional lives as well as the means to prevent them. The characteristics of individual performer and the type of instrument that he/she plays will determine the occupational disorder or disease that a musician may suffer from. The main worry about health problems in musicians is that they can become potentially career-ending disabilities. Therefore well-planned preventive strategies should be employed to help musicians in obtaining long and healthy career.

Health problems in musicians: A review

Custom mouthguards are used in various sports disciplines as a protection for teeth, temporomandibular joints, and soft tissues of the oral cavity from impact forces. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the mechanical properties of flexible polymeric 3D-printable materials and to select a material with the most favourable physical properties for making intraoral protectors. Four 3D-printable polymeric materials were selected for the evaluation: IMPRIMO LC IBT (Scheu-Dental, Iserlohn, Germany), Keyortho IBT (EnvisionTEC, Gladbeck, Germany), IBT (Formlabs, Somerville, MA, USA), and Ortho IBT (NextDent, Utrecht, Netherlands). A total of 176 samples (44 from each material) was 3D-printed using the stereolitography (SLA) technique. Tensile strength, flexural strength, notch-toughness, Shore hardness, sorption, and solubility tests were conducted. The materials were compared using a series of analyses of variance (one-way ANOVA) with Bonferroni post hoc tests. Statistical analyses were performed with the use of IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0.0 software (IBM, New York, NY, USA). Each material was assigned a score from 1 to 4 depending on the individual test results, and tests were given indexes according to the significance of the parameter in the mouthguard protective function. The number of points obtained by each material in each test was then multiplied by the test index, and the results were tabulated. The material with the highest result among the ones studied—most suitable for the application in mouthguard fabrication—was Keyortho IBT from EnvisionTEC.

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of 3D-Printed Polymeric Materials for Possible Application in Mouthguards

Background: During prosthodontic treatment, the averaged values of the transversal condylar inclination (TCI) and the sagittal condylar inclination (SCI) are used for articulator settings. This study evaluated different parameters of measurable mandibular movements according to skeletal classes. Methods: Seventy-five patients (mean age 30.8 ± 5.49) had a condylography using the Cadiax Compact device (Gamma Dental, Klosterneuburg, Austria) and cephalometric analysis performed. Statistical analysis was performed using R statistical software. Results: There was no statistical evidence to state that the value of SCI angle is different in I compared to II Skeletal Class. There were no statistically significant differences when comparing the I vs. III and II vs. III Skeletal Class. The lowest mean SCI angle values were found in subjects with Skeletal Class III. There were statistically significant differences in left-sided TCI between Class I and II. There was a statistically significant linear relationship between ANB angle value and SCI value. Conclusions: Due to the wide individual variation in SCI and TCI values, it is advisable to use individual measurable parameters of mandibular movements during prosthetic reconstructions. The statistically significant relationship between SCI and ANB angle can be used to individualize the articulating parameters, especially in significant skeletal disproportions.

Introduction: The aim of the study is to evaluate the marginal and internal fit of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) crowns using the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method and CAD/CAM milling. Materials and Methods: The research materials are abutment teeth and prosthetic crowns. The method is based on scanning the abutments and the interior of the substructures, creating their 3D models, using the program for comparison, and determining error maps of fitting crowns to the reference models, in the form of positive and negative deviations. Adding the deviations gives information about the tightness of the crowns. The Shapiro–Wilk test and the one-way ANOVA analysis were performed. The level of significance was p = 0.05. Results: The crowns made in SLM, a slightly better internal fit was found than for milled crowns, as well as a comparable marginal fit. The mean deviations for the sintering were the values [mm]: −0.039 and +0.107 for tooth 15 and −0.033 and +0.091 for tooth 36, and for the milling –0.048 and +0.110 for tooth 15 and –0.038 and +0.096 and for tooth 36. Conclusion: Based on the research conducted and the experience in therapeutic procedures, it can be indicated that the fitting of titanium alloy crowns in SLM and milling meets the clinical requirements. To evaluate the technology, a method was developed that determines the accuracy of mapping the shape of the tooth abutments in the crown substructures for the individual conditions of the patient.

