Dissonant heritage — The management of the past as a resource in conflict

The sport for development and peace (SDP) sector is made up of various development-focused policies and programs that seek to engage, stabilise, empower and create social and economic change. SDP projects, most often run by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), have been implemented in regions enduring physical conflicts, health pandemics, major gender divisions and other social crises that have a great impact on youth. In this context, sport has been accorded the difficult task of facilitating greater access for marginal, vulnerable or community groups whilst positively contributing to the attainment of diverse development objectives. While the ‘where’ and ‘why’ of SDP has been largely accounted for, the attention in this article is on the ‘who’ of SDP in relation to the notion of inclusion. Drawing on extensive research conducted in Jamaica, Kosovo, Rwanda and Sri Lanka, the idea of SDP as an inclusionary practice is critically investigated. While SDP may ‘give voice’ to participants, especially to individuals with athletic ability or sporting interests, the extent to which this creates social contexts that are fundamentally inclusive remains open to discussion. In this sense, while targeting populations, groups or individuals remains an attractive strategy to achieve specific goals, for example youth empowerment or gender equality, empirical assessments complicate the presumption that SDP programming leads to inclusion, particularly at a larger societal level. The article considers a matrix of inclusion criteria, potential outcomes, and the tensions arising between targeted SDP programming and the often-exclusionary dimensions of sport more broadly, with a focus on youth and gender issues.

The Inclusion Conundrum: A Critical Account of Youth and Gender Issues Within and Beyond Sport for Development and Peace Interventions

This study examines the lived experiences of oppression and opportunities encountered by Tibetan Buddhist nuns. The theoretical approach of the research is intersectionality, which aims at describing and analyzing the interconnection of different oppressive status positions and institutions and giving voice to marginalized groups. My study investigates how the intersections of the nuns’ female gender, their Buddhist religion and their Tibetan nationality on the one hand produce subordination and an unequal distribution of power and, on the other hand, provide the nuns with opportunities and agency. The study is based on research material collected during three field research trips to the traditionally Tibetan regions of Amdo and Kham in the People’s Republic of China, and one trip to a Tibetan exile community in Himachal Pradesh in India. The data was collected through multi-sited ethnography over a spatially detached field. The primary material comprises the life story interviews of 38 nuns. In addition, 49 focused and semi-structured interviews with lay Tibetans and some monks and nuns were conducted and thematically analyzed in order to gain more information about the significance of Tibetan monasticism in the present-day Tibetan society. The analysis shows that power structures and relations that disadvantage nuns as women, as religious practitioners, and as Tibetans are constructed and maintained in different domains of power. In the structural domain, traditional but still dominant institutions – such as the distribution of work, marriage and educational practices, as well as religious institutions – disadvantage Tibetan nuns. In the disciplinary domain of power, the nuns find themselves monitored by traditional culture and the Chinese authorities. The unequal distribution of power in these domains is justified by hegemonic ideas based on religious and cultural beliefs, ideas of religion and modernity, and religion and gender. These domains of power find their expression in the everyday life of people in the interpersonal sphere. Moreover, the analysis also reveals that many of the nuns were highly active in choosing and determining their life course. It can be suggested that monastic life offers Tibetan women freedom from the suffering faced by laywomen. The juncture of their gender, religion and nationality also provides them with agency that can be understood as resistance. This becomes most evident in their nationalism, which is both visible and more subtle. Finally, monastic life offers them religious agency as compassionate bodhisattvas, who aim to not only benefit other living beings but also themselves. The research shows that depending on the intersection of her status positions, the Tibetan nun can be either disadvantaged or privileged, or in some cases, both at the same time. Note on non-English terms This research contains Tibetan, Sanskrit and some Chinese terms. I have applied the Wylie transliteration scheme to transliterate some Tibetan names and especially the Buddhist concepts I use. Wylie transliteration has become a standard transliteration system in Tibetan studies. It does not give the correct pronunciation of a Tibetan word, but is used to transcribe Tibetan script as it is written. For Buddhist terms and some central figures of Buddhism, Sanskrit is also used. For Chinese terms, pinyin romanization is used.

Tibetan Nuns between Oppression and Opportunities : An Intersectional Study

There is a common assumption that information communication technology (ICT) enables 
employees to work together and to be virtually co-present, regardless of time and place. 
However, previous studies of social networking sites (e.g. Facebook and social enterprise 
media in work settings) show a consistent tendency among users to reconnect and commu
-
nicate online almost exclusively with people they already know. The paper at hand examines 
in depth what role shared places have in knowledge work and in creating a virtual or online 
co-presence among knowledge professionals. The findings of the present study show that the 
tendency of communicating with known others in online spaces is also at play in the offline 
workplace, as professionals approach those whom they already know when in need of work-
related help. One of the conclusions is that the geographical workplace plays a key role in 
creating a common ground for communication and social integration among employees, since 
a core dimension in knowledge work is social interaction. The paper uses insights from a 
qualitative and longitudinal case study (2010–2013) of a multinational consultancy company.

The exploration of the complicated cultural and social landscapes of post-Cold War military bases in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), offered by this special issue of Folklore: Electronic Journal of Folklore, has its starting point in Borne Sulinowo in the north-western part of Poland. In the 1930s, this one-time German fishing and farming village became a military training area of the Third Reich and later, during World War II, a transitory camp and then a prison camp for officers. Following the takeover by the Red Army in 1945, the whole area was turned into a “closed city”: a secret military settlement that constituted one node in the intricate web of military objects woven by the Soviet Union across the CEE during the Cold War years. Borne Sulinowo, the Polish civilian town, has been in the making since the departure of the military forces of the Russian Federation from Poland in 1993 (Demski & Czarnecka 2015; Czarnecka 2015). Characterised by layers of military presence inscribed on the built environment and instilled in local lore, Borne Sulinowo captures many of the conundrums facing former Soviet/Russian1 military bases and their civilian neighbours or inhabitants. Values, Substantiality, and Passage of Time: Representations and Reinterpretations of Military Heritage

\nThe focus of this article is on the ethnic shows organized in Poznań, a middle-sized European city that was part of the network of German Völkerschauen between 1879 and 1914. The author places the ethnic shows in the context of modern urban experience, where the establishment of zoological garden space enabled direct interactions between actors, animals, and the audience, thus creating a distinct sensory world, a kind of enclave within an urban landscape. Based on the local press coverage, the article tracks the changes over time in how the shows evolved in form, theme, and message when covering the expanding numbers of touring groups that provided live lessons of exotic people as entertainment. A close reading of varying accounts of the Polish- and German-language press indicates that some of the described episodes were perceived differently. The article presents ethnic shows from the vantage of the rapidly transforming city at the turn of the 20th century in accordance with the economic and cultural trends operating there.
