A system for conducting performance analysis for executing tasks. The analysis involves generating a variety of trace information related to performance measures, including parallelism-related information, during execution of the task. In order to generate the trace information, target source code of interest is compiled in such a manner that executing the resulting executable code will generate execution trace information composed of a series of events. Each event stores trace information related to a variety of performance measures for the one or more processors and protection domains used. After the execution trace information has been generated, the system can use that trace information and a trace information description file to produce useful performance measure information. The trace information description file contains information that describes the types of execution events as well as the structure of the stored information. The system uses the trace information description file to organize the information in the trace information file, extracts a variety of types of performance measure information from the organized trace information, and formats the extracted information for display. The system can use default or user-defined functions to extract and format trace information for display. After the system displays one or more types of performance measure information, a user of the system can then interact with the system in a variety of ways to obtain other useful performance analysis information.

Parallelism performance analysis based on execution trace information

A system and method for providing a distributed debugger system for a distributed target computer application are disclosed wherein the programmer/developer of the application can be at one host machine and wherein the application being developed makes use of objects and object implementations which may be located on a different host machine which is unknown to the programmer/developer. The system and method provides solutions to problems which are encountered in trying to debug a new application which is associated with the use of objects in a widely distributed, object oriented, client-server system. In a distributed object environment, requests and replies are made through an Object Request Broker (ORB) that is aware of the locations and status of objects. One architecture which is suitable for implementing such an ORB is provided by the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) specification. The distributed debugger system disclosed herein is designed to function in a CORBA compliant distributed system.

System and method for a distributed debugger for debugging distributed application programs

The present invention provides a dynamic connection for distributed applications that need to locate application development tools, including but not limited to debuggers, trace collection tools, compilers, etc.) which may be running on different machines, and to send the tools messages. The program requesting debugging service (i.e., a debugger client) sends, to a tool locator, criteria which specifies the properties of a desired debugger. The tool locator maintains a registry of all tools, e.g. debuggers, and their properties, which remain active within the network by receiving tool registration information from each tool as it is started on any machine within the network. When a message is received by the tool locator from a debugger client specifying the criteria of a desired debugger, the tool locator searches its registry and returns a list of debuggers matching the specified properties along with a communication endpoint address that can be used to establish a connection with a debugger meeting the criteria. The debugger client then sends a message, using the established connection, to the desired debugger requesting debugging services on behalf of the debugger client or another program. As a result, a dynamic connection is made, at run time, between an application program and a debugger having certain desired properties wherein the debugger may be active, if at all, at any time on any machine within the network.

Dynamic connection to a remote tool in a distributed processing system environment used for debugging

The present invention provides a method, system, and program for debugging external programs, such as user-defined functions, stored procedures, and triggers executed in relational database management systems (RDBMS), in a client-server, i.e., distributed, environment. In the present invention, a debugger is initiated from within a process running the external program by executing a special segment of code prior to the execution of the external program. In one embodiment of the invention, this debugging function is triggered by including a variation of this special segment of program code within the external program, itself. In another embodiment of the invention, this debugging triggering function is provided within an enhanced RDBMS with extensions to SQL to activate the debugging ability in the RDBMS. The invention can be implemented by using present day serial debuggers or parallel and/or distributed debuggers. One such parallel and distributed debugger utilized in a preferred embodiment is the Parallel and Distributed Dynamic Analyzer (PDDA) debugger. In addition, although the following invention is described with reference to a debugger, the invention can be applicable for any application development tool.

System, method and program for debugging external programs in client/server-based relational database management systems

A system for debugging targets using various techniques, some of which are particularly useful in a multithread environment. These techniques include implementing breakpoints using out-of-line instruction emulation so that an instruction replaced with a breakpoint instruction does not need to be returned to its original location for single-step execution, executing a debugger nub for each target as part of the target task but using a nub task thread for the nub execution that is separate from the target task threads, providing immunity from breakpoints for specified threads such as the nub thread via specialized breakpoint handlers used by those threads, and virtualizing the debugger nub such that a shared root nub provides a uniform interface between the debugger and the target while specialized nubs provide differing functionality based on the type of target being debugged.

Debugging techniques in a multithreaded environment

A set of portable services for debugging computer software programs is disclosed. The services provide an object-oriented programming framework which is portable to various hardware and operating system platforms. The framework consists primarily of a debugger server and a debugger client. Multiple debugger clients, which target multiple processes executing on heterogeneous systems, can be used concurrently from a single high-level debugger process. Clients can processes locally and remotely. The client interface is portable to any platform that supports C++. A string class defines storage for variable length character strings.