The Impact of Sintering Technology and Milling Technology on Fitting Titanium Crowns to Abutment Teeth—In Vitro Studies

Disinfection of dental impressions is a compulsory procedure performed in order to break the chain of infection. Disinfectants used for this purpose are divided into two large groups. These are ready-to-use disinfectants applied directly over the surface of the impression in the form of a spray and concentrates, which are used to prepare a solution in which the impressions are immersed for a specific period of time. This study aims to evaluate the influence of disinfectants on spatial dimensions of alginate mass impressions.\nNinety cubic impressions were prepared using metal matrixes with external dimensions of\n28 x 28 mm. Each impression was measured in two planes. The impressions were divided into three equinumerous sets of 30: Group I was disinfected with Zeta 7 Spray (n = 30), Group II was disinfected with Zeta 7 Solution (n = 30), and the control Group III (n = 30). The dimensions of the samples were measured in two planes after 24 (T1) and 120 (T2) hours. The obtained data was analysed statistically.\nThe dimensions of the samples after 24 and 120 hours in the first group were significantly different from those of the control group and the differences were statistically significant\n(p <0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the second and the control group after 24 and 120 hours.\nReady-to-use disinfectants influence the dimensional stability of alginate-mass impressions. The time between taking the impression and preparation of the cast should be considered while choosing the disinfecting agent.\n\n

Rozwój technologii stosowanych w nowoczesnej protetyce stomatologicznej determinuje poszukiwanie możliwie jak największej dokładności i przewidywalności w odwzorowaniu pola protetycznego. W codziennej praktyce lekarza dentysty rzadko spotyka się laboratoria protetyczne przy gabinetach, co czyni zasadnym podjęcie próby ustalenia optymalnych warunków przechowywania wycisków wykonanych przy użyciu mas alginatowych. Cel pracy. Celem pracy było określenie wpływu warunków przechowywania wycisków wykonanych masą alginatową na ich wymiary przestrzenne. Materiał i metoda. Z tego powodu dentyści obserwują wzrastającą liczbą pacjentów doświadczających problemów w obrębie twarzoczaszki, powstałych w wyniku gry na instrumencie dętym. Poprzez profilaktykę i regularne wizyty u dentysty możliwe jest zapobieganie powyższym problemom zdrowotnym u muzyków. Cel pracy. Ocena poziomu świadomości stosowania ochraniaczy wewnątrzustnych wśród muzyków grających na instrumentach dętych oraz ocena częstości występowania uszkodzeń w obrębie zębów w grupie badanej. Materiał i metody. Przeprowadzono ankietę składającą się z 50 pytań, kierowaną do osób grających na instrumentach dętych poprzez tematyczne fora internetowe oraz grupy zainteresowań w Polsce i za granicą. Grupę badaną stanowiło 1067 osób w tym 370 kobiet (35%) i 697 mężczyzn (65%) w wieku od 10 do 80 lat. Mediana wieku wynosiła 23 lat. Streszczenie Charakterystyka pracy lekarza dentysty wymaga stosowania różnego rodzaju materiałów i narzędzi w jamie ustnej pacjenta. Z uwagi na brak całkowitej, mechanicznej bariery chroniącej dalsze odcinki układów oddechowego i pokarmowego, mogącymi zdarzyć się powikłaniami zabiegów stomatologicznych są aspiracje i połknięcia. Celowym jest ustalenie właściwego toku postępowania, diagnostyki i leczenia w takich sytuacjach zarówno na fotelu stomatologicznym, jak i w oddziałach specjalistycznych. Na podstawie opisywanych w piśmiennictwie przypadków można stwierdzić, że szczególnie predysponowane do przedostania się do drogi pokarmowej lub oddechowej są wiertła, narzędzia endodontyczne, uzupełnienia protetyczne, zwłaszcza na etapie kontroli w jamie ustnej przed zacementowaniem. Większość połkniętych przedmiotów transportowana jest przez przewód pokarmowy bez żadnych alarmujących dolegliwości. Jednak ostre, spiczaste i wydłużone przedmioty mogą spowodować perforację i uszkodzenia narządów wewnętrznych.
