Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed from organic linkers and inorganic building blocks, are well-known for their high crystallinity, high surface areas, and high component tunability. The stability of MOFs is a key prerequisite for their potential practical applications in areas including storage, separation, catalysis, and biomedicine since it is essential to guarantee the framework integrity during utilization. However, MOFs are prone to destruction under external stimuli, considerably hampering their commercialization. In this Review, we provide an overview of the situations where MOFs undergo destruction due to external stimuli such as chemical, thermal, photolytic, radiolytic, electronic, and mechanical factors and offer guidelines to avoid unwanted degradation happened to the framework. Furthermore, we discuss possible destruction mechanisms and their varying derived products. In particular, we highlight cases that utilize MOF instability to fabricate varying materials including hierarchically porous MOFs, monolayer MOF nanosheets, amorphous MOF liquids and glasses, polymers, metal nanoparticles, metal carbide nanoparticles, and carbon materials. Finally, we provide a perspective on the utilization of MOF destruction to develop advanced materials with a superior hierarchy for various applications.

Destruction of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Positive and Negative Aspects of Stability and Lability.

Ni-based metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs) with unique hierarchical hollow ball-in-ball nanostructure were synthesized by solvothermal reactions. After successive carbonization and oxidation treatments, hierarchical NiO/Ni nanocrystals covered with a graphene shell were obtained with the hollow ball-in-ball nanostructure intact. The resulting materials exhibited superior performance as the anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs): they provide high reversible specific capacity (1144 mAh/g), excellent cyclability (nearly no capacity loss after 1000 cycles) and rate performance (805 mAh/g at 15 A/g). In addition, the hierarchical NiO/Ni/Graphene composites demonstrated promising performance as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Such a superior lithium and sodium storage performance is derived from the well-designed hierarchical hollow ball-in-ball structure of NiO/Ni/Graphene composites, which not only mitigates the volume expansion of NiO during the cycles but also provides a continuous highly conductive graphene matrix to facilitate the fast charge transfer and form a stable SEI layer.

Metal Organic Frameworks Derived Hierarchical Hollow NiO/Ni/Graphene Composites for Lithium and Sodium Storage

Propylene/propane separation is one of the most challenging separations, currently achieved by energy-intensive cryogenic distillation. Despite the great potential for energy-efficient membrane-based separations, no commercial membranes are currently available due to the limitations of current polymeric materials. Zeolitic imidazolate framework, ZIF-8, with the effective aperture size of ∼4.0 Å, has been shown to be very promising for propylene/propane separation. Despite the extensive research on ZIF-8 membranes, only a few reported ZIF-8 membranes have displayed good propylene/propane separation performances presumably due to the challenges of controlling the microstructures of polycrystalline membranes. Here we report the first well-intergrown membranes of ZIF-67 (Co-substituted ZIF-8) by heteroepitaxially growing ZIF-67 on ZIF-8 seed layers. The ZIF-67 membranes exhibited impressively high propylene/propane separation capabilities. Furthermore, when a tertiary growth of ZIF-8 layers was applied to heteroepitaxially grown ZIF-67 membranes, the membranes exhibited unprecedentedly high propylene/propane separation factors of ∼200 possibly due to enhanced grain boundary structure.

Synthesis of Ultrathin MnO2 Nanowire-Intercalated 2D-MXenes for High-Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

The thermolysis routes of two isostructural metal–organic framework compounds (Zn-based ZIF-8 and Co-based ZIF-67) are investigated based on temperature-dependent and time-dependent in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and in situ X-ray diffraction data, as well as thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These data highlight thermolysis effects on different vibrations and dissociations within specific atomic moieties. The coordination differences between Zn–N and Co–N lead to the distinct thermolysis routes of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. ZIF-8 is easily deformed during heating while decomposes at a higher temperature due to the saturated Zn–N coordination. ZIF-67, however, does not deform during heating due to the stronger Co–N bonds, but easily reacts with oxygen due to the unsaturated Co–N bonds. Our results demonstrate that in situ FTIR paired with in situ XRD is a powerful technique for MOF thermolysis investigation, and we suggest that the thermolysis mechanisms of MOFs may be unveiled by investigating a series of MOFs having different coordination types using in situ characterisation methods.

Unveiling the thermolysis natures of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 by employing in situ structural characterization studies

Constructing heterojunction is a promising way to improve the charge transfer efficiency and can thus promote the electrochemical properties. Herein, a facile and effective epitaxial-like growth strategy is applied to NiSe2 nano-octahedra to fabricate the NiSe2-(100)/Ni(OH)2-(110) heterojunction. The heterojunction composite and Ni(OH)2 (performing high electrochemical activity) is ideal high-rate battery-type supercapacitor electrode. The NiSe2/Ni(OH)2 electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 909 C g−1 at 1 A g−1 and 597 C g−1 at 20 A g−1. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor composed of the NiSe2/Ni(OH)2 cathode and p-phenylenediamine-functional reduced graphene oxide anode achieves an ultrahigh specific capacity of 303 C g−1 at 1 A g−1 and a superior energy density of 76.1 Wh kg−1 at 906 W kg−1, as well as an outstanding cycling stability of 82% retention for 8000 cycles at 10 A g−1. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of NiSe2/Ni(OH)2 heterojunction exhibiting such remarkable supercapacitor performance. This work not only provides a promising candidate for next-generation energy storage device but also offers a possible universal strategy to fabricate metal selenides/metal hydroxides heterojunctions.
