Since 2007 the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has funded the Student Aptitude Test for Tertiary Admission (SATTA) pilot program. SATTA involves the supply, management and evaluation of uniTEST, and the evaluation of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). This report documents the evaluation phase of the program, focusing in particular on various aspects of uniTEST. Seven recommendations are made. The evaluation was conducted between late 2007 and early 2010. The evaluation involved background planning and review, data specification and collection, psychometric and statistical analysis, wide-scale consultation, and documentation and reporting. Significant policy change is planned for Australian higher education over the next few years, with both government and institutions seeking new ways to make the system larger, more inclusive and more productive. In this context, it is vital to develop new transparent mechanisms for helping each student understand her or his potential and access the system. This report details how aptitude testing can play an important role.

Student Aptitude Test for Tertiary Admission (SATTA) Pilot Program: Evaluation Report for the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)

Admission to medical school is one of the most highly competitive entry points in higher education. Considerable investment is made by universities to develop selection processes that aim to identify the most appropriate candidates for their medical programs. This paper explores data from three undergraduate medical schools to offer a critical perspective of predictive validity in medical admissions. This study examined 650 undergraduate medical students from three Australian universities as they progressed through the initial years of medical school (accounting for approximately 25 per cent of all commencing undergraduate medical students in Australia in 2006 and 2007). Admissions criteria (aptitude test score based on UMAT, school result and interview score) were correlated with GPA over four years of study. Standard regression of each of the three admissions variables on GPA, for each institution at each year level was also conducted. Overall, the data found positive correlations between performance in medical school, school achievement and UMAT, but not interview. However, there were substantial differences between schools, across year levels, and within sections of UMAT exposed. Despite this, each admission variable was shown to add towards explaining course performance, net of other variables. The findings suggest the strength of multiple admissions tools in predicting outcomes of medical students. However, they also highlight the large differences in outcomes achieved by different schools, thus emphasising the pitfalls of generalising results from predictive validity studies without recognising the diverse ways in which they are designed and the variation in the institutional contexts in which they are administered. The assumption that high-positive correlations are desirable (or even expected) in these studies is also problematised.

According to Robinson, it is part of the verite aesthetic of a new film practice that emerged in response to the studio productions in the dogmatic-formula mode of the Mao period, and the post-Mao state media system. Xianchang, then, challenges studio-based film-making by shifting the emphasis to location-shooting in identifiable, actual places, the here-and-now of filmed subjects, the quality of accidentality, variability and, ultimately, the uncontrollability of what is to be represented. Robinson gradually refines his explication of xianchang as he explores various stages and modes of Chinese documentary practice as the production of a differentiated and yet cohesive body of cinema.Following the Introduction, where Robinson states his main thesis and its proposed elaboration, Chapter 1, "Mapping Independent Chinese Documentary", grants us an overview of the theorization of the "New Documentary Movement" in both China and the West. This includes generous acknowledgments of the investigative work that has already been done, while at the same justifying why Robinson has opted for the label "independent Chinese documentary" in contrast to the standard account, in which it is known as the "New Documentary Movement". This serves his aim of teasing out salient differences in the practices of independent documentary directors. Each of the following four chapters addresses a specific manifestation of xianchang as representation of the contingencies of the scene, its here-and-now, and the intensely personal, in contrast to the predilection of generalities favored by the state studio system. In arguing for this fundamental difference, Chapter 2, "Metaphor and Event", discusses the disparity between the public and private documentary, the former addressing such broad themes as the "greater social and political good", the latter preferring an introspective attention to "the fate of the individual". This, Robinson claims, constitutes a radical shift from earlier documentaries, not only in the sense that those collective concerns are now replaced by an emphasis on the individual, but also in that the celebration of the private no longer resonates with a socialist vocabulary characteristic of a specific, political culture. This shift leads him to ask whether "perhaps the genre is proof that a post-socialist Chinese interiority is coming to fruition" (p. 39). The chapter then turns to three detailed case studies demonstrating their common character of "preserving the open-endedness of the profilmic" and the "accidental, unexpected and uncontrollable" nature of documenting actual events by employing "visceral signifiers of material reality's unpredictability" (p. 67). There is a wide variety of universities, university campuses and university courses in Australia available to those interested in pursuing a higher education degree. This paper examines the impact of increasing competition for entrance to university on the educational outcomes for students from the government school sector. Using Melbourne as a case study, the research shows that, over a four-year period of increased competition, entry to some of the more academically accessible university campuses in the city became more difficult and this disproportionately affected the opportunities for university entrance among some groups. Despite the fact that there was no noticeable change in the academic standards achieved by government school completers, the rate at which government school students gained access to these universities declined noticeably during this time. These findings show how changes in supply of university places from year to year can have a profound effect on the opportunities of secondary-school completers - particularly those in more educationally disadvantaged settings.

Curriculum delivery in higher education is changing rapidly, notably in the area of online delivery. Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in Australia is no exception to this, and this article explores this growth with a particular focus on its implications for workforce planning for teachers. In this planning in Australia, ITE students are usually considered part of the ‘supply pipeline’ for the state in which their university is located. However, with online delivery, students could potentially be enrolled on the other side of the country (or the world) from the physical location of their institution. The data presented here show that of the growing cohort of external ITE graduates, a small but significant group resides outside of the state in which their institution of enrolment is located. This exploration of data highlights some new evidence which has consequences for teacher supply planning and offers insight to inform future teacher workforce projections.
