ncluding a new preface by the author, Irish Migrants in the Canadas probes beyond the aggregate statistics of most studies of the migration process. Bruce Elliott traces the genealogies, movements, landholding strategies, and economic lives of 775 families of Irish immigrants who came to Canada between 1815 and 1855 from County Tipperary, Ireland. He follows his subjects not only from Ireland to Canada but in their subsequent movements within North America. His work has important implications for current discussions of nineteenth-century society in Ireland, Canada, and the United States.

Irish Migrants in the Canadas: A New Approach.

This dissertation examines how John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, and his wife, Elizabeth, manifested imperial expressions of power, sovereignty, security, and population within the new colony in the 1790s. There are also three chapters that focus on how territorial and route surveying played a critical role for both Simcoes, serving as a scientific foundation for reframing Upper Canada as a territory and a population. It does so by offering a re-examination of both their well-known private and public correspondence written in this decade, and also some select paintings and maps through which their ideas of governance and political and cultural visions were expressed. The dissertation's reading and contextualisation of this archive is informed by Michel Foucault's lectures on governmentality, critical cartographic histories, and imperial and colonial historiographies, all of which are brought into conversation with historical studies of Upper Canada.
There are two central arguments in this dissertation. First, it demonstrates the ways that the actions of both Simcoes were imperial in nature and were not directed towards the establishment of an independent Province. Towards this end, it reconsiders Elizabeth's collection of writings as evidence of the ways that she embodied and administered imperial interpretations of power and knowledge as a faithful observer and cataloguer of the colony through scientific methods including cartography. Second, this dissertations argues that the Simcoes' work in and about Upper Canada were expressions of an early modern imperial governmentality that predated and thus operated somewhat differently from the historiographically well-known liberal governmentality that emerged in Canada in the early-to-middle decades of the nineteenth century.

Recent Publications Relating to Canada

During the summer of 1847, hundreds of thousands of Irish migrants fleeing famine and social upheaval in their native land made their way to the bustling North Atlantic port cities of Montreal and Liverpool. Their migration was marked by outbreaks of epidemic disease that helped fuel public doubts about the project of liberal urban governance. The imperial, colonial and municipal authorities were forced to adopt innovative practices of authority in the midst of the ensuing crisis. This article explores the similarities between the response to these events in Montreal and Liverpool as well as the way that these responses were inextricably linked to local circumstances. In doing so, it examines the way that political practices were debated and implemented across the North Atlantic World in the middle of the nineteenth century. Durant l’ete de 1847, des centaines de milliers de migrants irlandais fuyant la famine et la tourmente sociale de leur terre natale ont gagne les villes portuaires grouillantes de vie de l’Atlantique Nord qu’etaient Montreal et Liverpool. Leur migration s’est accompagnee de flambees epidemiques qui ont exacerbe le doute qu’entretenait la population quant au projet de gouvernance urbaine liberale. Les autorites imperiales, coloniales et municipales furent contraintes d’adopter des pratiques novatrices d’exercice du pouvoir au plus fort de la crise qui s’ensuivit. Le present article explore les similitudes entre les reactions que susciterent ces evenements a Montreal et a Liverpool ainsi que les liens inextricables entre ces reactions et la conjoncture locale. "If the evil now growing around us be not staid": Montreal and Liverpool Confront the Irish Famine Migration as a Transnational Crisis in Urban Governance

The June 1853 appearance of Alessandro Gavazzi in Montreal provoked a violent sectarian riot that left 10 dead and many more wounded. The city’s French-Canadian and Irish elites were outraged that the charismatic anti-Catholic lecturer had been invited to the city by local Protestants. British Protestant elites, meanwhile, perceived the riot as an attack on free speech and on their vision of an orderly city. The debates that occurred in the aftermath of the riot provide a glimpse into the contested nature of identity in mid-nineteenth-century Montreal. Clashing conceptions of public decorum, urban space, and masculine and feminine respectability played a pivotal role in these discussions. French-Canadian, British Protestant, and Irish Catholic elites in the city negotiated the aftermath of the riot in ways that justified their competing claims to power and authority in a period of intense cultural and demographic change.

“Shame upon you as men!” Contesting Authority in the Aftermath of Montreal’s Gavazzi Riot

THE WEDNESDAY, October 10, 1838 issue of the Quebec Gazette included news from the United States, the West Indies, the Maritime colonies (known as the “Lower Provinces”), Upper Canada, and Great Britain. In addition to reporting on these locales – some further afar than others – the Gazette also reproduced state documents such as Proclamations, Ordinances, and Correspondence alongside Petitions, Addresses, and Replies that engaged and, in some instances, enraged colonists. A list of passengers identified by name those new to the colony and noted the arrival of the governor general’s “bearer of dispatches,” W. H. F. Cavendish. Advertisements filled nearly two pages, tempting colonists to loosen their purse strings to spend money on furs, farms, or pairs of rubber shoes from India.1 The local, colonial, imperial, and global news reported in just this single issue of the Quebec Gazette shares much with this themed section on British North America: both remind us that the history of British North America, and in particular Lower Canada, was part of a much larger international history.2 By reading publications like the Quebec Gazette – or hearing them read – the residents of British North America could keep abreast of European political events, follow the latest trends in art, fashion, and literature, and stay on top of both the major developments and daily minutiae of imperial and colonial governance. In this society, public life was increasingly defined by the circulation of people, capital, commodities, and ideas. Any suspicion that the people of British North America lived in quiet isolation from the debates and conflicts remaking the world around them can be vigorously tossed aside with a cursory glance at the Quebec Gazette.
