Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) is a freshwater mussel with physiological tolerance to different environmental conditions,
which may explain its success as an invasive species. The role of abiotic factors in its establishment, abundance and projections of
risk of further spread into several areas has been studied. These mussels may respond to multiple environmental stressors, such as
temperature, through physiological mechanisms, behavioral responses, mortality or some combination of these. The aim of this
study was to investigate the behavioral responses (valve closing), glycogen concentrations and mortality of L. fortunei under four
different temperatures (5°C, 10°C, 20°C and 30°C) during a chronic test (30 days). Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was
used to compare glycogen concentrations across days of the experiment and at the different temperatures. Differences in valveclosing
behavior and mortality among temperatures were tested using repeated-measures ANOVA. We observed that most of the
mussels maintained at 5°C closed their valves (74.7±15.3%), indicating that they remain inactive at low temperatures. The glycogen
levels significantly differed among the temperatures tested. These differences occurred mainly due to the high glycogen values
observed in mussels exposed to 10°C. Stability in glycogen concentrations was observed within each particular temperature. The
cumulative mortality was higher at extreme temperatures (5°C and 30°C). The ideal temperature for laboratory maintenance and
tests is approximately 20°C. Our data also show that L. fortunei can survive and maintain their energy reserves (glycogen) for
several days at 5°C, an important feature related to its invasion success.

What we know and don’t know about the invasive golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei

Abstract Limnoperna fortunei ( L. fortunei ) (Dunker, 1857), the golden mussel, is an invasive species possessing exceptional environmental adaptability and a destructive impact on water systems and artificial structures. To better conservation of freshwater ecosystems by controlling this mussel, it is essential to study its distribution, potential for invasion, environmental tolerance and biological traits. This paper outlines the distribution of L. fortunei in Asia and South America, as well as its potential for future invasion in freshwater habitats, along with the research methods employed. We find that the mussel had a temperature tolerance range of 8–35 °C and a pH range was 5–10, with some individuals surviving in extreme conditions for extended periods. We find that temperature was a decisive factor for success at reproductive stages, larval development and adult growth. The biological traits of L. fortunei are discussed, focusing on feeding habits, attachment characteristics and locomotion, with an emphasis on byssus structure, foot proteins and adhesion mechanisms. The study elucidates the impact of flow velocity, light exposure and substrate material on their attachment, with the optimal attachment being identified at a flow velocity of 0.3–0.9 m/s. Additionally, the mussel exhibits strong light avoidance performances and a preference for rough surfaces. Extensively‐researched control strategies are classified and summarized, primarily categorized into physical, chemical and biological control, with an outline of their respective strengths and limitations.

A novel multivariate ecological approach to modeling freshwater mussel habitats verified by ground truthing

A introducao de especies exoticas podem alterar irreversivelmente os ecossistemas naturais causando impactos irreversiveis nas comunidades biologicas, contribuindo para a extincao de especies nativas e alterando o funcionamento dos ecossistemas. Invasoes biologicas sao assim uma das grandes ameacas a biodiversidade no Brasil e em todo o mundo. A especie Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) conhecido popularmente como Mexilhao dourado, e uma especie de molusco bivalve originario da China e dos rios do sudeste asiatico.Inicialmente foi registrada na Argentina no estuario do rio La Plata, provavelmente por terem introduzidas pelas aguas de lastro dos navios, desde entao, a especie tem se dispersado ao longo da bacia do rio da Prata, ja tendo atingido a regiao pantaneira do Brasil. Em 2004, atingiu as cabeceiras do rio Parana no planalto central do Brasil. O objetivo deste trabalho foi contribuir com o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia capaz de mapear as areas favoraveis a acumulacao de larvas e testar um metodo com uso de ferramentas de geoprocessamento dando enfoque ao estudo da correlacao da energia fluvialdo rio com a distribuicao espacial das larvas de Mexilhao dourado. A area de estudo foi no rio Paranaiba, um dos formadores do importante rio Parana, onde foram amostrados um total de 22 estacoes abrangendo o trecho a jusante da UHE de Sao Simao no rio Paranaiba. Em campo foram realizadas as tomadas dos dados fisico-quimicos atraves de uma sonda multiparâmetros, e em laboratorio a identificacao dos estagios larvais e quantificacao. Foi utilizado no presente trabalho o indice Relacao Declividade ExtensaoRDE que e o gradiente hidraulico, a energia da corrente (stream power) e analisada a sua correlacao com a quantidade de larvas nas 22 estacoes amostradas. A media da densidade dos pontos amostrados foi de 55,3 ind/m3. Quando analisado todos os parâmetros (densidade, pH, condutividade e RDE), o resultado foi uma correlacao negativa que e estatisticamente significativa (Sperman rank correlation=-0,97) entre o RDE e densidade de larvas indicando que a medida que diminui o RDE aumenta o numero e densidade de concentracao de larvas. Este trabalho, usando metodos e tecnicas de geoprocessamento, permitiu identificar de uma forma inovadora uma relacao direta entre a velocidade de escoamento superficial das aguas com o padrao de distribuicao (numero e densidade de concentracao) das larvas de L. fortunei. Este resultado tem implicacoes importantes para a analise e modelagem de sistemas ambientais e tambem para a gestao da paisagem indicando que quanto maior a energia fluvial do rio, menor a densidade de larva encontrada. Este trabalho demonstra que a geomorfologia fluvial dos trechos deve ser considerada, como um fator importante na distribuicao e dispersao da especie uma vez que permite identificar que emareas com niveis mais baixos de energia, sao favoraveis ao estabelecimento e colonizacao do Mexilhao dourado demostrando que os esforcos de monitoramento devem privilegiar estas areas.

The introduction of the golden mussel, Limnoperna fortunei(Dunker, 1857) in South America was related to the discharge of ballast water, with its first record in 1991 in the La Plata River estuary. Since then, the species is spreading throughout the continent, with several economic and ecological negative consequences. Aim: To model, in the headwaters of Parana River, the spatial distribution ofL. fortunei and to understand the determinants of the current pattern of species distribution and the risk of invasion of areas not yet colonized. Methods: The ecological niche of L. fortunei was modeled using the algorithm MAXENT (Maximum Entropy Method) combined with records of occurrence of the bivalve, limnological data and the shear force measured by the index Hack (SL). The evaluation of the performance of different models was based on AUC (Area Under the Curve).The analysis of each variable's contribution to the responses of the models was made based on the Jackknife test, available in the Maxent program. The models were validated with real absence data collected between 2006 and 2007. Based on the limnological characterization of the area and on outputs of the models, this analysis sought to understand the contributing aspects to the current and potential spatial distribution and to verify the risk of invasion of environments not yet colonized by the species. Results/Conclusion: The limnological characterization showed that the ecological requirements for the species as, pH, calcium, oxygen and chlorophyll a, were appropriate in both the connected stretches, invaded and non-invaded. Turbidity showed significant spatial differences which proved to be higher in environments with higher levels of Hack (SL), i.e. higher energy fluvial. In addition, the algorithm showed the importance of hydrodynamical aspects expressed by Hack index (SL) to the spatial distribution of species, since the models with the best performances were those that considered the Hack index (SL) as one of the environmental layers of the mussel's niche. All models indicated a high risk of invasion into the reservoir of Sao Simao.
