Causal Confusion and Reward Misidentification in Preference-Based Reward Learning
Jer Yi Tien,Jerry Zhi-Yang He,Zackory Erickson,Anca D. Dragan,Daniel S. Brown +4 more
- 13 Apr 2022
TL;DR: This article performed sensitivity and ablation analyses on several benchmark domains where rewards learned from preferences achieve minimal test error but fail to generalize to out-of-distribution states, resulting in poor policy performance when optimized.

SIRL: Similarity-based Implicit Representation Learning
Andreea Bobu,Yi Liu,Rohin Shah,Daniel S. Brown,Anca D. Dragan +4 more
- 02 Jan 2023
TL;DR: In contrastive learning as mentioned in this paper , the goal is to identify and isolate the causal features that people actually care about and use when they represent states and behaviors, and to learn representations that are more generalizable than self-supervised and task-input alternatives.
Monte Carlo Augmented Actor-Critic for Sparse Reward Deep Reinforcement Learning from Suboptimal Demonstrations
Albert Wilcox,Ashwin Balakrishna,Jules Dedieu,Wyame Benslimane,Daniel S. Brown,Ken Goldberg +5 more
- 14 Oct 2022
TL;DR: Monte Carlo augmented Actor-Critic (MCAC), a parameter free modification to standard actor-critic algorithms which initializes the replay buffer with demonstrations and computes a modi fied Q -value by taking the maximum of the standard temporal distance target and a Monte Carlo estimate of the reward-to-go.

A Study of Causal Confusion in Preference-Based Reward Learning
TL;DR: Evidence that learning rewards from pairwise trajectory preferences is highly sensitive and non-robust to spurious features and increasing model capacity, but not as sensitive to the type of training data is presented.

Abatement system having enhanced effluent scrub and moisture control
Phil Chandler,Daniel O. Clark,Frank F. Hooshdaran,Daniel S. Brown,Barry Page,Allen Fox,George L. Dansen,Jay J. Jung +7 more
- 06 Nov 2009
TL;DR: In this paper, an abatement system may include an exhaust conduit to flow an effluent stream therethrough, a plurality of packed beds disposed in the exhaust conduit, one or more spray jets to provide effluent treating agent between adjacent packed beds, and a dripper disposed above an uppermost packed bed to provide the treating agent in large droplets to wet and rinse particulate from an upper surface of the uppermost packing bed substantially without forming fine droplets.
