PurposeThis paper aims to determine how a strategic innovation framework that integrates the concepts of innovation function, dynamic performance management (DPM) and system-dynamics (SD) modelling can measure performance in a supply chain (SC).Design/methodology/approachThe paper provides a strategic innovation framework for an SC by considering three steps. First, a systemic intervention is presented based on the innovation functions that influence SC performance. Second, an analysis of the system's performance is proposed. Third, a model SD-based simulation is designed. The developed framework is explained by employing a case study of the Colombian pig sector SC.FindingsThe results reveal that identifying and synchronising the system's performance drivers associated with the innovation functions could improve the inventory in the SC.Practical implicationsOn the one hand, managers can use the proposed framework to evaluate the innovation investments and understand their impact on operation performance (e.g. on inventories). On the other hand, policymakers may support decision-making to improve policy design (e.g. through investment in R&D).Originality/valueFew studies discuss the impacts of innovation functions on SC performance. This paper aims to fill this theoretical gap and to contribute to the literature by suggesting a novel framework which includes innovation functions.

Traceability systems have improved significantly in the last few years in relation to safeguarding food safety and quality Although traceability is considered to be an effective tool in supporting quality control, the adoption of different traceability systems along the supply chain can bring the drawback of information asymmetry, which affects inventory management This paper explores adoption alternatives that may facilitate the blend of traceability technologies in the food industry of developing countries The analysis is based on a simulation model that represents the behaviour of inventory and food quality in the case of the mango supply chain in Colombia The results show the asymmetries between traceability systems along the supply chain as well as their effects on inventory and food quality

An Appraisal of Traceability Systems for Food Supply Chains in Colombia

The swine industry contributes to food security around the world. However, the most vulnerable point in the industry occurs at the pig production cycle. This production cycle generates an unbalance between supply and demand, which affects profitability. This paper shows a computer-based decision support system for Knowledge Management (KM) which contributes to improving the profitability performance management into the swine industry. The computer-based system allows assessing decision alternatives on the dimensions of the KM capacity and profitability performance. This tool contributes to generating integration strategies for the swine industry - four simulation scenarios was designed for representing a pig company in the Colombian case.

A Computer-Based Decision Support System for Knowledge Management in the Swine Industry

Context: Due to changes in the interest of consumers where access to information has become increasingly relevant, food supply chain traceability (CSFT) has acquired a significant importance. Method: Main issues and challenges in traceability conceptualization in the development of traceability systems and the traceability modelling of food supply chain such as management models, optimization models and simulation models have been identified in this paper, for this purpose it analyzed more than sixty (60) papers and it was shown different taxonomies about them, then it is conducted a discussion regarding to the challenges and future focuses in the modeling of traceability in food supply chain (FSC). Results: The literature review identifies limitations in the type of decisions analyzed, asymmetries of the information flow between echelons; lack of robust model, relevance of data management as an instrument of integration among the actors; gaps in the measurement of technology management policies in traceability; the need of holistic models and gaps in the relationship between traceability and sustainability. Conclusions: It is necessary technologies management which improve track and trace characteristics and contribute to the relations and flows between actors, the development of sustainable logistics management models that involve traceability, the use of multi-criteria approaches related to multiple levels and / or echelons to and finally quantify different measures of FSC performance to maximize benefits of traceability through multi-objective models.

The traceability and recovery plays a main role in the competitiveness of the food supply chain The quality control of fruit manufacturing mainly depend of the traceability technologies used In this sense, the quality control policies aimed at the traceability of products cause impact to production capacity and recovery In the closed-loop supply chain (CLSC), wastes recovery and control in manufacturing contributes to improvement of the quality, as well as sustainable production This article presents a dynamic behaviour analysis of production capacity, traceability and recovery on the peach-supply chain Consequently, the study shows a simulation model based on system dynamics (SD) methodology Results of simulation model explain why the delay in the waste recovery and traceability processes affect on the supply chain and its demand The case of study is the peach supply chain, due partly to its great market potential for food industry
