Provenance and Paleozoic tectonic evolution of Ganderia and its relationships with Avalonia and Megumia in the Appalachian-Caledonide orogen

Controls on chemical evolution and rare element enrichment in crystallising albite-spodumene pegmatite and wallrocks: Constraints from mineral chemistry

\n Compared to average crustal abundances, high field strength elements (HFSEs) including Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta, and U are commonly enriched in rare element pegmatites. Albite-spodumene pegmatites may show economic grades of these elements, along with Sn, primarily in oxide minerals. Processes leading to enrichment and precipitation of HFSEs in these rocks are not well understood. Here, we characterize the textures and geochemistry of minerals of HFSEs, tin, and base metals in the Leinster albite-spodumene pegmatites. We use these data to infer processes for enrichment and precipitation of these metals during pegmatite crystallization, especially subsolidus processes.\n The Leinster albite-spodumene pegmatites are located within the East Carlow deformation zone on the eastern flank of the Caledonian S-type Leinster batholith, southeast Ireland. The final crystallization stages of these pegmatites are characterized by autometasomatism and hydrothermal overprint leading to in situ greisenization and precipitation of massive, commonly replacive, albitites. Cassiterite and HFSE minerals (columbite-tantalite and zircon) crystallized predominantly during these late stages. Crystals of HFSE minerals that precipitated during the early magmatic stages commonly exhibit evidence of resorption and additional growth during later stages. Others, such as microlite and uraninite, only crystallized during metasomatism or from hydrothermal fluids. Base metal sulfides are among the last precipitates from these fluids.\n We present a detailed paragenetic sequence for the Leinster albite-spodumene pegmatites and show that late-stage aqueous fluids transported HFSEs, especially after all the melt had crystallized. Tantalum enrichment seems to have been controlled by processes affecting the entire crystallizing medium, as opposed to fractional crystallization of columbite-tantalite. The textures and parageneses described in the present and our previous work are well explained by element partitioning between coexisting liquids with characteristics similar to those described in published melt-melt-fluid immiscibility models for rare element pegmatites but do not exclude other models for early-stage pegmatite evolution. The chemical and textural features of columbite-tantalite and cassiterite in the Leinster albite-spodumene pegmatites are seen in similar rare element pegmatites and rare metal granites elsewhere, suggesting wide applicability of the processes interpreted for Leinster.\n Late-stage processes of the type that affected the lithium pegmatites at Leinster may either enhance or reduce economic potential: ore metal tenor may be increased because late-stage columbite-tantalite is generally richer in Ta, and/or ore metals may be lost from pegmatites to country rocks. Lithium pegmatites, including the ones at Leinster, are commonly associated spatially with Sn-W veins and greisens and share some geochemical and textural features, such as evidence of widespread albitization. We propose that lithium pegmatites are transitional products regarding the interrelated dimensions time, temperature, and depth in S-type granite-related Li-Sn-W mineralizing systems.

Metasomatic High Field Strength Element, Tin, and Base Metal Enrichment Processes in Lithium Pegmatites from Southeast Ireland

Irish-type deposits comprise carbonate-hosted sphalerite- and galena-rich lenses concentrated near normal faults. We present new data from the Tara Deep resource and overlying mineralization, at Navan, and the Island Pod deposit and associated Main zone orebodies, at Lisheen. Tara Deep mineralization predominantly replaces Tournasian micrites and subordinate Visean sedimentary breccias. The mineralization is mainly composed of sphalerite, galena, marcasite and pyrite. A range of Cu- and Sb-bearing minerals occur as minor phases. At Tara Deep, paragenetically early sulfides exhibit negative δ34S values, with later phases displaying positive δ34S values, indicating both bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) and hydrothermal sulfur sources, respectively. However, maximum δ34S values are heavier (25‰) than in the Main Navan orebody (17‰). These mineralogical and isotopic features suggest that Tara Deep represents near-feeder mineralization relative to the Navan Main orebody. The subeconomic mineralization hosted in the overlying Thin Bedded Unit (TBU) comprises sphalerite replacing framboidal pyrite, both exhibiting negative δ34S values (−37.4 to −8.3‰). These features indicate a BSR source of sulfur for TBU mineralization, which may represent seafloor exhalation of mineralizing fluids that formed the Tara Deep orebody. The Island Pod orebody, at Lisheen, shows a mineralogical paragenetic sequence and δ34S values broadly similar to other Lisheen orebodies. However, the lack of minor Cu, Ni, and Sb minerals suggests a setting more distal to hydrothermal metal feeder zones than the other Lisheen orebodies. Pb isotope data indicate a very homogeneous Lower Palaeozoic Pb source for all Navan orebodies. Lower Palaeozoic metal sources are also inferred for Lisheen, but with variations both within and between orebodies. Carbon and oxygen isotopic variations at Navan and Lisheen appear to result from fluid-carbonate rock buffering. The emerging spectrum of mineralogical and isotopic variations define proximal to distal characteristics of Irish-type systems and will assist in developing geochemical vectoring tools for exploration.

Coupling Mineralogy, Textures, Stable and Radiogenic Isotopes in Identifying Ore-Forming Processes in Irish-Type Carbonate-Hosted Zn–Pb Deposits

\n Deep crustal felsic xenoliths from classic Scottish Midland Valley localities, carried to the surface by Permo-Carboniferous magmatism, are shown for the first time to include metaigneous varieties with dioritic and tonalitic protoliths. Four hypotheses regarding their origin have been evaluated: (1) Precambrian basement; (2) Permo-Carboniferous underplating; (3) ‘Newer Granite’ magmatism; (4) Ordovician arc magmatism. U–Pb zircon dating results rule out the Precambrian basement and Permo-Carboniferous underplating hypotheses, but establish that the meta-igneous xenoliths represent both ‘Newer Granite’ and Ordovician (to possibly Silurian) arc magmatism. The metadiorite xenoliths are shown to have protolith ages of c. 415 Ma with εHft zircon values ranging from +0·1 to +11·1. These are interpreted to represent unexposed ‘Newer Granite’ plutons, based on age, mineralogical, isotopic and geochemical data. This shows that Devonian ‘Newer Granite’ magmatism had a greater impact on the Midland Valley and Southern Uplands crust than previously realized. Clinopyroxene–plagioclase–quartz barometry on the metadiorites from the east and west of the Midland Valley yielded a similar pressure range of c. 5–10 kbar, and a metadiorite from the east yielded a minimum two-feldspar temperature estimate of c. 793–816°C. These results indicate that the metadiorites once resided in the middle–lower crust. In contrast, two metatonalite xenoliths have a Late Ordovician protolith age (c. 453 Ma), with zircon εHft values of +7·8 to +9·0. These are interpreted as samples of a buried Late Ordovician magmatic arc situated within the Midland Valley. Inherited zircons with similar Late Ordovician ages and εHft=453 values (+1·6 to +10·8) are present in the metadiorites, suggesting that the Devonian ‘Newer Granites’ intruded within or through this Late Ordovician Midland Valley arc. A younger protolith age of c. 430 Ma from one of the metatonalites suggests that arc activity continued until Silurian times. This validates the long-standing ‘arc collision’ hypothesis for the development of the Caledonian Orogen. Based on U–Pb zircon dating, the metatonalite and metadiorite xenoliths have both experienced metamorphism between c. 400 and c. 391 Ma, probably linked to the Acadian Orogeny. An older phase of metamorphism at c. 411 Ma was possibly triggered by the combined effects of heating owing to the emplacement of the ‘Newer Granite’ plutons and the overthrusting of the Southern Uplands terrane onto the southern margin of the Midland Valley terrane.
