Polytetrafluoroethylene: Synthesis and Characterization of the Original Extreme Polymer

Foams have been widely used in oilfields for effective profile control and displacement. However, foams stabilized by surfactants lack long-term stability, especially in an oil reservoir. Here, we have studied the in situ modification of positively charged AlOOH nanoparticles via the adsorption of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the characterization of foam stabilized by AlOOH nanoparticles in synergy with SDS under different conditions. Changes in the zeta potential and adsorption isotherm of the AlOOH nanoparticles confirmed their modification. The most stable foam was obtained with an SDS/AlOOH concentration ratio of 5:1; further increases of the SDS concentration led to a decrease and subsequent increase in foam stability. The relationships between the zeta potential, three-phase contact angle, nanoparticle aggregate size, and foam stability were comprehensively analyzed, revealing that foam stability was affected by all of these factors. Foams Stabilized by In Situ-Modified Nanoparticles and Anionic Surfactants for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Wettability remains a prime factor that controls fluid displacement at pore-scale with substantial impact on multi-phase flow in the subsurface. As the rock surface becomes hydrophobic, any oleic phase present is tightly stored in the rock matrix and produced (hydrocarbon recovery) or cleaned up (soil-decontamination) by standard waterflooding methods. Although surface active agents such as surfactants have been used for several decades for changing the wetting states of such rocks, an aspect that has been barely premeditated is the simultaneous blends of surfactants and nanoparticles. This study thus, systematically reports the behaviour of surfactants augmented nanoparticles on wettability alteration. Contact angle, spontaneous imbibition, and mechanistic approaches were adopted to assess the technical feasibility of the newly formulated wetting agents, tested over wide-ranging conditions to ascertain efficient wetting propensities. The contact angle measurement is in good agreement with the morphological and topographical studies and spontaneous imbibition. The wetting trends for the formulated systems indicate advancing and receding water contact angle decreased with increase in nanoparticle concentration and temperature, and the spontaneous water imbibition test also showed faster water-imbibing tendencies for nanoparticle-surfactant exposed cores. Thus, the new formulated nanoparticle-surfactant systems were considered suitable for enhancing oil recovery and soil-decontamination, particularly in fractured hydrophobic reservoirs.

Synthesis and physiochemical characterization of zwitterionic surfactant for application in enhanced oil recovery

Surfactants are important ingredients of personal care products and household products. The main characteristic of these compounds is to decrease the surface tension of solvent and resulting many properties such as contact angle, foam properties etc. The coexistence of other ingredients in the product may affect the properties of surfactants. One of the main components contained in almost every personal care and household product is sodium chloride. The main aim of this work was to determine the effect of this salt on some surface and usage properties of cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB). From our experiments it was shown that the effect of added sodium chloride in the aqueous solutions of CAPB on the properties is the opposite to the one described in the literature for cationic and anionic surfactants, i.e., CMC increases with increasing ionic strength, foam height decreases with increasing salt concentration. Our investigation showed that sodium chloride makes worse the properties of the CAPB solutions examined in this work.

Effect of Sodium Chloride on the Surface and Wetting Properties of Aqueous Solutions of Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Measurements of the advancing contact angle (θ) and adsorption properties were carried out for aqueous solutions of four cationic surfactants, hexadecanol glycidyl ether ammonium chloride (C(16)PC), Guerbet alcohol hexadecyl glycidyl ether ammonium chloride (C(16)GPC), hexadecanol polyoxyethylene(3) glycidyl ether ammonium chloride(C(16)(EO)(3)PC), and Guerbet alcohol hexadecyl polyoxyethylene(3) glycidyl ether ammonium chloride (C(16)G(EO)(3)PC), on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface using the sessile drop analysis. The obtained results indicate that the contact angle decreases to a minimum with the increasing concentration for all cationic surfactants. Surfactants with branched chain show lower θ values. Moreover, an increase of adhensional tension on the PTFE-water interface has been observed for the four cationic surfactants, and the branched ones have larger increases of adhensional tension. It is very interesting that the sharp decrease of θ appears mainly after critical micelle concentration (cmc) for C(16)GPC, C(16)(EO)(3)PC, and C(16)G(EO)(3)PC, which is quite different from traditional cationic surfactants reported in the literature. Especially for C(16)G(EO)(3)PC, there are two saturated adsorption stages on PTFE surface after cmc (which means the saturated adsorption film at air-solution interface has been formed). In the first saturated stage, the C(16)G(EO)(3)PC molecules are oriented parallel to the PTFE surface with saturated monolayer formed through hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bond. In the second saturated stage, the hemimicelle has been formed on the PTFE surface, which can be supported by the QCM-D and SPR measurements.

The utility model relates to a device for measuring an interaction force between liquid drops or bubbles. On the basis of an original Wilhelmy plate method surface/interface tension gauge, a sampling device for an upper liquid drop or upper gas and a sampling device for a lower liquid drop or lower gas is introduced; the sampling device for the upper liquid drop or the upper gas mainly is a closeable system with an upper needle and a valve; the sampling device for the lower liquid drop or the lower gas is mainly provided with a lower needle; a base is arranged at the bottom of the sampling device for the lower liquid drop or the lower gas; spiral micrometers are arranged on at least two side surfaces of the base and used for adjusting the position of the lower liquid drop or a lower bubble to enable the lower liquid drop or the lower bubble to be aligned with the upper liquid drop or an upper bubble. The device for measuring the interaction force between the liquid drops or the bubbles, obtained by assembling with a micro-force balance and a lifting platform, is simple in structure, reasonable in design and phenomenally visual, and can be used for measuring the interaction force between two liquid drops or two bubbles.
