Much has been published about developing a cybersecurity curriculum for institutes of higher learning (IHL). Now that a growing number of IHLs globally offer such programs, a need exists on how to guide, maintain, and improve the relevancy of existing curricula. Just as cybersecurity professionals must hone their skills continually to keep up with a constantly shifting threat landscape, cybersecurity programs need to evolve to ensure they continue to produce knowledgeable graduates. In this regard, professional certifications in the cybersecurity industry offer an opportunity for IHLs to maintain a current curriculum. Governing bodies that manage professional certifications are highly motivated to ensure their certifications maintain their currency in the competitive marketplace. Moreover, employers who hire security professionals look for certifications in assessing a candidate’s overall credentials. This paper attempts to fill a void in the literature by exploring the use of professional certifications as helpful input to shaping and maintaining a cybersecurity curriculum. To this end, we offer a literature analysis that shows how changes made to professional certifications are applicable and relevant to maintaining a cybersecurity curriculum. We then provide a case study involving an undergraduate cybersecurity program in a mid-sized university in the United States. Before concluding, we discuss topics such as experiential learning, cybersecurity capstone courses, and the limitations to our approach.

A Cyber Forensics Needs Analysis Survey: Revisiting the Domain's Needs a Decade Later

In his book Outliers, Malcom Gladwell describes the 10,000-Hour Rule, a key to success in any field, as simply a matter of practicing a specific task that can be accomplished with 20 hours of work a week for 10 years [10]. Ongoing changes in technology and national security needs require aspiring excellent cybersecurity professionals to set a goal of 10,000 hours of relevant, hands-on skill development. The education system today is ill prepared to meet the challenge of producing an adequate number of cybersecurity professionals, but programs that use competitions and learning environments that teach depth are filling this void.

The case for depth in cybersecurity education

With the projected higher demand for Network Systems Analysts and increasing computer crime, network security specialists are an organization’s first line of defense. The principle function of this paper is to provide the evolution of Collegiate Cyber Defense Competitions (CCDC), event planning required, soliciting sponsors, recruiting personnel for the operations, red, white and blue teams. Information on one school’s preparation will be provided with a review of what could have been improved to prepare their team for the competition.

Developing the Cyber Defenders of Tomorrow with Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competitions (CCDC).

Numerous cyber defense competitions exist today for individuals and teams to test their cyber security skills where each team has to “win or go home.” What is missing from these competitions is a league allowing head to head competitions over the course of a season, much like a sport. Teams playing several hours every week during a ten-week season have the opportunity to improve their cyber security skills. This paper provides an overview of cyber security competitions, and how a National Cyber League can greatly expand the number of and participants in these competitions at a much lower cost leveraging virtual technologies.

A League of Our Own: The Future of Cyber Defense Competitions

The subject of computer forensics is still new and both challenging and intriguing for students. Cal Poly Pomona has offered this course since September of 2004. The course involves both the technical and legal aspects of investigative procedures as applied to digital evidence. For the instructor, it can involve challenges not found in other areas of information systems. This paper discusses some of the triumphs and pitfalls of including computer forensics as part of an undergraduate information assurance curriculum.

In a time of global crisis in cybersecurity, competitions and related activities are rapidly emerging to provide fun and engaging ways of developing and assessing cybersecurity knowledge and skills. However, there is no neutral organization that brings them together to promote collective efforts and address common issues. This paper will describe the rationale and process for developing the Cybersecurity Competition Federation (CCF) (National Science Foundation Award DUE- 134536) which was created to facilitate a community that promotes cybersecurity competitions and related activities. CCF's vision is to maintain an engaged and thriving ecosystem of cybersecurity competitions and related activities to build career awareness and cybersecurity skill to address a global shortage of cybersecurity professionals.
