Seeing the rainbow: mechanisms underlying spectral sensitivity in teleost fishes.
Karen L. Carleton,Daniel Escobar-Camacho,Sara M. Stieb,Sara M. Stieb,Sara M. Stieb,Fabio Cortesi,N. Justin Marshall +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the structural and molecular mechanisms underlying the differences in the spectral sensitivity of different teleost groups of fishes have been determined. But this alone does not imply functional difference per se.
Diurnal variation in opsin expression and common housekeeping genes necessitates comprehensive normalization methods for quantitative real-time PCR analyses.
Miranda R. Yourick,Benjamin A. Sandkam,William J Gammerdinger,Daniel Escobar-Camacho,Sri Pratima Nandamuri,Frances E. Clark,Brendan Joyce,Matthew A. Conte,Thomas D. Kocher,Karen L. Carleton +9 more
TL;DR: How normalization affects a data set with fluctuating expression levels using qRT–PCR and transcriptome data from the retinae of the cichlid Pelmatolapia mariae is examined and recommendations for designing sampling approaches and quantification methods based upon the scientific question being examined are made.

Conservation threats and future prospects for the freshwater fishes of Ecuador: A hotspot of Neotropical fish diversity
Windsor E. Aguirre,Windsor E. Aguirre,Windsor E. Aguirre,Gabriela Alvarez‐Mieles,Fernando Anaguano-Yancha,Ricardo Burgos Morán,Roberto V. Cucalón,Daniel Escobar-Camacho,Ivan Vinicio Jacome-Negrete,Pedro Jorge Jiménez Prado,Pedro Jorge Jiménez Prado,Enrique Laaz,Katherin Miranda‐Troya,Ronald Navarrete-Amaya,Fredy Nugra Salazar,Willan Revelo,Juan Francisco Rivadeneira,Jonathan Valdiviezo Rivera,Edwin Zárate Hugo +18 more
TL;DR: In 2018-2019, the government of Ecuador sponsored a series of workshops to examine the conservation status of Ecuador's freshwater fishes as discussed by the authors, where concerns were identified for 35 species, most of which are native to the Amazon region and overfishing of Amazonian pimelodid catfishes emerged as a major issue.

Sensory modalities in cichlid fish behavior
TL;DR: Research on cichlid sensory capabilities and behaviors incorporates integrative approaches and relies on diverse scientific disciplines from physics to chemistry to neurobiology to understand the evolution of the cichLid sensory systems.

Visual pigment evolution in Characiformes: the dynamic interplay of teleost whole‐genome duplication, surviving opsins and spectral tuning
TL;DR: This study showcases the visual system evolution of neotropical Characiformes and the spectral tuning mechanisms they exhibit to modulate their visual sensitivities and found interspecific and intraspecific variation in A1/A2‐chromophores proportions, correlating with the light environment.
