Infrared thermography (IRT) applications for building diagnostics: A review

Biocompatible conductors are important components for soft and stretchable bioelectronics for digital healthcare, which have attracted extensive research efforts. Natural biopolymers, compared to other polymers, possess unique features that make them promising building blocks for biocompatible conductors, such as good biocompatibility/biodegradability, natural abundance, sustainability, and capability, can be processed into various functional formats with tunable material properties under benign conditions. In this comprehensive review, we focus on the recent advances in biocompatible conductors based on natural biopolymers for stretchable bioelectronics. We first give a brief introduction of conductive components and natural polymers and summarize the recent development of biocompatible conductors based on representative natural biopolymers including protein (silk), polypeptide (gelatin), and polysaccharide (alginate). The design and fabrication strategies for biocompatible conductors based on these representative biopolymers are outlined, after the chemical structure and properties of such biopolymers are presented. Then we discuss the electronic component-biopolymer interface and bioelectronic-biological tissue (skin and internal tissues) interface, highlight various fabrication techniques of biocompatible conductors for soft bioelectronics, and introduce representative examples of utilizing natural biopolymer-based biocompatible conductors for on-skin bioelectronics, textile-based wearable electronics, and implantable bioelectronics for digital healthcare. Finally, we present concluding remarks on challenges and prospects for designing natural biopolymers for soft biocompatible conductors and bioelectronics.

Natural Biopolymer-Based Biocompatible Conductors for Stretchable Bioelectronics.

Recently, 3D graphene-based macrostructures (3D GBMs) have gained increased attention due to their immense application potential in water treatment. The unique structural features (e.g., large surface area and physically interconnected porous network) as well as fascinating properties (e.g., high electrical conductivity, excellent chemical/thermal stability, ultralightness, and high solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency) render 3D GBMs as promising materials for water purification through adsorption, capacitive deionization, and solar distillation. Moreover, 3D GBMs can serve as scaffolds to immobilize powder nanomaterials to build monolithic adsorbents and photo-/electrocatalysts, which significantly broadens their potential applications in water treatment. Here, recent advances in their synthesis and application toward water purification are highlighted. Remaining challenges and future perspectives are elaborated to highlight future research directions.

3D Graphene-Based Macrostructures for Water Treatment.

Chitin, a fascinating biopolymer found in living organisms, fulfills current demands of availability, sustainability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, functionality, and renewability. A feature of chitin is its ability to structure into hierarchical assemblies, spanning the nano- and macroscales, imparting toughness and resistance (chemical, biological, among others) to multicomponent materials as well as adding adaptability, tunability, and versatility. Retaining the inherent structural characteristics of chitin and its colloidal features in dispersed media has been central to its use, considering it as a building block for the construction of emerging materials. Top-down chitin designs have been reported and differentiate from the traditional molecular-level, bottom-up synthesis and assembly for material development. Such topics are the focus of this Review, which also covers the origins and biological characteristics of chitin and their influence on the morphological and physical-chemical properties. We discuss recent achievements in the isolation, deconstruction, and fractionation of chitin nanostructures of varying axial aspects (nanofibrils and nanorods) along with methods for their modification and assembly into functional materials. We highlight the role of nanochitin in its native architecture and as a component of materials subjected to multiscale interactions, leading to highly dynamic and functional structures. We introduce the most recent advances in the applications of nanochitin-derived materials and industrialization efforts, following green manufacturing principles. Finally, we offer a critical perspective about the adoption of nanochitin in the context of advanced, sustainable materials.

Preparation of Polydopamine-Modified Graphene Oxide/Chitosan Aerogel for Uranium(VI) Adsorption

A novel three-dimensional porous polydopamine-functionalized attapulgite/chitosan (AT@PDA/CS) aerogel was designed and prepared for uranium(VI) adsorption, and its morphology and structure were characterized by TEM, SEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR, Raman and XPS techniques. According to batch experiments, its adsorption equilibrium was reached within 40 min at pH 5.0. The adsorption isotherms was fitted well for Langmuir isotherm model and maximum adsorption capacity was 175.1 mg g−1 at 328 K. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Furthermore, the aerogel has superior absorption reusability and the removal efficiency was maintained at 78% after five adsorption–desorption cycles.

In this work, a low-melting-point chain extender (LMCE) was prepared using 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as raw materials. A series of co-solvent-free waterborne polyurethanes were prepared based on LMCE. The structure and properties of the waterborne polyurethanes were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, particle size analysis, and tensile tests. It was found that the molecular weights of the WPU based on LMCE were much higher than that of the WPU based on DMPA. The increase of DMPA/BDO molar ratio led to smaller particle size and better micro-phase separation of the WPU. The results of mechanical test showed that the mechanical properties of the WPU decreased with decreasing of DMPA/BDO molar ratio. In addition, the effective cross-linking chain density of the WPU was evaluated based on the theory of rubber elasticity.
