Adsorption of organic water pollutants by clays and clay minerals composites: A comprehensive review

The selective adsorption of certain dye components from mixed solutions may be desired for potential recovery and reuse. In this review, the recent works in this field have been compressively summarized. The dyes investigated in selective adsorption processes have been summarized, and the analysis methods as well as indexes for the evaluation of selective adsorption performances were discussed. After that, the recent works concerning selective adsorption were classified and discussed based on the different separation mechanisms, including charge-dependent separation, size-dependent separation, hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, proton migration, time-dependent separation, chemical precipitation, and hydrophobic interaction. Furthermore, the impacts of operational and environmental factors including the solution pH, inorganic salts, the initial dye concentration, the adsorption temperature, the adsorption time, and the concentration ratio of dye components on the selective adsorption performances as well as regeneration of the adsorbents were discussed. This review further highlights the current achievements and hurdles for selective dye adsorption process, and also proposes recommendations for future works, including more attention to effects of operational and environmental factors, more theoretical calculations as well as the development of low-cost adsorbents and new separation mechanisms. • Recent advances in selective adsorption of dyes were reviewed. • The methods and indexes to evaluate adsorption selectivity were summarized. • Various separation mechanisms to achieve selective adsorption were discussed. • The impacts of different factors on adsorption selectivity were summarized. • The challenges and recommendations for future works were proposed. 

A Review on Selective Dye Adsorption by Different Mechanisms

Contaminated water and scarcity of clean water are serious global environmental concerns. Elimination of hazardous organic/inorganic contaminants from water/sewages is essential and demands immediate attention in order to protect pure water resources. Adsorptive decontamination of aqueous pollutants is widely accepted technology owing to its simple handling, higher efficiency and economic viability. Functionalized natural polymeric materials such as cellulose, biomass, starch, proteins, and biochar have been considered as highly effective adsorbents for the elimination of aqueous pollutants, in particular heavy metal ions, textile dyes, pharmaceuticals and hazardous organic compounds. Biobased hydrogels fabricated via introduction of oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur comprising groups and inorganic fillers (graphene, clay, carbon nanotubes, etc.) are attractive materials owing to their distinctive physicochemical properties, cost-effectiveness, ease of fabrication and operation, large specific surface area and porosity, and easy reusability. Functional biobased hydrogels showed superior adsorption performance for cationic contaminants via electrostatic and hydrogen (H)-bonding interactions. This review summarizes state-of-the-art biobased hydrogels including their intrinsic properties, previous and recent advances and future tactics for their use in wastewater treatment applications. Fabrication methods and properties of modified biobased hydrogels and their adsorption characteristics are specially focused. Development of biobased hydrogels with desirable properties such as three-dimensional (3D) microstructure, high porosity and surface area and multifunctionality is a potential way to fulfill the expanding demands of wastewater treatment at an industrial scale. The current position of invention and utilization of biobased hydrogels in wastewater treatment is reviewed without ignoring iconic studies that have advanced this area of research to the current stage. Eventually, future perspectives for the development of advanced biobased hydrogels to overcome separation problems and move towards new technological aspects are also described.

Functional biobased hydrogels for the removal of aqueous hazardous pollutants: current status, challenges, and future perspectives

Montmorillonite clay/starch/CoFe2O4 nanocomposite as a superior functional material for uptake of cationic dye molecules from water and wastewater

Herein, we report a new metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite beads adsorbent made via incorporating UiO-66 MOF, carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) into sodium alginate for efficient removal of methylene blue dye, and Cu2+ ions. The successful fabrication of the synthesized UiO-66/GOCOOH@SA composite beads was confirmed by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis and BET measurement. The incorporation of both UiO-66 and GOCOOH into SA beads greatly increased their adsorption efficiency for the removal of both MB and Cu2+ with maximum adsorption capacities of 490.72 and 343.49 mg/g, respectively. The removal process of both MB and Cu2+ follows the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich isotherm model. A plausible adsorption mechanism was discussed in detail. Regeneration tests clarified that the removal efficiencies toward both MB and Cu2+ remained higher than 87% after five cycles. These results reveal the potentiality of UiO-66/GOCOOH@SA beads as an excellent adsorbent.
